I've not been able to reproduce it yet with 2.6.36-rc7, but there's
been no known recent bugfix in this area so whether the bug is fixed
or not is unknown. If I've not been able to reproduce it on -rc7 or
-rc8 after next weekend we could close the bug.

The bug could not be reproduced so far but might be real nonetheless.
Alan Stern proposed a fix patch:

hi,
hot news from the front, recent tests on the pld-linux.org vendor kernel
show that the random task blocking in 2.6.35.7 during medium/heavy load (~4..25)
is related to the grsecurity patch. we'll forward problem report to the
grsec maintainer asap...

So, to make things clear, this is not a mainline kernel issue, is it?

it's easier to reproduce on single test machine (no need to playing with parallel make and nfs).
in fact this isn't a 2.6.35.5->.7 regression but 2.6.34->2.6.35. the git-bisect found
first commit that introduces the 'sync' task blocking problem here:
commit 7c8a3554c683f512dbcee26faedb42e4c05f12fa
Author: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>
Date: Tue May 18 14:29:29 2010 +0200
writeback: ensure that WB_SYNC_NONE writeback with sb pinned is sync
Even if the writeout itself isn't a data integrity operation, we need
to ensure that the caller doesn't drop the sb umount sem before we
have actually done the writeback.
This is a fixup for commit e913fc82.

I'd be thinking that kworker going wonky is something for Tejun to have
a look at.. Anyway, is it still relevant for current kernels?

It looks like the work is scheduled in loop, so the kworker acting out
seems to be the symptom of the problem not the cause. Looks like
Rafael already has a proper fix on mind, so...
Thanks.

Rather, something that _might_ work.
I'm quite confident that this is a BIOS issue. Apparently, the BIOS tells us
we can control PCI Express hotplug, but then it tries to do that itself via
ACPI at the same time and that leads to a GPE storm. We may try to poke the
BIOS a bit differently than we do right now, but whether or not it helps is
to be seen.
Also, we can try to handle both ACPI-based and native PCIe hotplug
simultaneously at the same port, but that's going to be tricky.
We still can use DMI-based blacklisting as the last resort.
Thanks,
Rafael
