Hello.
LVM doesn't work on my new kernel. The previous kernel was bare.i from
Slackware 9.1 CD (2.4.22), without devfs support. I built the kernel with:
/dev filesystem support Y
--------Automatically mount at boot	N
--------/dev/pts file system for...	N
Multi-device support (RAID and LVM)	Y
--------Multiple devices driver support Y
--------RAID support N (I don' t need RAID)
--------Logical volume manager	Y

I have folder /dev/vg00 (my volume group) with files group, home, opt, tmp,
usr, var.
I also have /proc/lvm directory, that contains an empty folder VGs and file
global. Executing
cat global
displays
LVM driver	LVM version 1.0.5+(22/07/2002)
Total: 0 VGs, 0 PVs, 0 LVs (0 LVs open)
Global: 144 bytes malloced
IOP version: 10 0:22:07 active.

Logical volumes are not mounted.
With previous kernel they are.

The problem doesn't exist any more. LVM started working after next reboot.
Thank you.

I sent this once, but got some strange message back that suggested it
wasn't posted. Apols if it was and you have got this twice!

I did a silly thing: I accepted the default and included a usb-connected
drive in my logical volume group when I installed Fedora recently. I
didn't discover this until I had finished installing everything and got it
set up exactly as I want.

I can't seem to find a way to remove the drive from the volume group, etc.
unless there are sufficient unallocated extents on other drives. There is
only one other drive in the system and it is fully allocated. There is so
much unused space on the drive that it could easily accommodate the usb
drive contents.

Are the only ways to resolve this either to reinstall from scratch or add
a second internal drive?

Thanks

Nick

HI all,

I'm testing LVM on a redhat EL 5 with the following configuration :
  * one FSC Primergy server with one dual port Qlogic HBA 2462
  * each Qlogic port is connected to a SAN (dual fabric)
  * use of device mapper
  * use of LVM to define a mirror disk on two IBM ESS 2105 disks

Everything was fine and worked. I have created the lvm with :

root@linprd11 by-id]# lvcreate -L 10G -m1 -n mirror1vg1
vg1 /dev/mapper/1IBM_2105_41630194 /dev/mapper/1IBM_2105_41630317
/dev/mapper/1IBM_2105_41F30194
 Logical volume "mirror1vg1" created

Sync between the two mirrors was ok :

[root@linprd11 by-id]# lvs
LV VG Attr LSize Origin Snap% Move Log Copy%
 mirror1vg1 vg1 mwi-a- 10.00G mirror1vg1_mlog 100.00

Then, I suppress access to one image of the mirror and reboot the Linux
server. The boot failed and give the following error message :
    * An error occurred during the file system check. Dropping you to a
shell - Give root password for maintenance :

When I try the command lvm -a -o +devices -P , I receive Locking type 1
initialisation failed. If I use the --ignorelockingfailure, I receive :

Can you tell me how I can solve this problem ?

Thanks a lot for your help.
Regards.
Pierre.

Hi list,

I have a motherboard Intel multicore i686 on fc6Xen. I would want to mount a
SCSI HDD identical to mine. fdisk -l message:

[root@localhost ~]# fdisk -l

What I must write in order to mount the partition sdb2 in /etc/fstab? This is
the mine /etc/fstab whit the line that I have added, but doesn't work.

Hi

Im doing a snapshot (hardware-based in EVA5000) of a LV (lvm2) and i
wonder what is the correct way to use this snapshot? Problem is that
this snapshot has the same ID as the original one. In HP-UX a would do a
vgchgid on this snapshot-LV. Any help would be aprreciated.

Regards Fredrik

Hi

I try to create a regular LV striped over two PV:s but if i read the
output from lvdisplay right i only get a linear distribution. Shouldn't
the 1st LE be on PV#1, 2nd on PV#2 and so on?

