Is there any reference/notes on the format in which backend/frontend information
must be specified for block devices in xenstore? I am looking at the existing
code but figured it would be much easier to work with if I understand in general
what the expectation is before further modifying the code in that area.

Nothing apart from the code, I am afraid.
I would try to avoid making any changes to the way xenstore entries are
setup for disk frontends/backends as much as possible.
