Dear folks @ V4L List,

I'd just quickly like to let everybody know that I am now able to
capture S-Video AND Composite video from my KWorld VS-USB2800D using the
latest development snapshot of v4l-dvb. Kudos to Douglas Schilling
Landgraf for helping me with the steps to download and recompile the
v4l-dvb drivers, specifically the em28xx driver which pertains to my
capture device.

As a nice side effect, I am also now able to select a new audio capture
device embedded in the VS-USB2800D device instead of using the extra
line-in wire that comes out of the device. I used to have to feed that
cable into the line-in of my sound card. Now, I get an actual device
called "Empia Em28xx Audio Empia 28xx Capture (ALSA)" in Ubuntu's Sound
Preferences dialog.

These are the steps I followed to get the driver downloaded and compiled
(again, thanks Douglas):

1) rmmod em28xx (remove any driver pre-loaded)

2) Check version of your kernel
   uname -r

3) Making backup
   cp -R /lib/modules/KERNELVERSION/kernel/drivers/media/video/em28xx
      /BACKUPDIR

4) Installing dev stuff
   apt-get install build-essential mercurial -y

5) Download and recompile
shell> hg clone http://www.linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb
shell> cd v4l-dvb
shell> make
shell> make unload
shell> make install
shell> dmesg -c (clear your dmesg)
shell> modprobe em28xx

The new dmesg output is:
> [13703.852052] usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
> [13703.985055] usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

So finally I can use the device the way I had intended it to: Play Super

Subject: KWorld VS-USB2800D recognized as PointNix Intra-Oral Camera -
No Composite Input

Hi video4linux list,

This may be something that has been asked in the past. I have a KWorld
VS-USB2800D video capture device and my Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty recognizes it
as a PointNix Intra-Oral Camera. The only thing that works is the
S-Video input. However, I'd like to use the Composite input (regular
yellow RCA). So here's the dmesg:

Notice how it only generates /dev/video0 and /dev/vbi0. I would have
expected to see two additional devices, like /dev/video1 and /dev/vbi1.

Maybe the detected Intra-Oral camera doesn't have that input, but the
KWorld VS-USB2008D does. What can be done to make the driver recognize
the Composite input correctly?

Thanks for any help...

Hello Kay,

Yeah, I added support for that device last week. However, the fact
that the audio device is being created is actually a bug. That
particular board does not support providing the audio over the USB
port. I submitted a PULL request last night to prevent the audio
device from being created for that board.

Are you saying that the audio device is actually delivering sound? If
so, I definitely would like you to contact me since I have no idea how
that is possible and would want to know more.

Devin

Devin,

You're right. I'm not getting any audio from that device. My excitement
was premature. The Composite video, however, works great now. Thanks for
that.

Just an FYI: the fix went in last night so that the /dev/audio device
won't get created for the KWorld 2800d. This will help eliminate user
confusion in the future (since users will now not see a audio device
that will never work).

Cheers,

Devin

Does anyone know of any similar hardware to the KWorld VS-USB2800D that has
built in support from Ubuntu 9.04/9.10?

Many thanks in advance,

Chris

The KWorld 2800D works in 9.10 out-of-the-box (the support was merged
in 2.6.31).

Cheers,

Devin

Is this hardware any good? There is a lot of 1 star reviews on amazon.co.uk,
but I'm not sure if it's user error rather than the hardware....

Many thanks,

Chris

It's not a bad piece of hardware in terms of capture quality. Bear in
mind that it only has S-Video and composite inputs - it does not have
a tuner. Also, the audio feed comes through the external cable, so
you need to hook that to the line-in on your soundcard. It also
doesn't have an IR receiver or blaster, so not well suited for
controlling a cable box.

One more warning: they just released a new version of the product
which uses a different chip. As a result, if you haven't bought it
yet you might end up with the new version, which *is* supported in the
latest v4l-dvb tree, but that support was introduced after Ubuntu 9.10
took the kernel.

In other words, it's all about what you intend to do with the product.

Devin

I have a freeview terrestial hard-disc recorder with just a scart out
connection. To burn off the recorded programs I normally plug a scart dvd
recorder into the hard-disc recorder. Instead of using the dvd recorder, I
would like to copy the recorded programs onto my laptop.

Many thanks,

Chris