Yep - persistant mirrors require a log lv as well as the two mirror lvs, so
with the default allocation right now it will fail if you don't have three
disks. The log LV keeps track of which regions are dirty and which are clean
for resyncing purposes.

I'm testing the experimental mirroring support and this doesn't add upp
for me?

 pvs
PV VG Fmt Attr PSize PFree
  /dev/sdb test_vg lvm2 a- 1020.00M 1020.00M
  /dev/sdc test_vg lvm2 a- 1020.00M 1020.00M

 vgs
  VG #PV #LV #SN Attr VSize VFree
  test_vg 2 0 0 wz--n 1.99G 1.99G

lvcreate -m1 -L 100M -v -ntest test_vg
    Finding volume group "test_vg"
Archiving volume group "test_vg" metadata (seqno 8).
    Creating logical volume test_mlog
Not enough PVs with free space available for parallel allocation.
  Consider --alloc anywhere if desperate.

However, if I add another PV into my volume group, the lvcreate above
succeeds.

create a degraded raid1 array with only the other disk

add the new md to the existing vg

pvmove all lv on the new pv

remove the old (now empty pv)

use dd to make it forget it was a pv

hotadd this disk to the array

Hi,

Is there a safe way to convert from a working LVM (with root on LVM) to
a software RAID1 including the device where is the existing LVM ?

Hello,
This morning I had an oops which I think is due to extending a
LVM1 LVsnapshot.

I'm running a custom compiled 2.4.26 kernel. Debian source + LVM1.0.8 +
VFS-Lock from dm tarball.

If anyone can give me any pointers to informantion of debuging such
problems that would be great!

Thanks in advance for any advice on debugging.

Here is the syslog output:

Your caps-lock and return keys are broken.

Furthermore, have you *ever* bothered looking up the headers of any mail
off this list? There's a Mailman based web-frontend where you can
request your password being sent to your address. Request your password
there, not from list admin. Then unsubscribe.

You made it onto this list on your own, you unsubscribe on your own. And
fix your keyboard, please. Oh, and next time, set an appropriate subject
line, too.

Ahhhh..... that is the difference after the upgrade. I have added filters
and will probably run devfs later on.

Works much better now. Thanks.

I have a summary of intial results from our DBT-2 workload with
PostgreSQL 7.4.1 on a 4-way Itanium2 system with 16GB of memory and 56
drives using LVM2 and linux-2.6.3. There's readprofile
and oprofile data, but oprofile is seg faulting when it's trying to
generate the annotated assembly source.

I'm still trying to get a feel for how large of a database I can run
with it, but I wanted to share what I've got so far. It looks like I
have quite a bit of unused system resources, so I probably have to tune
the database and perhaps how I'm driving the load a bit.

Let me know if there are any questions.

Hallo,

ich habe mir vermutlich eine meiner Volume Groups zerschossen und hoffe nun,

Hi!

I am running LVM2 on 2.6.0-test8 with 4 x 250GB IDE HDD.

The VG is setup based on 16G PE size, and LV using 4 stripes/4K chunk size, mounted with XFS and exported using NFS.

I am trying to test the system using a looping program that performs continuous write to the storage from a remote client.

The system so far has not been able to cross the 284GB mark, using striped or non-stripe LV. Any clue which sub-system is causing the problem?

Regards!
VT

Howard,

what's the LV layout (linear/striped ?).
How do you write to the LV (dd or soemthing).
What's the write pattern (sequential ? block size ?)

80MB/sec raw sounds like you use a striped LV.

I built a 7 disk vg and put 1 lv on it. I do not want to mount a file
system.
I just want to write directly to the disk device, /dev/vg1/vol1.

My write performance has an odd behavior.
If after booting I write to the volume I get roughly 175MB/sec.
If after booting I do a mke2fs on the volume, mount it, umount it, then
write to the volume I get roughly 230 MB/sec.

