We're back up to about a 3:1 ratio of spam to content on the wiki.

Constantly weeding it out is a poor use of our time... where are we at with this, have we required an account to create pages, at least?

I suspect Russell isn't reading the xfs list to actively any more.

Russell, any chance to disabllow posting for users that don't have an
account on the wiki?

ya I just have time to skim it these days.

Well unfortunately I seem to remember doing that a while back. (I'll
check to make sure). I did notice that there are accounts showing up to
just post spam :-(. I have been going in once in a while and looking at
the recent changes page and deleting new pages/changes that are spam.

Maybe I can change it to approved only accounts can make changes.
I'll look into it.

I suppose like anything else nothing is perfect at keeping the spam away.

Ok I updated mediawiki to 1.19 so that the ConfirmUser extension wold work.

All accounts must be approved by a sysop before they are active.
Hopefully I can just reject the obvious spam accounts.

There was some 1500 accounts on the system most of them with no edit's
so I just deleted those.

There is a bunch of spam accounts with 1 or 2 posts these should be deleted
with the mergeuser extension but that is a bit more time consuming.

Please let me know if the upgrade has caused any problems.

I've now had another session on the wiki (git.wiki.kernel.org) where
I've deleted spam that's piling up. It seems as the policy is to place
deleted pages into [[Category:Deleted]], and that's what I've done.
Can someone with the necessary muscles visit that category and delete
the pages that's in that category? It will be much easier to find new
spam pages when they're deleted. At the moment ther̈́e's 179 pages in
that category, so a little cleanup would be nice.

Also, there are lots of spambots registering spam users there, this
pollutes the user database and Special:RecentChanges . Would it be
possible to set up a CAPTCHA when trying to register an account? This
has been of great help at the wikis I'm helping out with. Before the
CAPTCHA, serveral hundred new spam users every day, after the CAPTCHA
was installed, not a single one.

Øyvind (User:Sunny256)

Perfectly reasonable. Quite frankly I was surprised long ago when I
learned it was totally open, given the small size of the XFS community,
and the opportunity for mischief, or just factual errors, ala many
Wikipedia articles.

Sounds fine to me, I went through about a month ago and deleted a
bunch of spam myself. Even just requiring a confirmation email (i.e.
wiki sends an email with a confirm link) would be sufficient to
prevent most spam, I think....

Cheers,

Dave.

That sounds reasonable to me - the list's presumably not huge so there shouldn't be an enormous amount of work involved.

I just had to delete dozends of link farm spam entries on the xfs.org.

This is getting a bit out of control, so I'm wondring what we can do
about it.

I wonder if it's reasonable only to hand out account if a user manually
contacts one of the admins. I don't want the bar high, just proving
to be able to writing a human person mail basically.

SpamBlacklist is up and running now.

But currently <http://wiki.openembedded.org/index.php/MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist> is used.

Let's try this first. We can come back to your suggestion if it does not work well enough.

Steffen

PS@melo-admins: What about the policy to track all config changes with git? A 'git status' in /etc shows a lot of 'Changed but not updated'. :(

ConfirmEdits default math question is looking too simple. reCAPTCHA
might be better? Recent anti reCHAPCHA tools having rates about 17%. It
is also solvable for blind people. The only drawback, it helps google to
steal books...

What about a SpamBlacklist [1] with a regex to everything and a
SpamWhitelist for OpenEmbedded related links? This will not need any
captchas and do not help google. For adding a new item to the whitelist
a request to the mailing list is necessary.

Best regards

I fully agree!

but if there are alternatives that are as effective as the captcha,
I'm in favour of those. I find the current captchas hard to read and
it does not really help that it are obscure words that I (as a
non-native speaker) do not know.

I can try to add the ConfirmEdit[1] mediawiki extension for this purpose.

Would a captcha be accepted for user registration by the community? Captchas for the edits itself i consider to be overkill.

It looks like someone is spamming our wiki with new users :-(

Any ideas where to go from here?

Thanks,

My browser warns me that the "reserve website" linked from the
modified pages (if that's the spam?) contains malware.

Thanks for finding that, I'm getting the pages deleted.

Hello,

I've spotted some new pages (probably encrypted) in the wiki:
http://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Special:RecentChanges

I deleted it's contents but someone might delete the pages at all and c=
heck=20
the user registration logs to block them.

thanks,

Recent moinmoin versions have a spam filter, is this one allready used
in the xen wiki?

That's really annoying -- thanks for tidying up.

It would be good to hear suggestions as to how best to avoid this in
future. I'd prefer not to have to remember yet another web login, but
maybe we'll have to do this (I suspect sharing accounts with bugzilla is
probably tricky).

The wiki had an annoying case of spam; I fixed some of it. Can we
please make only registered users change pages to avoid it in the
future? (are there other viable solutions to wiki spam?)

Cheers,
Muli
