Which has:

CONFIG_SCHED_MC=y
# CONFIG_IRQ_TIME_ACCOUNTING is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY is not set
CONFIG_PREEMPT=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT=y
CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y

...which means that this config file isn't even from
a preempt-rt build. If it was it would have something
like the below.

CONFIG_SCHED_MC=y
# CONFIG_IRQ_TIME_ACCOUNTING is not set
CONFIG_PREEMPT=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_BASE=y
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT__LL is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_RTB is not set
CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT=y
CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y

Paul.

Not really the same.

When I diff the 2 files, I get about 6,000 lines of diff.

There are oodles and oodles of differences all over the place.
Entire subsystems are not enabled in the RT version.

Put the working (non-rt) config file into the fully patched RT tree.

Then run make oldconfig, and you should only get a few prompts pertaining to RT and debug options.

Answer those appropriately and then you should end up with a config matching the original config (but not the same)

Sven

..config matching the original config..

Yes, that is what it is.

I did some small edits, but not really any difference to how the kernel
works. Such as a 90hz timer. Which seemed to work the best here, for
lowest jitter in OpenGL. I have actually had a lot of fun with the kernel,
and games are indeed much more immersive with low-jitter. It just creates
a higher expectation to quality, and for some games also make some
paradigms a bit outdated. Such as some horrorscenes in doom 3. Doom 3
plays extremely well here now though. Also improving the action on the
fastest bus (PCIe), seem to generally improve the whole system.
Videojitter is lower, although ofcourse it needs to be completely fixed
with sync and refresh rate changes. System is more responsive. So I
believe that reducing jitter, seems central to a good computing experience.

Will be fun to try rt patch also, although current mainline is very close
to doing 0.2ms latency, there is just a few clicks at 0.3 (without
realtime threads) here. Meaning that os-jitter on average is lower than
0.2ms. Having used an amiga500, and knowing how that feels. 0.3ms feels
close, but maybe just a bit lower. So 0.2ms. And that is the kind of
computer I want.

I am also building a machine particulary for low-jitter.
http://paradoxuncreated.com/Blog/wordpress/?p=4176

So if we can`t get RT running on this one, and it seems many are getting
it to work, atleast maybe it will work on the new. And if mainline does
maxjitter/latency below 0.2ms on the new machine, which will be very
specifically tuned for low latency hardware-wise, I ofcourse don`t need
rt, unless there should be an argument of better performance still, which
most seem to think there isn`t.

So anyway down to 0.2ms is where I care. I think. Great job on doing RT
though, but unfortunately it hasn`t worked here. Actually I could try a
live RT distro, on my mac mini also. :)

Peace Be With You.

Hiya, I am switching email-client currently, so excuse a bit of chaos.

I am reading
https://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Frequently_Asked_Questions#What_sort_of_real-time_performance_should_I_expect.3F

I think it sounds really interesting that you have 10-30uS latencies
back in 2007. The concept sounds thorough and tried then. So I shouldn`t
expect any big SMI messing things up, on my core2duo right?

I think I really wanna get this to work. No solutions? :)

I am reading more here:

https://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_Patch

"Works ok, but frequency scaling has to be turned off for decent
results. A task run at 1 kHz repetition rate with low load was found to
be t-distributed with 4 degrees of freedom, with 1% value 0.9842 ms, 99%
value 1.0103 ms (ideal realtime performance would get exactly 1 ms for
both values), with the frequency governor set to "performance"."

Quite low. So he has got it running with low jitter, on a core 2 quad.

SMI sounds not much of a problem then. I want this guys. Altough as said
I am buying a computer, particulary for low-jitter, we can always try
and make this work on my older box in the mean time.

Remember the prob is with threadirqs on mainline aswell. Could it be
some clockproblem? A task for the thirsty bughunter, and patch-glory to
mainline.

So there must be something wrong in your configuration, or your
hardware,or something happening in the build. Without more
information, like your .config file, the output of "gcc -v", and ideally
a picture of the error messages from the screen just as they start
happening, there isn't much more anyone can do to help you further.

