Hi,

I have a custom TI816x board that uses a modified kernel from the TI PSP.
 Kernel is of the 2.6.37 flavor.  I'm trying to migrate to OE Core
environment and I'm having trouble with getting the kernel to work.

With the toolchain in denzil (gcc version 4.6.4 20120303), kernel will at
least boot but will die with:

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000002
pgd = c0004000
[00000002] *pgd=00000000
Internal error: Oops: 5 [#1]

Any of the more modern toolchains (poky/meta-ti master or Linaro
(gcc-linaro-arm-linux-gnueabihf-4.8-2013.07-1_linux) are used, the kernel
won't even make a peep ... nothing is displayed.

I wouldn't think the version of u-boot would matter but in case it does the
one I'm using is 2010.06 that was modified from one of the TI PSP's for our
custom board.

Anyone know what I have to do to get this kernel to build with newer
toolchains?  It builds fine with the Code Sourcery arm-2009q1-203.

I haven't seen the panic, but I have seen a complete silent boot hang when
moving from 4.6 to 4.7 or 4.8 on my OMAP5 EVM board. The gcc-linaro
toolchain worked, as did a 2012.03 sourcery toolchain, but neither the
2013.05 toolchain nor the internal built yocto toolchain from 1.5/master
resulted in a successful boot. I got past that issue by cherry picking
these two commits from a more recent kernel:

455bd4c430b0c0a361f38e8658a0d6cb469942b5 - ARM: 7668/1: fix memset-related
crashes caused by recent GCC (4.7.2) optimizations
418df63adac56841ef6b0f1fcf435bc64d4ed177 - ARM: 7670/1: fix the memset fix

Presumably you may need more than just that since you're also hitting a
panic with 4.6, but it may be worth trying those as a starting point. Good

Yes, it is often a PITA to get old kernels build and work properly with new 
toolchains. E.g. you are aware of the alignment issue with 4.7, right?

I'm trying to make sense of all this ... we need to keep syslink working
too which sounds like it (mailbox) needs kernel options which may cause
problems too.

Have you tried poking into the following repositories for a possible fix:

There are some product-specific forks around TI81x which I don't have any 
visibility into and hence I can't support it in meta-ti... :(

What do you mean "old kernels"  It is from a TI PSP released not that long

No, I've not looked specifically thought those but I did go back and look
through some of my Arago & Angstrom OE Classic builds and log files to see
what switches where being used to build the kernel.  Tried several
combinations but they didn't appear to matter.  Maybe with Steve's fix and
the -mno-unaligned-access option I read about I can get farther.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll have to scan those commits to see if
anything jumps out at me.

So, cross-referencing the 2.6.37 release date of January 4, 2011 against gcc 
releases shows that you can only expect 4.4 or 4.5 to work properly out of 
the box w/o patching... :)

And I have already answered the "newer TI81x kernel" question many times, 
including the last email in this thread :)

Update.  Well, adding Sakoman's patch to head.S and compiling with
-mno-unaligned-access
didn't appear to help so far ... :(

Hi Khem,  good to hear from you.

I'll check those out.  On another machine I think I have an older Linaro
4.7 something laying around from last time I built something (well, tried
to.  Wanted DM6446 and learned it was dropped from OE Core) with Arago OE
Core a while ago.  I haven't tried that version on this Cortex A8 part but
I'm guessing I would run into the same issues as the latest (4.8) I
downloaded today???.  I'll apply those and give it a shot and report back.

Another update (any my feeble cry for ideas is at the very bottom after the
kernel boot dump).  I applied the patches Khem mentioned.  The patch
applied but I studied the code and there are big differences between 2.6.37
for ti816x vs the 3.8 for beagle.  There looked to be more in the patch
than was able to be applied so I didn't have any confidence this would fix
anything after I noticed that and when I tried to boot the kernel the hung
boot confirmed my suspicion.  At this point I'm using the toolchains
outside of OE (meta-toolchain from denzil branch and Linaro 4.8) to make
life a bit simpler.  Here is what my memset.S looks like after applying the
two patches:

I've read other messages that mailbox (mbox in the trace walk above) could
be a problem but we need to use syslink so I haven't tired turning it off
since that isn't an option.

In thinking of my options, I initially thought I could maybe get by with
continuing to use our u-boot/kernel build with CSL and just use a Cortex A8
based machine with OE Core support (beagleboard or beaglebone) and generate
the rootfs that I need that way since the ABI's should be compatible.  But
with the kernels being so far apart, now I'm thinking that is probably a
bad idea because the new packages are probably using new system calls
(built against new kernel headers) the old kernel doesn't have.  The
core-image-minimal rootfs does come up when I try using a new OE Core
rootfs with my old kernel but I noticed a strange message from udev and
then noticed that it looked like one of my udev rules wasn't working to
mount one of our usb based NAND flashes and I think that is probably
because of the differences in the ABI's I mentioned.

