Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has gotten suspend or hibernate to work on a
Thinkpad x60s? I have googled around for support in the kernel and
haven't been able to find anyone fully successful with it.

Thanks!
George

I have suspend/resume working fine on an X60. Needs some patches to
make it work though. What problems are you seeing?

Could you list which kernel version you are using and the patches applied.

I have a t60p, I am going to guess if it works on an x60 it will work on the
t60 also.

Thanks

I am not seeing any problems at all, though I am not seeing anything
happen :)

If I Fn+suspend... nothing happens ... if i Fn+hibernate ... nothing happens

What patches did you use?

Thanks!
George

Sounds like your first step is to set up acpi. What distro are you
using? What happens if you do "echo -n mem > /sys/power/state"?

The patches you need are to make the ahci disk interface resume
properly. There's a series of 6 patches from Forrest Zhao which he
posted to the linux-ide list, and they apply cleanly to 2.6.18-rc1-mm1.

Hey,

x60s gnychis # echo -n mem > /sys/power/state
bash: echo: write error: Operation not permitted
x60s gnychis # cat /sys/power/state
standby mem

I think I have acpid installed, it is a Gentoo system:
[ebuild R ] sys-power/acpid-1.0.4-r3 USE="-doc -logrotate" 22 kB

I think I've already set up some acpid stuff for my CPU frequency
scaling capabilities, I followed this guide:
ttp://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/power-management-guide.xml

I modified:
/etc/acpi/actions/pmg_switch_runlevel.sh

If i "tail -f /var/log/acpid" and try to suspend the system or shut the
lid, no new messages come up. If i pull my power cable to switch
between AC and battery, messages do come up.

Whats my next step here?

Thanks!
George

Okay I think I am getting closer, after doing some searching it turns
out that Hot pluggable CPU support is needed in the kernel to get
suspend working on a thinkpad x60.

Now, what I thought was fixed from reading threads, may not be

I am running 2.6.18-rc1-git7 and whenever I suspend, and then restore,
my screen remains black and I never get my shell back. The machine
seems to be alive because I can ping it, however I cannot ssh into it.

Any more ideas?

Thanks!
George

I have S3 suspend/resume working here on a TP T60. Many caveats:

* I'm using Ubuntu's 2.6.15-25-386 kernel.
* it's a UP kernel so I'm not using the second core
* I had to tell it to unload and load ipw3945 (or else that module
  became useless).
* I had to tell acpid to trigger /etc/acpi/sleep.sh (it was running
sleepbtn.sh) when fn-F4 was pressed, or just run sleep.sh directly.

Ubuntu's kernel probably has a bunch of patches to make SATA/AHCI work
and who knows what else. But it means that the DSDT etc. are at least
half decent (not always true with my earlier thinkpads).

I'm hoping that some debugging will get SMP suspend/resume working as
well. So far though I've not had any luck getting a 2.6.18-rc1 SMP
kernel to suspend (never mind resume). I did have to enable
hotpluggable CPU's to get past the 'write error' when echoing 'mem' to
/sys/power/state. Then I get lockdep errors and a failure to stop
tasks, which I reported to lkml and linux-acpi a few days ago.

X60s works just fine with stock 2.6.18-rc1. Nothing needs to be patched
for suspend/resume to work. Only suspend-to-disk works though. ipw3945
works... and you need not shut it down prior to suspend. suspend2 doesn't
work.

Here's my .config. It's SMP, and you need to go to BIOS and enable SATA
compatibility mode.

Thanks,
Jeff.

See suspend.sf.net, s2ram will fix the console for you.

Thanks for all the (sleeping) penguins.

I have tried Zhao's patches[1] against 2.6.18-rc1-mm{1,2} and 2.6.18-rc1
and the suspend always stops at:

"Switching to UP mode"

At that point it hangs; giving a Ctrl+Alt+Del reboots the machine
cleanly.

I want to see AHCI suspend working. So, I am happy to try other patches
or debugging steps.

I just tried booting 2.6.18-rc1-mm1 again and got the following
stacktrace which suggests a problem with the ondemand governor.

After switching to the performance govenor I was able to suspend on
2.6.18-rc1 and 2.6.18-rc1-mm1.

Yes, I've found ondemand doesn't like being active over suspend-resume.
There have been some bugs fixed there, but there are apparently still
problems. I switch to powersave over the suspend, and switch back on
resume.

Could you please create a bugzilla entry for the ondemand governor problem
and put this trace in there?

Thanks,
Rafael

Read the docs?

Then you'll need AHCI suspend support, it went on lkml few hours ago.

Wow, you'd think [PATCH 1/6] in the subject would give it away... of
course it does, for everyone but me that is ;)

Thanks guys, that works great.

Is there only 1 patch file? I only see the 1 patch file on the link you
sent me, i applied it cleanly to a 2.6.18-rc1-git7 kernel and i still
have the same problem

Hey George-

As was said earlier Forrest Zhao has created patches against 2.6.18-rc1
and posted[1] them to the linux-ide mailing list. These patches restore
AHCI drives properly after a suspend.

I see, so I guess I still have a disk problem after any type of suspend,
has anyone gotten it to fully work with AHCI? any more suggestions?

I greatly appreciate all the help.

I guess your disk doesn't wake up.

ls can give you some results from the cache.

Thanks Rafael,

it's resuming now after a suspend to disk. However it seems to have the
same problem as my suspend to memory.

No matter which I do, after the computer resumes, it works until a disk
access happens. For instance, if i suspend to disk while in X, then
resume, i get my windows back and everything, however the minute I open
up a console and type "ls", things start to bomb and lock up... i never
get a response from the ls command

The same thing goes for suspending to memory. I have "AHCI" mode set in
the bios, i know someone mentioned switching to compatability mode, but
from what I understand, some have gotten it to work in AHCI mode?

Thanks!
George

No, your swap partition, but you don't need to set it.

It can also be passed to the kernel with the resume= command line argument.

After suspend you have to boot _exactly_ the same kernel the suspend image
has been created for. Otherwise it won't read the image.

Okay, I was missing that, thanks

So, i suspended to disk the first time and it seemed to suspend
properly, then I hit the power button on the thinkpad and it took me to
the thinkpad screen, back to grub, and booted the OS from the beginning.
Did I resume the wrong way?

So, after it rebooted, i tried to suspend it to disk again:
x60s gnychis # echo platform > /sys/power/disk; echo disk > /sys/power/state
bash: echo: write error: No such device

So now it won't even suspend to disk.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
George