Any ideas? How can I get top speed without first mounting then
umounting the volume?
By the way, I tried binding a raw device to the lv and got very bad
performance; around 80 MB/sec. Would that be expected?

(I'm using redhat 9.0 -> lvm-1.0.3-12)

Thanks...

Based on what I found when looking at LVM and ataraid issues:

The function lvm_get_device_type() in tools/lib/lvm_check_partitioned_dev.c
(LVM 1.0.7) is used to check that a device being considered for a LVM
physical volume is of an appropriate type.

It does this by comparing the device's number (ie, major/minor) against
the list in /proc/devices, and ensuring that the driver associated with
the major number is one of the ones in its list.

It has the following device names in its list:

-=- cut here -=-
        { "ide", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_IDE }, /* IDE disk */
        { "sd", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_SD }, /* SCSI disk */
        { "md", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_MD }, /* Multiple Disk driver (SoftRAID) */
        { "loop", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_LOOP }, /* Loop device */
        { "dasd", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_DASD }, /* DASD disk (IBM S/390, zSeries) */
        { "rd", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_DAC960 }, /* DAC960 (2.2 kernel name) */
        { "dac960", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_DAC960 },/* DAC960 (2.4 kernel name) */
        { "nbd", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_NBD }, /* Network Block Device */
        { "ida", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_COMPAQ_SMART2 },/* Compaq SMART2 */
        { "cciss", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_COMPAQ_CISS },/* Compaq CISS array */
        { "ubd", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_UBD }, /* User-mode virtual block device */
        { "ataraid", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_ATARAID }, /* ATA Raid */
        { "i2o_block", LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_I2O }, /* i2o disk */
        { NULL, LVM_DEVICE_TYPE_INVALID } /* Device not recognized */
-=- cut here -=-

If the device you're trying to use doesn't match one of those types,
then LVM will refuse to use it, viz:

>linuxsvm:/usr/src/linux # lvmdiskscan -vd
>lvmdiskscan -- reading all disks / partitions (this may take a while...)
>lvmdiskscan -- filling directory cache...
><1> lvm_dir_cache -- CALLED MICHU

><22> lvm_add_dir_cache -- CALLED with /dev/svmac=20
><22> lvm_add_dir_cache -- LEAVING with ret: NOT ADDED

The "NOT ADDED" there means "didn't recognise /dev/svmac as a type of
device that can have LVM on it".

So at very least you'd need to change that table. You'll also need to
add to the enumerated type (lvm_device_type_t) in liblvm.h, so that
you have a value to put on the right hand side of that table in
tools/lib/lvm_check_partitioned_dev.c.

And there may well be some other areas that you need to add to as well.

Since LVM 2 apparently supports control with regular expressions that
might be a better choice than trying to hack support into LVM 1.0.7.
(although LVM 2 isn't officially released yet AFAIK).

hey everyone

well ewen, what do you mean with types recognised from matching against /proc/devices? it contains the following:

linuxsvm:~ # cat /proc/devices
Character devices:
  1 mem
  2 pty
  3 ttyp
  4 ttyS
  5 cua
  7 vcs
 10 misc

251 vsd
252 vsd
253 vsd
254 vsd

ahh and im using lvm1.07. well so no solution for my problem? or is there another way to use lvm with my special devices? i woulnd like to hack the lvm code... a lvmdiskscan looks like this:

linuxsvm:/usr/src/linux # lvmdiskscan -vd
lvmdiskscan -- reading all disks / partitions (this may take a while...)
lvmdiskscan -- filling directory cache...
<1> lvm_dir_cache -- CALLED MICHU
<22> lvm_add_dir_cache -- CALLED with /dev/svmaa

<22> lvm_add_dir_cache -- CALLED with /dev/svmac
<22> lvm_add_dir_cache -- LEAVING with ret: NOT ADDED

it seems like he "sees" my device but simply dont add it.... what im doing wrong?

