Hello,

I can't get 4.0/5.1 sound working on my laptop [0] [1] with Fedora 22.
With Linux 4.0 there is no output on jacks but with 4.1-rc6 I'm
getting sound only on one output.
Switching between
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo and
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0
output:analog-surround-40 only boosts the volume on the first output.

Attached is dmesg [2], lsmod [3], result of lspci -vv [4] and pacmd
list-cards and
list-sinks [5] and output of various information from /proc/asound while
runnig 4.1-rc6.

Let me know if you need more information or how I can help.

Best regards,
Nicolae Rosia

Could you give alsa-info.sh output?

The first thing you should check is whether all jacks are properly
recognized as output pins. You can check the jack detection via
hdajackretask or other programs and make 1:1 mapping between pin and
jack. Let us know the result.

According to BIOS setup, the laptop has only one output jack one mic
jack. What do you suppose to make 4.0 or 5.1 outputs working with
them? Or do you mean about the surround outputs over HDMI or SPDIF?

Please clarify what you exactly tested and what didn't work in more
details.

Hi,

The laptop has 3 jacks. 5.1/4.0 works fine in Windows 8.1 and I'm not
talking about HDMI/SPDIF.
If you look at the laptop specification, it says
1 x Microphone-in jack
2 x Headphone-out jack (SPDIF)
But the microphone-in jack can also be an output.
Also, the laptop has two microphones, a pair of speakers and a subwoofer (?)
I can also boot Windows and provide information, please let me know
what you need.

Best regards,
Nicolae Rosia

Then the BIOS on your machine doesn't provide the full pin mapping.
As already mentioned, you have to figure out the pin / jack mapping by
yourself. You can try hdajackretask, for example.

Try hdajacksensetest -a to find out the two headphone jacks and mic jack by
plug and unplug

As not enough volume control for 5.1, internal speaker and subwoofer

Thank you very much!
I have compiled hdajacksensetest from source and found out that one
pin was marked as Not connected even though it was present, and
another one was marked as Microphone.
I have used hdajackretask to force the retask at boot time (it didn't
work at runtime - it always displays tee:
/sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/reconfig: Device or resource busy) and now it
looks like this:
./hdajacksensetest -c 1 -a
Pin 0x12 (Internal Mic): present = No
Pin 0x14 (Internal Speaker): present = No
Pin 0x15 (Green Line Out, Rear side): present = Yes
Pin 0x16 (Green Line Out, Rear side): present = Yes
Pin 0x18 (Green Line Out, Rear side): present = Yes
Pin 0x19 (Not connected): present = No
Pin 0x1a (Internal Speaker): present = No
Pin 0x1b (Not connected): present = No
Pin 0x1d (Not connected): present = No
Pin 0x1e (Internal SPDIF Out): present = No
Pin 0x1f (Not connected): present = No

After this, I have modified the pulseaudio config,
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf, by adding the following:
default-sample-channels = 6
enable-lfe-remixing = yes
and 5.1 works!

How can we fix this for other owners?

Do you mean hdajackretask cannot shutdown pulseaudio or you still have
other applicaion using the sound card which prevent dynamic reconfiguration
of snd-hda-intel ?

Can you post the output of alsa-info.sh after you patched the line out
jacks ?

Which node is the headphone spdif combo jack ?

Do both headphone jacks have headphone , headset or line out icon ?

The normal fix is to add back the missing headphone jacks

Do you mean switch to 5.1 profile in sound preference is not enough ?

It is strange that user guide is different from specification
What are the icons near the jacks ?

Headphone output and S/PDIF output combo jack port This port allows you to
connect your Notebook PC to amplified speakers or headphones. You can also
use this port to connect your Notebook PC to Sony/Philips Digital
Interconnect Format (S/PDIF) compliant devices.

Microphone input jack port The microphone input jack port is used to
connect your Notebook PC to an external microphone.

Audio Input Jack The stereo input jack (1/8 inch) can be used to connect a
stereo audio source to the Notebook PC

I was testing using a browser on a youtube video. When I apply the
changes, I lose the sound (pulseaudio gets killed), that message
appears and I have to refresh the page to get sound again - but
nothing changes.

Using hdajacksensetest I found out the mapping:
SPDIF port (jack 1): Pin 0x16 (Green Line Out, Rear side)
jack 2: Pin 0x18 (Green Line Out, Rear side)
jack 3: Pin 0x15 (Green Line Out, Rear side)

You can see the icons here [0] at page 20

By listening on Youtube I can't hear the center and subwoofer without
modifying the pulseaudio conf

Are you sure that those icons and jacks order matched with your notebook ?

