kernel log, dmesg and lspci output

Hi,
using eSATA on Thinkpad W510 does not work for me (tested with kernel 2.6.35
on). At the beginning I've suspected VirtualBox problems (usage of
virtualization features of i7), but today hard reset has occurred even before
Virtualbox has been started.

The reset happens very often ("exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4050000
action 0xe frozen" is caught) - almost for sure in an hour and repeats till
connection drops.
Details from kernel.log are attached (disk has been switched off in this case -
after few resets).

Files system used on all media is XFS.

the easiest to reproduce is by using VirtualBox (haven't managed to try copying
large files - I've planned to do this today, however connection failed before
that).

Your controller's reporting a bunch of link state change events occurring. My
first inclination is to suspect a problem with the eSATA cable or drive
enclosure. A lot of these seem to be rather flaky as far as power and/or the
solidity of the cable connections.

Does it recover if you disconnect/power off and reconnect the drive?

I've checked my answer.
test:
- large files are copied to eSATA connected disk (meanwhile I've checked the
cables - moved a bit while copying was in progress and it had no impact - no
reset during that period)
- after many "hard link resets" the connection finally crashes (lost page)
- disk is switched off & on
- connection seems to be established for few seconds, but then resets (fs
has not been mounted after that - at least, I did not try to) and work with
the disk is impossible after that.

First of all, please don't paste kernel log in-line and don't attach them as
tar.gz either unless the file is really big.  Attach them as separate
text/plain files.

It definitely looks like hardware problem to me.  You're trying to use wd
raptor 15k rpm drive, right?  I don't know your setup but it could be that the
enclosure you're using isn't upto the task power-wise.  The FLUSH_CACHE failure
combined with PHY going down is also indicative of power problems.  Can you
please do the followings?

1. Boot and run "smartctl -a" on the hard drive.
2. Trigger the problem.
3. Reset the computer but don't power cycle the enclosure.
4. Run "smartctl -a" on the drive again.

Post the two outputs from the smartctl.

Hi,
you are right in all points:
- it is that kind of disk
- I was not using original power supply, because I thought the stronger one
with the more convenient switch should work... Maybe switch is broken, but
doesn't matter now.

I've asked the dealer for the original and it works now. I've tested with
more demanding tests and not a single problem reported. Issue can be closed.

professional IT career),

P.S.: I'll obey guidelines about report in case I'll be in the position to
do it again (not likely though). However, I intend to attach logs that way
at the very beginning, but web UI looked for me like there can be only one
file attached. Therefore I've decided for an archive. Sorry.
