From: Francesco Cagnin <fcagnin@quarkslab.com>

This patch series aims to add gdbstub support to HVF (the 'QEMU
accelerator on macOS that employs Hypervisor.framework') on Apple
Silicon hosts.

The proposed implementation, structured like the KVM counterpart,
handles single-stepping, software breakpoints, hardware breakpoints and
hardware watchpoints.

The patch has been most recently tested working on macOS Ventura 13.1
hosts and Linux kernel 5.19 guests with the test script
'tests/guest-debug/test-gdbstub.py' (slightly updated to make it work
with Linux kernels compiled on macOS).

v3:
* Keep separate views of DBG*_EL1 registers while guest debugging is
  enabled
NOTE: Should be implemented as Peter and Alex suggested, and works as
intended in my (limited) tests. Any other register to handle beside
  DBG*_EL1?
* Handle singlestepping over instructions triggering a VM exit
NOTE: I'm not aware of unwanted side effects, please double-check the
  fix is adequate.
* Merge patches 2 and 3 from previous patch series

v2:
* Move debug helpers to 'target/arm/hyp_gdbstub.c'
* Add support for SSTEP_NOIRQ and multi-core (thanks Mads Ynddal)
* Move calls to 'hv_vcpu_set_trap_debug_exceptions()' to
  'hvf_arch_update_guest_debug()'
* Use 'arm_num_brps()' and 'arm_num_wrps()' to compute the number of
breakpoints and watchpoints available (thanks Peter Maydell)

Francesco Cagnin (3):
  arm: move KVM breakpoints helpers
hvf: implement guest debugging on Apple Silicon hosts
hvf: handle singlestepping over instructions which trigger a VM exit

These helpers will be also used for HVF. Aside from reformatting a
couple of comments for 'checkpatch.pl' and updating meson to compile
'hyp_gdbstub.c', this is just code motion.

From: Francesco Cagnin <fcagnin@quarkslab.com>

Support is added for single-stepping, software breakpoints, hardware
breakpoints and watchpoints. The code has been structured like the KVM
counterpart (and many parts are basically identical).

Guests can be debugged through the gdbstub.

While guest debugging is enabled, the guest can still read and write the
DBG*_EL1 registers but they don't have any effect.

It seems v3 has a regression in regards to BRK instructions that I cannot
reproduce with v2. If I start QEMU and GDB with the Linux kernel (v6.0-rc5),
and set a software breakpoint at `bio_split` (probably not specific to this
function), I see messages in stdout like this:

[ 4.663981] Unexpected kernel BRK exception at EL1
[ 4.664650] Internal error: BRK handler: f2000000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP
...

Maybe the software breakpoints aren't removed/reapplied correctly in v3?

I've now observed the same messages on v2 on a co-worker's computer. Maybe it's
happening in combination with another commit on master. If I can find the time,
I'll try to bisect it.

Are you running the Linux guest on multiple cores? If yes, could you
check if the issue persists also when using a single core?

Thanks,

Yes, I was running with 2 cores. I just tested with 1 and 2 several times. I
haven't reproduced the bug with 1 core, but happens around 70% of the time with
2 cores.

I think your abstraction layer between generic hvf code and
architecture-specific hvf code is missing x86 "do nothing"
implementations of functions.

This should defer to an architecture-specific function (or just
be an architecture specific function) rather than using an inline
ifdef.

Please don't put #include lines in the middle of files -- keep them at the top.

Ideally new global functions declared in headers should
have documentation comments.

This would be much easier to understand if there was some commentary

Can you describe what's going on here? Conceptually there are two lots
of debug register state -- the one the guest vCPU has, and the one we
want to be using when we're doing gdbstub debugging. Where are we
keeping the two copies of the state, how do we decide which one to
feed to hvf as the live version, etc ?

More generally, I would prefer to be able to determine your design
by looking at the commit message and comments, rather than by
reverse-engineering it from the code :-)

thanks

I think this is probably best folded into patch 2 rather than

Pardon my naivety, since the new file only contains code from
'target/arm/kvm64.c',
should I just copy the license and copyright comments from that file
(and adjust if needed)?
I'm not able to find any particular procedure to follow.

Yes, if you've taken the code from somewhere else you should
use its copyright/license info.
