i was opening systemsettings, chose workspace design and the default look and
feel screen just stays black when resizing the window or chosing another option
on the left panel, it crashes. could not reproduce the crash, but the black
window thing remains. 

Reproducible: Always 

Steps to Reproduce: 
1. open system settings 
2. chose workspace design 
3. see the problem 

Actual Results: i was opening systemsettings, chose workspace design and the
default look and feel screen just stays black when resizing the window or
chosing another option on the left panel, it crashes. could not reproduce the
crash, but the black window thing remains.

 Expected Results: should not crash and should show the contents.

Does it also happen with

 Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"

in /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If yes, can you try a newer version of Mesa?

my xorg.conf is empty. if i add your lines the complete screen turns black the
next time i login making kubuntu unusable.

not keen to mess arround with mesa drivers, as i have kde plasma next installed
next to kde 4 and need kde4 for work.
or is this update available through the update center?

Sounds like you didn't create a valid xorg.conf. Something like this should
work:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "default"
        Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"
EndSection

the problem remains. in the meantime i have updated my kde plasma next via
kubuntu ppa's like i  am doing everyday, and while the content in the xorg.conf
remains the same, i now have the black screen again :(

next stop mesa drivers?
could you tell me what exactly do i have look for in the ppa's as this seems to
be a custom install and not included in the updates.

i can reproduce the crash now sometimes.
basically i am playing arround with the various items in system settings, open
close them, re open them, open a new one, etc. sometimes after 5, sometimes
after 10 it crashes. and on some i have the infamous black screen.
