Hello All,

  I'm trying to set up a TeVii S470 DVB-S2 card for use in my MythTV
  system running on Fedora 13. I already have a couple of TT S-1401
  cards in that machine, and it works fine.

  I copied the firmware for my S470 as described on the Wiki page.
  The card is detected and seem to work. I am able to watch existing
  channels, and even found some DVB-S2 transponders.

  But the machine is very unstable. After a while, I get a lot of
  errors in my /var/log/messages , like:

May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xb2(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x03, value == 0x11)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_tuner_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x42, value == 0x73)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x03, value == 0x11)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_tuner_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x05, value == 0x01)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x03, value == 0x11)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_tuner_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x62, value == 0xf5)

May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  3 22:35:51 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)

There are a lot of lines like these in the log (tens or even
hundreds per second). And at some point the machine just freezes -
stops responding completely. It happens even if I'm not watching
anything.

If I take the S470 out, my machine works just fine again.

Some more info from the log - perhaps something could be useful:

I searched the Net and found a similar question that was raised some time
ago, but there was not even a discussion on this topic...

If someone else has the same DVB-S card - please share your
experience! I'd appreciate any ideas!

Hello Andrew, I have same DVB-S2 card on a Debian Squeeze system, I
have installed this way:

mkdir /usr/local/src/dvb
cd /usr/local/src/dvb
wget http://tevii.com/100315_Beta_linux_tevii_ds3000.rar
unrar x 100315_Beta_linux_tevii_ds3000.rar
cp dvb-fe-ds3000.fw /lib/firmware/
tar xjvf linux-tevii-ds3000.tar.bz2
cd linux-tevii-ds3000

It works for me, sometimes I have those message on /var/log/messages:

May  4 13:43:14 htpc kernel: [11575.358334] ds3000_firmware_ondemand:

But it works well, I use it with MythTV, SD and HD channels.

Let me know if you need some test.

Kind regards.

Hello Andrew, I have same DVB-S2 card on a Debian Squeeze system, I
have installed this way:

mkdir /usr/local/src/dvb
cd /usr/local/src/dvb
wget http://tevii.com/100315_Beta_linux_tevii_ds3000.rar
unrar x 100315_Beta_linux_tevii_ds3000.rar
cp dvb-fe-ds3000.fw /lib/firmware/
tar xjvf linux-tevii-ds3000.tar.bz2
cd linux-tevii-ds3000
make && make install

It works for me, sometimes I have those message on /var/log/messages:

May  4 13:43:14 htpc kernel: [11575.306168] ds3000_firmware_ondemand:
Waiting for firmware upload (dvb-fe-ds3000.fw)...
May  4 13:43:14 htpc kernel: [11575.306181] cx23885 0000:05:00.0:
firmware: requesting dvb-fe-ds3000.fw
May  4 13:43:14 htpc kernel: [11575.358334] ds3000_firmware_ondemand:
Waiting for firmware upload(2)...

But it works well, I use it with MythTV, SD and HD channels.

Let me know if you need some test.

Kind regards.

Hello Josu,

Thanks a lot for your response!

What kernel version do you have?
Do you see your card's MAC address in the /var/log/messages when
the driver is loading? I'm not sure if it matters, but I see my
old TT S-1401 cards' MAC addresses in the logs, but I don't see the
MAC of S470 anywhere... Maybe it just a specific of the driver...

As Igor wrote earlier, I probably need to upgrade my kernel. Well, I'm
not really looking forward to do that, since it is likely to
break other things for me. But if that's the only way - I guess I'll
have to give it a try.

Thanks again!

I installed the latest s2-liplianin drivers, but I still seem to have
the same issue. The card works fine for some time after reboot, then I
am starting to get the following errors in the system log:

And then my machine just stops responding - even on the ssh sessions.

A friend of mine installed the same S470 card a few days ago. He's
using Fedora 14 (kernel 2.6.35) and he says his machine started to
'hang' sporadically, too... I guess he might have a similar issue...

How could I track what is going on?

Dear All,

I still have this very annoying issue. I see no obvious reason, but
my DVB-S card just stops locking the signal, I get really a lot of
these errors in my syslog:

May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0xd(error=-5)
May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x03, value == 0x12)
May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_tuner_readreg: reg=0x3d(error=-5)
May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_writereg: writereg error(err == -5, reg == 0x03, value == 0x12)
May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_tuner_readreg: reg=0x21(error=-5)
May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0x8c(error=-5)
May  9 19:04:33 localhost kernel: ds3000_readreg: reg=0x8d(error=-5)

and then the machine just freezes. Could it be some buffer overflow?

How could I track it?

The machine is perfectly stable when S470 card is out...

Sorry for replying to my own's post, as I just want to make this
information available in case someone would find this mail thread
later.

The issue appear to be related to S470 overheating. I discovered that
my S470 became very-very hot right after I power the machine up, and
recently it started to freeze right after the boot. So the board was
shipped to the dealer for tests / exchange, and my machine is back to
normal operation (without a DVB-S2 card, temporarily).

My friend's board is slightly cooler - so putting a fan blowing
directly on the board seem to solve the problem for him completely
(no freezes for three days now).

So it's very likely to be hardware-related, and not a driver /
configuration issue.
