Well, this is a hardware limitation. The output to SPDIF isn't attenuated
by any controls. Only the software attenuation would be possible.

physically linear) would be much easier on user space than on the kernel
space in general, too.

May I know the reason why doing PCM converting in kernel space is a bad
idea? Windows driver does this heavily (it also do sample rate convert to
48k), I am still learning using plugin.

right way. Doing this in the kernel context is a bad idea (although we
already have such a code in the oss emulation module, but it's exceptional
- I'd love to get rid of that if allowed).

control volume on my PCM/Stereo Stream..

I once added S/W volume control as in our Windows driver, but it was
rejected since ALSA team don't want DMA buffer modified by driver. I
changed the core/pcm_lib.c to multiply all PCM data with a factor, so you
can also change the PCM sent through S/PDIF. However, AC3/DTS stream
cannot be done in this way.

Summary: No volume control on SPDIF on cmedia CMI8738-MC6
Description:
There is no way to control the output volume on the SPDIF/out on my CMI8738
soundcard. It can just be switched on or off..

It's not strange. As I wrote, we need the signal attenuation in software
(since the hardware doesn't do it).
That's what Windows system does.
The soltware volume control is not implemented on ALSA yet, but, in theory
it's possible. The question is how and who does it ;)

Hm that is strange.. If i boot into windows, i can control the volume on
the wave/pcm device.. i can't control the 'master' volume though...
Is it possible to get the pcm/wave volume control set up?

Well, this is a hardware limitation. The output to SPDIF isn't attenuated
by any controls. Only the software attenuation would be possible.