Having been down this road today (investigating the ataraid
issues I've posted about), you'll probably also need to look at
tools/lib/lvm_check_dev.c and tools/lib/lvm_check_partitioned_dev.c
and liblvm.h (and perhaps some others). In particular with LVM 1 (eg,
1.0.7) there is an enumerated type, lvm_device_type_t used to identify
applicable devices, and a function lvm_get_device_type() which is used as
a filter on the lvm_dir_cache() results, based on that enumerated list,
and another table, when scanning for physical volumes.

I suspect your virtualisation layer isn't one of the types recognised
from matching against /proc/devices, and so it's being ignored.

In the case of ataraid it appears that (in addition to not having the
same hacks as for md to prevent aliasing, and hence the
accessing-raw-devices issues I've mentioned) LVM considers ataraid to be
unpartitioned (a la, md, loopback, etc). In fact this isn't the case,
ataraid is a whole-disk device, with partitions (/dev/ataraid/dNpM where
N is the raid array, and M is the partition number).

BTW, I'm not sure if you're trying to use LVM 1 or LVM 2. I've been
told that LVM 2 has a more configurable system for scanning for physical
volumes which might avoid some of the ataraid issues I found; and might
perhaps allow you to get it to see your san virtualisation devices
without hacking on the code.

For now, I've put aside the idea of using LVM on ataraid. When LVM 2
is released, and I've got some more time, I might give that a go instead.

Mala,

LVM1 not out of the box because of device name filtering constraints.
LVM2 is able to support those.

LVM1 won't, LVM2 will.

You can, but vgcreate will fail (in LVM1).

Hi,

Would lvm recognize pseudo devices files corresponding to the actual devices.

For example:
pseudo1 ---> /dev/sda

Can I do a pvcreate on pseudo1 ??

Thanks and Regards,
Mala

Correct.

If your question aims to answer the creation/modification issue:

- if the file doesn't exist in the original it was created *after* the
  snapshot was taken :)

- if it exists in both, you can compare the content

Please tell me, if you still need more information about the snapshot mappings.

linux-lvm@sistina.com <linux-lvm@sistina.com>

hello,
according to my knowledge snapshot's each pe holds
first COW table structures and then data. what i want
to now is how to know that this chunk of data on pe
belongs to which data block on the original filesystem
and wether the file to which the data block belongs
was created after the snapshot was taken.

Is there any other metadata stored on snapshot PE
other than cow table entries.

thanx ruchika

"pvdisplay -v" and "lvdisplay -v" ist what you want either showing the
mapping of the physical extents to the logical volumes or vice versa.

Just by running the LVM tools.

LVM1 stores work copies of the VGDA (i.e. the metadata) in /etc/lvmtab and
/etc/lvmtab.d/. Is that file and the directory write accessable and is
there enough space (couple of MB is sufficient)?

Hello Heinz,

I'm having a problem with running lvm on SuSE Linux 7.2 (2.4 kernel) on a s/390 with VM platform. I VM format my dasd devices, do linux dasdfmt's and fdasd's and everything looks fine. The pvcreate looks great as does the vgcreate. I then try to lvcreate through yast and get the following error. Return code of the output was 98, lvcreate -- error: VGDA in kernel and lvmtab are not consistent: please run vgscan. I run vgscan and get the same thing. I think I did everything correctly. Just change the LVM option in the kernel to build as a module. No
need to change source.

It's already gone. I see no reason to generate profiling code on users machines.

I can confirm that this is true on my box.

I removed -pg from make.tmpl.in some time ago (probably in response to a
similar bug report!) but not early enough to reach 1.0.1.