You probably need to intercept the grub menu at early boot and
delete the "quiet" and "splash" options to get the normal boot
messages to show up on the screen.

Paul.

Can you provide your .config file please?

Are you having any other patches on top of -RT ?

Thanks,

That's just the tail of dmesg. I really need the whole thing from
boot.

The output of "lscpi -vvv" and "cat /proc/interrupts" might be helpful
as well.

Thanks,

So the ata controller fails. Which driver is in use?

Actually I don`t think I have a serial port, now that I think of it. Or
atleast not 2 at the moment. I can try initrd shell first, and netconsole
as the last alternative.

I can ofcourse always compile with net in, but what I needed was dmseg
right? Actually I have an old pic of this error.

Do you need more?

Peace Be With You.

If you have a serial port on that machine, then you can enable the
serial console with "console=ttyS0,115200" on the kernel command
line. Use a second machine to record the data.

If you don't have a serial, then you should be able to do something
from the initrd shell. Your ethernet driver should be loaded already,
if not just compile it into the kernel instead into a module. Now you
can get it out over the net from that shell.

A third option is to use netconsole. Do this on mainline with the
"threadirqs" option, as I haven't tried netconsole on RT.
See Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt

Good. So it's not RT wreckage :)

Ok, you reall want to know. Well I can do anything to help you with that.
Does dmseg contain info from last boot? Or can it be accessed from the
console-thingy?

Mainline does also not work with threadirq.

Peace Be With You.

No. And that's not interesting at all. We really want to know what's
going wrong when you have irq threading enabled.

You can also try the following. Compile the kernel without RT and add
"threadirqs" on the kernel command line. So that's just mainline + irq
threading. Does that work?

In any case it would be helpful if you provide the full dmesg output
of a failing boot.

Thanks,

Yes, it works fine without basic-rt, or full-rt. Do you know if basic-rt
can be compiled without threadirqs?

rootdevice issues are most likely drivers/initrd related. Does your .config match a working Kernel's .config?

basic-rt is ambiguous, but IRQ threads are required to preempt inside critical sections shared with irqs.

I think it complains about not finding rootdevice. Anyway, I am getting a
new machine, so it might not be much of an issue. If you still want to try
and find the bug let me know. Also how do I compile without threadirqs, if
I enable basic-rt, threadirqs are enabled in .config also.

Peace Be With You.

If it drops to a shell, then it's way up in user space already. Can
you provide the full dmesg output or the bootlog captured via serial
console for such a case? It looks like one of your devices is not too
happy with the forced irq threading.

Thanks,

I've updated the repo of patches to have rt3 and rt4 on master branch.

In my fixes branch (now v3.6.2-rt4-fixes) there is only the cosmetic fix
of adding a subject to the power-use-generic-rwsem-on-rt.patch,
everything else is in the main tarballs.

There is a gregkh v3.6.3 release - the series applies onto that with
only a trivial patch refresh required to kgb-serial-hackaround.patch

In fact, quilt may not even bother to warn about it, but git-am will
stop and ask you to double check things. If git-am still fails when
we get to v3.6.3-rt5, then I'll refresh it on the -fixes branch.

When enabling threaded irqs in mainline kernel, booting does not proceed,
but stops quite soon after a few messages, and drops to shell.

This is the same thing that happens on rt patch also, when enabling higher
preemption that "low latency desktop".

Peace Be With You.

Dear RT Folks,

I'm pleased to announce the 3.6.2-rt4 release. rt4 is just an update
to 3.6.2. The not announced 3.6.1-rt3 is an intermediate release with
a single change.

Changes since 3.6.1-rt2:

	* Remove the softirq noise printk

The delta patch against 3.6.1-rt2 is appended below and can be found here

  http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.6/incr/patch-3.6.1-rt2-rt3.patch.xz

The RT patch against 3.6.2 can be found here:

  http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.6/patch-3.6.2-rt4.patch.xz

The split quilt queue is available at:

  http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.6/patches-3.6.2-rt4.tar.xz

Enjoy,

	tglx
