I have recently noticed the directory /usr/lib/.build-id in the RPM
packages generated by master of OE-core. It contains hashed links to
the binaries in the package.

What is it used for?
Can it be removed?

I believe it could be due to switching the versions of rpm in OE-Core,
this is a unique build signature, which can be used by various tools
to tie a rpm back into a build. Its handy when you are debugging field
problems.

Yes.
