Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

OK, I found ALSA-Configuration.txt!
With model=5stack there are some improvements:
Back panel input to LineIN works as expected this way
Back panel input to Mic works as expected this way
but Front panel Mic still doesn't work, but input to front panel
Headphone accepts input and it shows under FrontMic on alsamixer
Back panel LineOut/speakers works as expected, shows as Front under
alsamixer
Back panel side-surround has stereo sound, shows as Surround under
alsamixer
Nothing shows on Back panel CenterSurround/Subwoofer,
Nothing shows on Back panel Rear-Surround

The problem is that your BIOS is incomplete, at least it doesn't initialize
the audio device properly. So, we have to figure out the pin
configuration manually.

When you build the alsa-driver with --with-debug=full option, you can
choose model=test. With this model, you can choose almost all possible
configuration for your device. Note that the enum control can be changed
via alsamixer with up/down keys.

Ah, found them!

Applied the patches. The device is now properly identified without model
option, /proc/asound/card*/codec* is the same as before, and the result
of alsactl -F -f /etc/asound.state no longer contains the IEC958 entries,
but is otherwise the same, and finally all the jacks behave as expected.
Thanks for your help!

Some comments:
1) It might be worth a log message that identifies the probe result, I
don't see a simple way to identify the selected configuration. Am I
   missing something?
2) Would there be a way to express the entries in alc880_test_mixer that
caused the module startup to fail for me such that the startup could
proceed anyway? It would have been helpful to use model=test without
   a rebuild for each failure.
3) Would it be possible to have a "Headphone Playback Switch" that works
separately from the "Front Playback Switch" in 6stack as with 5stack?

And finally a question, somewhat related to 3) above:
How do the Audio Selectors (Node 0x10 through 0x13 in my case) work,
could one build a mode switch that could select which channel the
Headphone is attached to (like the capture channels)?

Thanks again, AG

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

OK, creating 6stack without digital is easy. I'll work on it.

Just give the output of lspci -nv. This should contain the PCI subsystem
IDs to recognize. The PCI class ID is irrelevant.

After some scrounging around in alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c, I
have come to the conclusion that although I don't believe there is any
access to digital output on my system, the proper model to use is
6statack-digout (Watch the spelling, I don't presume this was intended!).
With this model selected as option, everything seems to fall into place.

Unfortunately the PCI code on my system doesn't yet recognize Class
0x0403,
but otherwise, here is the output from scanpci -vv for the device:
pci bus 0x0000 cardnum 0x1b function 0x00: vendor 0x8086 device 0x2668
 Intel Corp. Device unknown
CardVendor 0x1019 card 0xa884 (Card unknown)
  STATUS 0x0010 COMMAND 0x0006
  CLASS 0x04 0x03 0x00 REVISION 0x04
  BIST 0x00 HEADER 0x00 LATENCY 0x00 CACHE 0x08
  BASE0 0x00000000fbe38004 addr 0x00000000fbe38000 MEM 64BIT
  MAX_LAT 0x00 MIN_GNT 0x00 INT_PIN 0x01 INT_LINE 0x0a
  BYTE_0 0x03 BYTE_1 0x00 BYTE_2 0x00 BYTE_3 0x00
The vendor and device numbers seem to match the corresponding entries in
the
table in the code. It would be interesting to know why the device isn't
properly recognized.

Here is /proc/asound/card0/codec#2 from the modified version of
alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c. Note that everything seems to be
almost as expected and rather complete. The only "mismatch" is that the
machine manual calls the mixer (0x0d) associated with node 0x15
"Rear Surround", and of course the assignments for node 0x19 and 0x1b
are reversed from those for the current 5stack model, and the audio
selector nodes 0x10 through 0x13 are used differently.

Here goes:

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In order to avoid the failure of snd-hda-intel with model=test, I have
selectively eliminated entries in alc880_test_mixer[] = {} in
alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c. By deleting the entries for
"CLFE Playback Volume", "Side Playback Volume", "Capture Volume",
"Capture Switch", "Capture Volume 1", "Capture Switch 1", and
"Input Source", I can build a module that loads without error, and
I can identify the 3 input sources, including the FrontMic, but I
have also eliminated a lot of stuff.

How can I get the missing stuff to work??

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 alfred-ganz - 06-26-05 04:29
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is /proc/asound/card0/codec#2 from the modified version of
alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c.

