Firmware (firmware-2-ct-non-commercial-full-13.bin) and ath10k_pci crash

Hi,

after setting up ath10k with hostapd I only get a few minutes in
working state before the system crashes -- every time.
I tried different firmwares, they all seem to crash. I updated to a
newer kernel, which delays the crash a little bit. I have already seen
that other people with Intel Atom processors (which mine uses) had
trouble, however I am not sure if both are based on the same error
message.

Any hints are appreciated. I currently use the system only for setting
up wifi, so I could run tests if required.

For this crash, the firmware crash dump cannot be read over the normal
management channel.  If you can build & boot my 3.17.8 kernel, then it should
be able to dump the firmware crash directly over some registers.

I don't have a good test case to test this particular way of reading
registers, so I'm quite interested if your system can read the crash that
way or not...

That said, your system looks quite sickly in all kinds of interesting ways,
so not sure I'll be able to actually fix the problem (and not sure the problem
is entirely in firmware).

Hi Jeremias,

did you read my previous message? It could be that this is the same
error as I already experiences. Try to disable CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE in
kernel or use kernel parameter intel_idle.max_cstate=0.

Hi Fabian,

I had a look at your report, but was not sure if it is the same issue.
I now run a kernel with CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE disabled, which increases
the time to crash greatly. The card worked for 2 days now before
crashing. Next step: disable all cores but one.

thanks for the hint. Unfortunately I am not able to create Ubuntu
packages from your kernel tree (using this howto:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild).
I will investigate and see if I can make it work, hopefully next week.

Probably my kernel has issues when debugfs is not enabled.  Please send me your
.config for the kernel, and then try enabling debugfs for ath10k and see if that
fixes things.

That might fix the build, but it disables the WMI keep-alive if
debugfs is not enabled?  Seems like I could make wmi keep-alive
work regardless...but I guess I'll have to change around the
data structures a bit.

I'll go ahead and apply these though....better than breaking the
build at least.

But, for anyone using my kernel and firmware, I suggest enabling debugfs for
ath10k..that is the only way to get good firmware crash reports and we (Candela) only
compile and test with debugfs enabled.
