Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1845
Category: PCI - atiixp
Reproducibility: always

Status: assigned
Distribution: Debian Etch/Testing
Kernel Version: 2.6.12 compiled for k7

======================================================================
Summary: No reported errors, just no sound
Description:
Apologies in advance if this already has been covered...

Using Debian's standard ALSA configuration tools, the hardware is located
and supposedly configured, but no sound actually comes out through either
the built-in speakers or through the headphone jack. alsamixer allows me
to enable/disable and control volumes, and aplay, xmms, mpg123, and zinf
with the ALSA plugin all seem to be doing something (ie, the program
appears to play the file for the correct amount of time) but no sound is
emitted.

I've tried adding "snd-atiixp" and "snd-atiixp-modem" to /etc/modules,
I've tried commenting out, I've tried having an "alsa-base" file in
/etc/modutils and in /etc/modprobe.d (latter generated by Debian's
alsaconf util)

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated...

Haven't tried yet. I've been trying to stick with Debian stock packages.
Whenever I've used a distro that has some kind of enhanced packaging
system I've found that adding by hand ultimately breaks the package tool's
functionality.

I may have to resort to it if this doesn't work. I've also been knocking
around switching up to Sid/Unstable for a multitude of reasons, but until
2.6.16 comes out and supports the integrated ethernet controller, I have
enough reservations about making the change to hold off for now.

OK, but there's nothing we can do if you can't test the latest version...