Patrick,

could you proove what Chris pointed out in this thread:

<begin chris input>
All of the lvm10 utilities segfault on sparc. The root cause of the
problem is that the shared library is compiled with both -fPIC and -pg. On
sparc, this results in gcc outputting:

cc1: warning: -fPIC and profiling conflict: disabling -fPIC

This can be seen in the buildd logs:
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=lvm10&ver=1.0.1release-1&arch=sparc&stamp=1007871077&file=log&as=raw

Removing the -pg from the CFLAGS definition on line 73 of make.tmpl fixed
the problem -- all LVM utilities worked fine.
<end chris input>

Thanks,
Heinz

Hmmm, it's not getting very far. In fact it's not even getting into pvcreate at
all - that strace output is just getting the shared libraries mapped in and
starting libc.

I'm actually impressed you got that far - I've never managed to get Linux 2.4 to
run successfully on a 32bit SPARC machine.

The strace output doesn't help to analyze this, because it directly
segfaults after getting the PID.

Please send me the output of "pvcreate -d /dev/sdb1" directly (mge@sistina.com)

Thanks Patric,

I actually just decided to not use Alan Cox's patch and just reverted back
to a vanilla Linus kernel. I'll wait for the dust to settle before
worrying about it. Only reason this was a question was because I added
more memory to this server and needed HIGHMEM support in order to address
it (thank god for cheap memory!) so I wanted to upgrade the kernel in the
process.

Thanks for the information.

Regards,

Tren.

Hello

My system crashes for some days and so my LVM-raid. the harddisks are all ok. I have installed Linux(Slackware 7.1) new. and compiled the kernel(2.2.18) in the same way the old was, with LVM 0.9. all settings are the same. the compilation was done successfully and at boot time stands "lvm -- Driver successfully initialized". Then I have compiled the LVM-tools and this was successfully too. after all ive tried to reactivate the old-lvm-partition and typed a "vgscan" and the program found the old one and this was inactive. so i ve typed "vgchange -ay" and there stands "vgchange -- LVM driver/module not loaded?". but the driver is loaded, according to the bootmsg. i ve recompiled the kernel and the tools and i ve tried the last version 1.0.1-rc2 and there was everytime the same problem that the driver couldn't be found. LVM as modul in the kernel was not successfully too. After all i ve tried the 2.4.9 kernel but with no success.
Now i don't know what i can do to get the files from the raid, or to reactivate the raid. can someone other help ?

thx for help anyway !
Jan

I'm just about finished setting up an LVM/ReiserFS system but I have a few
(more) questions...

1. In reading the documentation, I see mention of something called a
snapshot. Could someone explain briefly what that means?

2. I also see mention of a quantity called stripesize. Does this allow me
to create a LV which stripes across all of the PV's? If so, what happens
if I later add more PV's to to the VG?

Hi all,

in order to keep everybody tuned:

Alan Cox is kindly checking the Linux LVM patch bits now.

We hope to get a status from him this week and will forward them
to Linus afer any necessary cleanups ASAP.

It may be possible to use parted to do this. I don't think it is 100%
finished, but I _think_ it can do "move start of filesystem" kind of
work. It will NOT do the LVM creation, and you will need to manually
figure out how much space to put at the beggining of the PV for LVM
metadata. After that, you will also need to create an LV which is
using exactly the correct PEs to hold the filesystem.

I would make a backup first.

Cheers, Andreas

That was my orginal options too. I was hoping some had
an "in place" way of doing it.

Thanks

if you aren't re-using the same acerage, just create the
new LVM and cpio -p the data from old to new. if you want
to re-use the disk space then you'll have to back it up,
make the LVM's and restore the contents.

OK, lemme get this straight. (Sorry if I'm being dense here.) I started=
 with
the lvm kernel module code that comes with the 2.4.0-test10 sources. I
patched it with the two 0_9 patches per the INSTALL instructions, and com=
piled
it into my kernel. Then I installed the 0.9 tools RPM from sistina.com. =
 That
is what is segfaulting when I try to do a vgextend. Not a fatal problem,=

since I don't absolutely need the extra space in my volume group. But do=
es
anyone know of a patch to fix this? Is this likely to be fixed in the fi=
nal
2.4? =
