Hello,

Sorry for disturbing.

I want to test how to use cgroup v2 on kernel 4.6.2.
And I have read https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cgroup-v2.txt
According to the above document, I added kernel parameter cgroup_no_v1=1.
But, system still automount the v1 cgroup.
Then, I executed:
# mount -t cgroup2 none /mnt

But, cgroup.controllers in /mnt is empty.

I'm not sure if I made something wrong or cgroup v2 is not supported on kernel 4.6.2?

Thanks

It should work. Can you post the outputs of "dmesg" and "cat /proc/cgroups"?

Thanks.

There are not so many cgroup v1 hierarchy mounted.
But it seems there is still not cgroup v2 hierarchy mounted.

# mount -l | grep cgroup

And, is there a document saying cgroup_no_v1 accepts which parameters?

Hi, Ma,

> Ah, it seems work, but I'm not sure.

>> Then, I executed:
>> # mount -t cgroup2 none /mnt

It should work. The thing is, according to my trials from the past, it could be that systemd triggers mounting of cgroup V1 controllers. When I made trials with cgroup v2, eventually I turned on to disros which do not run systemd (namely, it was Ubuntu. You can set Ubuntu not to use systemd, even in most recent Ubuntu systems, where systemd became the default).

What happens if you mount cgroup v2 now, after booting with cgroup_no_v1=all:
mount -t cgroup2 none /mnt

And then try to unmount cgroup v1 controllers like memory ?
Do you see anything under /mnt?

And BTW (really a shameless plug), if you want to make experiments with the new
cgroup v2 API, may I refer you to this article:

Yes, after booting with cgroup_no_v1, then execute
#mount -t cgroup2 none /mnt
#cat /mnt/cgroup.controllers
io memory

There are controllers io and memory.
But, cgroup2 is not mounted in the system by default?

because systemd hasn't supported cgroup2 yet.

Hi all,

> because systemd hasn't supported cgroup2 yet.

This is indeed so; systemd has support, from v226 (September 2015) for the new cgroup API via a
kernel command-line option: 'systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=1', which uses
a (meanwhile) deprecated mount option of cgroups. See:
https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/systemd-devel/2015-September/034177.html

Probably systemd will migrate to using cgroup v2 according to its current implementation
soon.

It's being worked on will be there in the next release.

This is the right answer. I've spent ages trying to figure out how to
do it on my openSUSE laptop because I actually want to demo the v2 API.
However, it seems to be impossible. You can't prevent systemd from
mounting the v1 hierarchies and that means you can't get v2 ones
running. The only real way to do it on a modern laptop is to use a
virtual machine (sadly you can't use a container because systemd has
already contaminated the host kernel). I tend to use debian because
they have an installation procedure for dumping systemd:

http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_remove_systemd_from_a_Debian_jessie/sid_installation

But I suppose this systemdless Devuan distribution might do as well
(not tried it):

* That's what cgroup_no_v1= option is for.

* For a while systemd had a bug where it created sub cgroups even for
controllers which don't have any resource limits configured. This
has been fixed for a while now and you should be able to umount
hierarchies with unused hierarchies now (it's ugly but does work).

Thanks.