Here goes:

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

When I rebuilt with --with-debug=full, but then loaded snd-hda-intel
with model=5stack, Front/LineOut, SideSurround, RearSurround, and
CenterSurround work all fine, I don't understand why it is different
with the debug enabled code?? Also, Front panel Headphone and Front
panel Mic don't work right yet.
Questions:
Why did things change between the vailla build and the debug build?
Note that alsamixer shows different channels than before, there are now
three Capture channels, and the Headphone channel no longer has volume
control.
Why do I have to use a different order of mod=probe's in order to
avoid error messages (currently snd, snd-page-alloc, snd-pcm,
snd-hda-codec,
and finally snd-hda-intel)?
How do I find out how to change assignments for the Front panel jacks,
and how is this information saved to carry it over reboot?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 alfred-ganz - 06-25-05 21:28

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

The problem is that your BIOS is incomplete, at least it doesn't initialize
the audio device properly. So, we have to figure out the pin
configuration manually.

When you build the alsa-driver with --with-debug=full option, you can
choose model=test. With this model, you can choose almost all possible
configuration for your device. Note that the enum control can be changed
via alsamixer with up/down keys.

Here is what I get in the kernel logs:
kernel: ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:00:1b.0[A] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ

What do I do now??

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

What is your machine above all? Any relevant kernel message if you use the
CVS version (you should have one)?

You can try different model type via model=xxx module option for
snd-hda-intel. See ALSA-Configuration.txt.

Also, attach the output of /proca/sound/card0/codec#* file for checking.

Machine is Acer APFV
Sound as stated earlier: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)
It has 6 jacks in the back, 2 jacks in the front
back output: LineOut, (Rear) SideSurround, CenterSurround, Rear,
back input: LineIn, Mic,
front output: Headphone,
front input: FrontMic.

Where can I find: "See ALSA-Configuration.txt"
did a "find" over the cvs tree, didn't find it?

Here is /proc/asound/card0/codec#2:

I see no difference in behavior between the driver in
alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2 and the one built from current cvs sources,
except that I now need to first modprobe snd-page-alloc.
Here is what I can observe:
Front jack shows stereo output,
Front Mic jack shows sound, I presume Headphone,
With channels set to ch6, LineIn jack shows stereo sound, I presume
Surround, no other jacks show output.
Headphone jack accepts line input,
no other jack seems to accept input.

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

The real problem is that there is no proper depmod dependency for
snd-page-alloc. If I do modprobe snd-page-alloc ; modprobe snd-hda-intel
the errors go away!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 alfred-ganz - 06-24-05 17:26
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I see no difference in behavior between the driver in
alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2 and the one built from current cvs sources,
except that I now need to first modprobe snd-page-alloc.

There seem to be mismatches in what I build, what should I build?
Here are the messages:
kernel: snd_pcm: disagrees about version of symbol snd_dma_reserve_buf
kernel: snd_pcm: disagrees about version of symbol snd_dma_free_pages
there are more of these!
My question is again, how do I get a coherent source set from which to
build?
I just did an update from the cvs sources.

Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

Make sure you unloaded snd-page-alloc module before loading snd-hda-intel.
alsasound init script doesn't unload it.

If you still have the similar error, take a look at kernel error messages.
Usually you have unresolved symbols or errors there.

Tried to build from cvs, build works, but got "Unknown symbol" for a bunch
of things when loading snd_hda_intel: snd_pcm_suspend_all snd_hda_resume
snd_pcm_hw_constraint_integer snd_hda_build_controls etc.
How do I get a coherent release from cvs?

circuitry on the mic jack, but none on the headphone jack, so reversing

Yup, I had not enabled c6 mode with alsamixer, the default was c2, and
now I can hear rear right and left on Line In, but nothing on the Side
Surround Jack, and nothing on Center/Subwoofer and LFE.

Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1209
Category: PCI - hda-intel
Reproducibility: always
Severity: minor
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution:
Kernel Version:

======================================================================
Summary: Headphone and Front Mic are switched
Description:
I installed alsa-driver-1.0.9b.tar.bz2, and the back panel
assignments that I can test seem to be assigned properly.
However, there is some sound coming out of the front mike jack,
and input is accepted through the headphone jack. Since these
jacks work as expected with Windows XP, I suspect that they are
misassigned in the driver.
Hardware: RealTek ALC655 AC'97 with ALC880(D)

Please let me know if there is anything else that you need from
me.

Thank you, AG

Today I made some experiments with speaker-test, using -c6, and I now
suspect that there are other assignments that are not right.
with speaker-test -c6, which indicates "Playback device is plughw:0,0",
I only get output on front right and front left. Unfortunately I don't
know if I did this test right, while I am sure about headphone front mic
switch!

Yup, I had not enabled c6 mode with alsamixer, the default was c2, and
now I can hear rear right and left on Line In, but nothing on the Side
Surround Jack, and nothing on Center/Subwoofer and LFE.