The user guide seem not specific to g751jm

3) the icon is a line out symbol, arrow point out of the circles but the
description is audio input jack (i.e. line in) which does not match with
the specification

Neither specification nor user manual mention the support of surround 5.1

If your specifcaion and user guide does not mention the support of surround
5.1

You need to find out the internal subwoofer use both channel or just left
or right

speaker-test -c4 -t wav -D hw:0,0

If you hear high frequency from subwoofer, this mean you need software low
pass filtter

Two headphone jacks, internal speaker and subwoofer

There are only three playback volume controls

Your case are

The icons match the laptop, I can send you a picture if you wish, but
it looks identical.

It is curious because I have selected Analog Surround 5.1 Output in
Sound Settings (GNOME), and I can test each individual speaker (5.1).
It also works in Windows 8.1

After removing all jacks and testing with speaker-test -c 4 -t wav -D hw:1,0

speaker-test 1.0.29

Playback device is hw:1,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 4 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 32 to 524288
Period size range from 16 to 262144
Using max buffer size 524288
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 131072
was set buffer_size = 524288
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
 3 - Rear Right
 2 - Rear Left
^CTime per period = 9.384977

I can hear high frequency from internal subwoofer while speaker-test
printed 3 and 2.

You can build and run using git but without install pulseaudio to test 2.1
and pulseaudio lfe-filter

do windows 8.1 use mic jack as clfe or surround ?

Since the user manual did not provide the mapping,

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-034198.htm

How do the other user know the mapping even if you implemented 5.1 ?

You have to follow up the above thread about the name of volume control if
you think your case are

D: 3DACs 2 HP 1Mic 2 Speaker

Windows 8.1 uses mic jack for Mic In or Center/Subwoofer Speaker out
and Front Speakers are swapped with Rear Speakers.

Is the support of 5.1 done by realtek hda manager or asus audio wizard ?

I have only used Realtek HDA Manager. There's no "wizard", you just
have to select 5.1 Speaker in Speaker Configuration drop down menu.

Do Realtek HDA Manger regard the other two jacks as

1) headphone in stereo mode ?
2) two line out jacks in 4.0 mode ?

Do your 2.1 work as expected after enable pulseaudio 2.1 lfe filter ?

Do your dual headphone jacks work as expected after you add back the
missing pin?

Do your dual headphone jack coexist with 2.1 speakers since you only have
three volume controls ?

After you change to 5.1 by realtek hda manger , do you need a reboot ?
If yes, Do this mean that you also need another reboot to use back 2.1
intenal speakers ?

Do HDA realtek manager allow you to

a) change mic jack as Line in jack ?
b) disable the subwoofer ?
c) change any jack to line in, line out, headphone or mic ?

Since bios did not setup pin default for some jacks,

Do users expect the jacks are initialised by the driver

1) as the icon near the jack
2) as specified in user manual
3) as notebook specifcation

You need a simplified verion of hdajackretask which allow you to change
from 2.1 to 5.1

Jack functions numbered as seen in Asus PDF, copied from Realtek HDA:
Jack 1:
Headphone
Front Speaker Out

Jack 2:
Mic In
Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out

Jack 3:
Headphone
Rear Speaker Out

On Windows I don't need any reboot. hdajackretask was giving a warning
and it didn't work only after rebooting.

I don't care really. If a user sees that he has a 5.1 profile, he can
use the audio UI to identify each channel.

Have you tested whether your dual headphone jacks work as expected ?

When auto parser find two headphone jacks and no line out jacks, it use
sequence number to check those headphone and dock headphone and put one
headphone jack in spec->line_out_pins

But your dual headphone jacks need sequence number to determine whether it
is use as headphone for front and headphone for surround

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/tree/src/modules/alsa/mixer/paths/analog-output-headphones-2.conf

AFAIK, no alsa driver create Headphone2 playback volume nor Headphone2
playback switch controls

For Toshiba QOSMIO G40, there are also two headphone jacks , mic jack, line
in jacks and one speaker but only alc262 4 channel codecs

Do user prefer to support 4 channel by dual headphone jacks or two
headphone jacks share volume control ?

Do user prefer different name for two headphone jack kctl as playback
switches instead of index=0 and index=1 as pulseaudio seem unable to use
index=1 javk kctl in the pulseaudio verbose log

Hello,

I can't get 4.0/5.1 sound working on my laptop [0] [1] with Fedora 22.
With Linux 4.0 there is no output on jacks but with 4.1-rc6 I'm
getting sound only on one output.
Switching between
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo and
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0
output:analog-surround-40 only boosts the volume on the first output.

Attached is dmesg, lsmod, result of lspci -vv and pacmd list-cards and
list-sinks and output of various information from /proc/asound while
runnig 4.1-rc6.

Let me know if you need more information or how I can help.

Best regards,
Nicolae Rosia
