Referring to the original posting from [1]:

I am on latest linux-next (next-20110118) which has also [3] included,
x86_32 and using binutils-2.21 with PR ld/12327 fix from
Debian/experimental (see [2]).

AFAICS the changes to my kernel-config... You are on x86_64 and have not set:

CONFIG_RELOCATABLE=y
CONFIG_X86_NEED_RELOCS=y

Ifdef *also* for CONFIG_RELOCATABLE for the parts in commit from [3] ?

Can't boot here too. I don't have CONFIG_RELOCATABLE set on 64-bit.

Reverting the commit solves the problem.

commit 86b1e8dd83cbb0fcbf3d61d2b461df8be1f528cf
Author: Shaohua Li <shaohua.li@intel.com>

x86: Make relocatable kernel work with new binutils

The CONFIG_RELOCATABLE=y option is broken with new binutils, which will make
    boot panic.

According to Lu Hongjiu, the affected binutils are from 2.20.51.0.12 to
2.21.51.0.3, which are release since Oct 22 this year. At least
ubuntu 10.10 is

And not build the kernel on widely released distributions? I'm not sure that's
acceptable.

That is surprisingly painful, which is why the high frequency of binutils bugs is a major headache to us in the kernel world. Either way the current code is just hacky.

OK, this is just messed up. If we need jiffies in a special section
then we should declare it as such (see __jiffy_data), but it's not clear
to me why we would. This seems like hack upon hack.

However, I suspect we may want to put jiffies into a .S file, and that
.S file needs to take into account architectures which need underscore
prefixes (which really sucks to have in ELF and is a major fail on those
ABI designers...)

Hmm, a slightly modified version of the reverted patch works here for
both 32/64 bit kernels and with old/new binutils too. Maybe we can use
it currently till we remove the link script trick?

Please try hpa's patch in this thread on top of very latest (today's) -git or latest

Does that result in a booting system? That way we can avoid most of the linker
script madness.

Same thing here on x86_64 with Binutils 2.21.0.20101217. Boot stops
after "Booting the kernel" message, regardless of whether
CONFIG_RELOCATABLE is set or not.

System.map has
ffffffff02c92880 D jiffies_64

Reverting the patch also solved the problem for me.

Alex.

Kernel build script should check known broken linkers
and refuse to use it.

it's not a build failure, without it, my i386 kernel can't boot
actually.

Thanks,
Shaohua

Ok - until it's resolved i'll queue up a revert - a known build failure is preferred
to a boot regression.

Either way... the whole jiffies vs jiffies_64 thing is kind of
ridiculous. We should be able to do it in a completely
architecture-generic way by either making it a union(!) (with "jiffies"
and "jiffies_64" presumably would be #defines, or we do a global replace
across the tree), moving the variable declaration itself to a .S file
(which would only have data components and therefore would be
arch-generic) or doing something like the attached (untested since it is
1 am here) patch.

This should let us get rid of the hacks in *all* the architectures, not
just x86.

Hmm, reproduce it here with binutils-2.21.51.0.6-20110118
but not with GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu) 2.20.51-system.20100908
I got this in system.map: ffffffff03514880 D jiffies_64, which looks
wrong.
looks binutils changed something again.
Have no idea, CC Lu Hongjiu.

Thanks,
Shaohua

I'm running the latest binutils:
GNU ld (Linux/GNU Binutils) 2.21.51.0.5.20110104
