Summary: Can't access Digi32 with kernel 2.6.9
Description:
The Driver for the digi32 in kernel 2.6.9 doesn't let me access the card.
All I get is a "Device busy". With 2.6.8 everything is fine.
lsmod shows the driver as loaded, permissions are the same as with 2.6.8.

Is the driver loaded properly (i.e. you can see /proc/asound/* entries)?
If yes, the problem should be permission, or any other stuff...

Indeed, 2.6.9 is broken. But 2.6.10-rc2 with the patch from above seems to
me free of bugs again :) Well, I haven't done big tests here, but it looks
good ATM.

Thanks, the patch was applied to CVS.

Indeed, 2.6.9 is broken. But 2.6.10-rc2 with the patch from above seems to
me free of bugs again :) Well, I haven't done big tests here, but it looks
good ATM.

spirou, can you please try out the pcmnative.patch. It fixes my problems
with 2.4, but I haven't yet tried it on 2.6. I hope this patch solves it
there, too.

Takashi, the vm_flag "VM_RESERVED" is also missing, but it seems that it's
not recommended... at least for me on rme32 at the moment.

--

Summary:

The patch adds the definition vm_private_data again to
snd_pcm_lib_mmap_iomem(). It got lost during the rewrite of the mmap
stuff.

======================================================================

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 martin - 11-14-04 15:07
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It occurs in cases of "sample rate conversion"!

I've figured out that removing this line in snd_rme32_*_ops{} helps me:

//    .mmap =         snd_pcm_lib_mmap_iomem,

... at least on x86 running 2.4.26. But those lines were introduced in
1.45
because of architecture incompatibilities. So, undoing it will not solve
it
for all architectures and I fear it will only re-introduce another bug.

Maybe this problem exist also for rme96 and other cards...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 martin - 11-14-04 20:17
----------------------------------------------------------------------
spirou, can you please try out the pcmnative.patch. It fixes my problems
with 2.4, but I haven't yet tried it on 2.6. I hope this patch solves it
there, too.

Takashi, the vm_flag "VM_RESERVED" is also missing, but it seems that it's
not recommended... at least for me on rme32 at the moment.

--

Summary:

The patch adds the definition vm_private_data again to
snd_pcm_lib_mmap_iomem(). It got lost during the rewrite of the mmap
stuff.

I've choosed the word "format", because my example had unsupported channels
and unsupported sample rate. I can do more specific tests about it to find
any difference, but I'm afraid not before the weekend.

I still believe that this is the same bug. In case of this rme32 failure
the card become unusable. The dev will not be freed again. For aplay it's
impossible to get a prompt after a Ctrl-C abort. It hangs endlessly. So
any further accesses become impossible and that fits to the original
report.

Does it happen with the audio "format" conversion, too (not "rate"
conversion)?

If this happens with the rate conversion, it explains why dmix is
affected. The default rate of dmix is 48000, so playing MP3 needs the
rate conversion.

But I'm afraid that this is irrelevant from the problem of the original
bugreport. Is it true?

Summary: Can't access Digi32 with kernel 2.6.9
Description:
The Driver for the digi32 in kernel 2.6.9 doesn't let me access the card.
All I get is a "Device busy". With 2.6.8 everything is fine.
lsmod shows the driver as loaded, permissions are the same as with 2.6.8.

 martin - 11-10-04 22:33
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep. Same on my rme32 (using kernel v2.4)
But the card hangs only if I try to play an audio file which isn't
natively supported by the hardware (let's say 11025kHz,

So I guess both conditions are neccessary:
- mmap mode
- audio format conversion

I've uploaded two straces: a correct and a bad one
(11.025kHz,16bit,mono):
rme32.stracelog.FINE.gz (correct)
rme32.stracelog.WRONG.gz (bad).

 martin - 11-10-04 22:37
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Only half-duplex is affected. I dont get this bug with fullduplex=1, ->
mmap

Does this happen on yours, Martin?
It sounds like the app reopen the device before closing properly.

If this problem is reproducible, please try strace to check which call
sequence triggers the problem.

Yes, the driver is loaded. I don't think it's a permission-issue, because
it all works fine with kernel 2.6.8 with exactly the same settings. So I
think it must be "any other stuff" ;)

Summary: Can't access Digi32 with kernel 2.6.9
Description:
The Driver for the digi32 in kernel 2.6.9 doesn't let me access the card.
All I get is a "Device busy". With 2.6.8 everything is fine.
lsmod shows the driver as loaded, permissions are the same as with 2.6.8.