So I really don't know where to go from here.  I can't be stuck with OE
Classic forever.  Our customers are demanding current packages so I need OE
Core.  I guess it is possible to make poky or arago use and old toolchain
to build new OE Core packages so the ABI's all match but I've never tried
to go down that path.  I would also have make the rootfs packages be built
against my old kernel headers and I'm not too sure about how to go about
that either.

Any words of wisdom?

I've built standalone/external toolchains with poky from both densil and
master branches.  So you want me to try distro-less OE Core toolchain?

OK, that kept me busy for a while.  I built core-image-minimal -c
populate_sdk with OE Core + meta-ti and installed that on my application
development machine (bitbake build server is debian 7.1 64bit, app
development machine (behind firewall, slow network connection etc. is
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit for running Code Composer etc.)

So after installing oecore-i686-armv7a-vfp-neon-toolchain-oe-core.0.sh (I
know, I went the long way around doing this ... don't ask :) ) I built my
2.6.37 kernel that I patched memset earlier.  Different result this time.
 Looks a bit different.  Boots but dies in the same place but with a
slightly different message (I still see a bunch of mbox stuff in there
hmmm):

To build the above, I simple sourced the
/usr/local/oecore-i686/environment-setup-armv7a-vfp-neon-oe-linux-gnueabi
script and then unset LDFLAGS.

For kicks, I did a clean build of the kernel again and built with make
EXTRA_CFLAGS=-mno-unaligned-access uImage and that resulted in a hung
kernel:

​This needs to be debugged. Since 3.x kernels works fine with gcc 4.8.x, I
would assume its something that got fixed in kernel along the way. You have
to hunt
I dont have neither the platform nor another device where I use 2.6.37 so
cant help much with hunt

I can confirm that the Kevin Hilman mailbox patch that I posted the URL to
on the e2e site fixes the mbox problem and my 2.6.37 kernel built with the
OE Core toolchain (gcc 4.8) does in fact boot now!  I have a login prompt!

So to recap.  Sakoman head.S patch, the two memset patches Khem mentioned,
and this Hilman mailbox patch is what I applied.

OK, I'm in a little new territory here.  I've been attempting to add
machine support to my oe_core + meta-ti master checkout.  I've setup the
machine conf for c6a816x-evm and all the associated files using denzil as a
base.  I modified the 2.6.37 recipe to use my custom boards kernel instead
of the one from git (set SRC_URI to my .tar.bz2).  I stubbed out u-boot for
now as it was giving me problems.

First question.  I looked at my poky/meta/recipes-kernel/linux-libc-headers
dir of a denzil checkout that last had c6a816x-evm support to use as kind
of an example/guide.  I see recipes for linux-libc-headers_3.2.bb and
linux-libc-headers_3.0.8.bb.  Do I need to create a recipe for 2.6.37 and
set the SRC_URI for a 2.6.37 commit so that my rootfs packages will be
built against headers that match the version of the kernel I'm using?  It
looked like linux-libc-headers.inc has some kind of check to decide on
which headers to use (3 or 2.6) but I don't quite follow how it works yet.

Second question.  When I try to bitbake core-image-minimal after adding in
my kernel (a tar.bz2), it builds but the do_package phase gets errors:

I did some searches of this kind of error and mostly found noise but also

yes you need to add a recipe for linux-libc-headers_2.6.37….
and also make sure that your distro/machine chooses this for preferred provider for linux-libc-headers

I don't know.  I think I'm suffering from this:

... but the commit id doesn't get me anywhere when I try to see what the
fix is.  Looks like when I tared up my kernel the make clean, make
distclean didn't smoke all the bin files in scripts or something and my
bitbake build machine is 64 bit while the machine I originally built the
kernel on is 64 bit but but running 32 bit Ubuntu.  I added the
INHIBIT_PACKAGE_STRIP
= "1" to my .conf and that got me a bit further but then QA gave me a list
of all the things it didn't like so now I'm finding where all of those show
up and deleting them so hopefully that will fix it.

Well, if you use Dylan (or even Danny), it has a recipe already available in 
oe-core...

Good, I'll just keep nagging you to abandon Denzil and switch to at least 
Dylan - it's absolutely trivial to restore the machine configs that used to be 
in Denzil - I already gave you the exact command... :)

file in my meta/recipes-kernel/linux-libc-headers directory.  In my
local.conf I added LINUX_LIBC_HEADERS_VERSION = "2.6.37.2" but when I
bitbake core-image-minimal it doesn't look like it is rebuilding everything
with the headers I specified.  If I look
in build/tmp-eglibc/work/armv7a-vfp-neon-oe-linux-gnueabi/linux-libc-headers
all I see is 3.8-r0 so it doesn't look like it grabbed the 2.6.37 headers.

Did I go about this the wrong way?  I tried a bitbake -c cleanall
core-image-minimal and that didn't appear to kick it in the pants and make
it build everything over again with the new headers.

Ah, thanks for the heads up.  I looked at my arago checkout and my
arago-prefs.inc didn't look like that but I see you just did that a few
days ago so I'll do a git pull and update my tree and study that to figure
out how it works.

So for my particular case, I'm guessing I need to do something similar
in oe-core/meta/conf/distro/include/default-providers.inc
& default-versions.inc?
