Hallo everybody,

Dell is offering me a notebook with the following chipset:

Intel QM57/QS57 NB Gfx - Intel UMA HD
Discrete

It is not "clearly" listed at

http://intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html

I searched the archives, and googled around a bit but did not find a
clear answer.

Is it supported by the intel driver and or Xorg ?

Any known problems/trouble with it ?

thanks and best regards
Andreas

If I understand the nomenclature (does anybody?), that chipset would only
be used with discrete GPUs - there being no FDI link from the chip to
drive any displays. (At least by applying the desktop naming scheme to the
mobile world.)

On the other hand, our 2010Q4 release has solid support for SandyBridge
including 2D, 3D and video (decode) acceleration. It will be some time
before that is available from stable distributions, but there should be
a repo for driver updates in the distro of your choice.

Hi Chris,

thanks for the quick response.

Doing some research, I got a little further:

Their offering an Intel Core i7-640M based system. This processor
includes

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD Graphics aka GMA HD aka Intel HD
Graphics (formerly known as GMA 5700 MHD) graphics card. :)

Unfortunately, looking at
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html I'm still not quite
sure whether this is supported by the intel driver.

Any help still appreciated

best regards
Andreas

Eeek, I was on the wrong generation of processors (thinking you were
concerned about the newly available chipsets not last years! ;-). That's
an Arrandale chip and should be fully supported by any recent
distribution.

I am running a Dell Latitude E6410 with those specs.
Using a kernel built from the drm-intel-next branch the system works
almost flawlessly.

Internal / external display, suspend / resume works.

But this is only true for the drm-intel-next based kernel. Older ones up
to 2.6.37 booted and resumed to a blank screen with this hardware.

Hope this helps,
Christoph

Hallo Christoph,

thanks for warning me now (I was just about to give Dell my credit card
number ;).

In fact, I was expecting a vanilla fedora 14 to be working without
trouble (I don't consider compiling and installing xorg userland code
serious trouble). Tracking/Compiling/Installing kernel sources surely is
effort I'd like to avoid.

I would appreciate if you could point me to resources dealing with the
"trouble" you mention.

BTW: They are offering a Latitude E6510 w/ i7-640M

best regards
Andreas

the bugreport for the 'blank screen on boot' issue is here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278

But there may be others dealing with suspend / resume. For me both
problems were fixed recently by patches integrated in drm-intel-next.

I guess those patches will become part of 2.6.38 or even 2.6.37.x.

Regards,
Christoph

Your hw falls into this line in http://intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html:
    HD Intel(r) HD Graphics (used in Intel(r) 2010 Core(tm) i7/i5/i3 processor family)
The CPU codename is Arrandale.
QM57/QS57 is the PCH (chipset) name.
I guess "Discrete" mentioned in Dell offer means the notebook also includes (or supports) discrete gfx card (non-Intel).
