You all know the drill by now: another week, another -rc.

Nothing in particular stands out that I can recall. As usual, it's
mostly driver updates (65%), of which a large piece (by line count) is
just the removal of a staging driver that isn't really ready nor
making any progress. But on the "somewhat more likely to cause
excitement" front, there's some radeon/nouveau drm updates too.

Outside of drivers, you have CIFS, ceph and xfs filesystem updates,
and sparc/blackfin on the arch side. And various random noise -
networking, fsnotify, an anonvma locking fix etc. The appended
shortlog gives a fairly good idea of what kinds of things have been
going on.

Anyway, I'm hoping it is going to be an extremely boring -rc, because
I'm just about to leave for LinuxCon Brazil, and while I'll follow
issues over email, I'm not planning to do any pulls for the next week.

                                  Linus

FWIW, the S-o-b tag got into the author field here.

(Looking at `git log --author="Signed-off-by"`, this has happened a
couple of times before. Might be worth stripping automatically.)

I'm still seeing the regression from -rc1 that the start of the early
serial output only contains garbage.

I'm blaming commit 8fee13a48e4879fba57725f6d9513df4bfa8e9f3 (x86,
setup: enable early console output from the decompressor), because if
I'm disabling the new serial_putchar() in
arch/x86/boot/compressed/misc.c by putting "return;" in its first
line, the output returns to normal.

Here the different outputs from the serial console:
Start of output from 2.6.35:

I can't see anything wrong with this commit, but it looks to me, as if
the newly added decompressor output gets corrupted somewhere. Could it
be my nondefault baud rate at 115200?

Thanks for looking at this,
              Torsten

please check if following work...
debug fastboot console=uart8250,io,0x3f8,115200 console=tty1 crypt_root=/dev/md3 radeon.modeset=1 video=1280x1024

and

this one should fix the problem.

[PATCH] x86, setup: fix earlyprint=serial,ttyS0...

Torsten reported that there is garbage output,
after commit 8fee13a48e4879fba57725f6d9513df4bfa8e9f3 (x86,
setup: enable early console output from the decompressor)

it turns out we missed the offset for that case.

earlyprintk could take io port.

So we need to handle this case in setup code too, otherwise 0x3f8
will be treated as baud rate.

Couldn't get a chance to check this, but I guess this is perhaps due to
the recent crypto patches..

Suresh, yes, cifs auth and signing code using kernel crypto (shash) apis.

fs/cifs/Kconfig

        select CRYPTO_MD5
        select CRYPTO_ARC4

Either CIFS should depend on CRYPTO:
change
	depends on INET
to
	depends on INET && CRYPTO

or it can also select CRYPTO.

Will someone tak care of frequent git updates for kernel?

OK - will fix this for cifs. Looks like ecryptfs chose "depends on CRYPTO"
and ubifs chose "select CRYPTO" - but for network file system seems like
"select CRYPTO" (rather than depends on) makes more sense.

The ceph file system seems like it has the same type of problem.
fs/ceph/Kconfig
has "select CRYPTO_AES" but not "select CRYPTO"

What about a non-hexadecimal port? It seems more logical to me to move
the strncmp() up and test that before using simple_strtoull().

non-hex is not supported...

                        early_serial_base = simple_strtoul(s, &e, 16);

                if (*s == ',')
                        s++;

so it check 0x too.

x86, setup: Fix earlyprintk=serial,ttyS0,115200

Torsten reported that there is garbage output,
after commit 8fee13a48e4879fba57725f6d9513df4bfa8e9f3 (x86,
setup: enable early console output from the decompressor)

It turns out we missed the offset for that case.

x86, setup: Fix earlyprintk=serial,0x3f8,115200

earlyprintk can take and I/O port, so we need to handle this case in
the setup code too, otherwise 0x3f8 will be treated as a baud rate.

Can somebody explain the differences between

	earlycon=uart,...
	earlycon=uart8250,...
	earlyprintk=serial,...
	console=uart,...
	console=uart8250,...

I'm not really convinced we need them all, and it's getting a
little confusing.

Some of them come from the embedded industry, where it's felt that you
have to be able to specify the exact parameters because there are no
standards, and some come from the PC world where "serial port 0" is a
well-defined concept and noone wants to bloody call it "uart8250,0x3f8".

OK, my fault for not asking a specific question :-) Let me try again.

For "earlycon=" and "console=", we support both "uart" and "uart8250".
I see the value of "uart8250", because we might want to support a
non-8250 UART someday. But keeping "uart" just seems confusing.

We support both of the following, but I can't tell what the difference
is or why we need both:

    earlycon=uart8250,io,0x3f8,9600n8
    console=uart8250,io,0x3f8,9600n8

We support both of the following (per kernel-parameters.txt, anyway),
but again, I don't know what the difference is:

    earlyprintk=serial,ttyS0
    earlyprintk=ttyS0

If we don't like "uart8250,io,0x3f8" (which I agree is awfully clunky),
we could easily add something like "console=com1" which encapsulated
the well-defined PC concept. It would be similar to "earlyprintk=ttyS0",
and if it could be made *enough* like it, maybe "earlyprintk=ttyS0"
could be dropped.

I also see the recent "earlyprintk=hsu" patch from Feng Tang, and I
wonder whether that could be recast in the "console=hsu" style. Like
"com1", "hsu" is apparently enough to specifically identify a device.

I think it's nicer to extend "console=" in ways that allow early
devices, because then users don't have to mess with both "console="
and "earlyprintk=". The 8250_early driver has a reasonable model
of switching from the early device to the real one automatically,
so maybe something like this is all we would need:

    console=ttyS0 (late only, use whatever device becomes ttyS0)
    console=com1 (early and late, use I/O port 0x3f8 on PCs)
    console=hsu (early and late, use Medfield UART)
    console=uart8250,mmio,... (early and late, for MMIO UARTs)
    console=uartXYZ,mmio,... (early and late, for non-8250 UARTs)
    console=vga (early and late, use legacy VGA (switch to tty0 late))
    console=tty0   (late only)

console=ttyS0 ... already works fine.

console= is supported multiple times, and enabling console= shouldn't
necessarily enable earlyprintk...

But yes, it's ugly and we have bass-ackwards compatibility problem...

Yes, but it doesn't give you early output. You have to wait until the
8250 driver loads and figures out which device will be ttyS0.

If we use "console=tty0" or "console=ttyS0", those are device names
that don't work until the driver is loaded. But if we specify the
device explicitly, via "uart8250", "com1", "hsu", "vga", etc., we
can make the console work early using a minimal driver, then switch
to the regular driver later.

The question is whether that would be good enough to let us remove
the "earlycon=" and "earlyprintk=" stuff.

> But yes, it's ugly and we have bass-ackwards compatibility problem...

I think earlycon and earlyprintk have minimal backwards compatibility
problems, since they're mostly for developers. And if we decided
we did need to keep them, they could be undocumented and implemented
on top of "console=" with the appropriate explicit device.

I guess this is all just hot air since I don't have time to actually
produce any patches :-(

The problem is that they're actually hard-coded into the firmware of
some embedded devices.
