After loading RHEL5 onto a system and then configuring the security in
accordance with the NSA Guide, I cannot boot the system. I am getting
the error :

Memory for crash kernel (0x0 to 0x0) not within permissible range

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block (0,0)

I believe there may be a problem with the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. I
can boot the system with a Fedora livecd but am denied access to modify
the file. Any words of help?

Thanks

Gene Rye

I believe that after you boot from the live cd, you can remount the boot
partition with something like

mount -o rw,remount <device for boot partition>

such as

mount -o rw,remount /dev/sda1

if the boot /boot were on /dev/sda1

and you can just type

mount

to find out where /boot is currently mounted

Good Luck

PS -
The "memory for crash kernel ..." thing is, I think, normal

You can also use the rescue image and it makes everything accessible so that you can
fix things.

Try using a 2.4.x (= working) kernel.

Hi
Can any body gove me some insight inot the following error?

When I try to boot a kernel based on 2.6.3, it crashes when starting
init:

Root is on /dev/hda3, and everything on thet filesystem is newly
recompiled (linuxfromscratch) using gcc-3.3.2

Same thing happens when I try the ELDK2.x and ELDK 3.0 filesystems with
a 2.6 kernel

This is on a MPC8266 cpu

I have tried the dynamic version (against glibc-2.3.3) an a static
version.
(the dump is from the static version)

EXT3 FS on hda3, internal journal
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem).

What's the CPU, specifically?

In arch/i386/kernel/bluesmoke.c, function intel_mcheck_init, find
        if(c->x86 == 5)
        {
and insert 'return;' after '{'. The P5 machine check handler does not
work for all systems, reason unknown.

The machine that is being built is an old AST Advantage with a pentium
75 chip.
I realize that this is an ``Ancient'' machine, but I'm using it for a
dmz machine behind my firewall.

I used the same .config file for each instance of the kernel compile
with the following:

gzip -cd patch-2.4.?.gz | patch -p0
cd linux
make mrproper
cp ../AST.config .config
make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage

copy kernel to the old box via scp
copy System.map to the old box
reboot the old box and see what happens

Here is the .config file:

1.1.3 kernel :-)

Any help would be greatly appreciated
