I have an old digital camera that stores its pictures on a 340 MB IBM 
microdrive. I am trying to transfer to pictures from the camera to my 
computer but can not find the special non-standard USB cable. The 
camera did come with a CompactFlash to PCMCIA adapter, so tried 
connecting it to my laptop. I was able to install the correct modules 
and mount the drive, but accessing it is very slow (5.0 kBps read / 
3.8 kBps write). Is this expected behavior? Is there any setup I am 
missing that would make this faster?

Kernel version is 2.6.30.3

No, certainly not, I don't remember it to be this slow (it's been a
while since I last tried though, still have hardware here).
Possibly it's a DMA misdetection problem (keeps trying to use DMA
despite it not being possible) which is common with CF type setups.
Try fiddling with hdparm or blktool DMA-related or I/O setup settings.
Other things would include libata.dma=0 (or other values!) for libata
layer or ide-core.nodma= boot parameter (for IDE layer).

And if this indeed is the problem, then it would be very useful to
get automatic handling implemented properly.

Well, it could be that IRQ delivery still isn't working quite properly 
somehow (irqpoll shouldn't really be needed if everything is working 
properly). The adapter only supports PIO0 so you definitely won't get 
more than about 3 MB/sec and probably a fair bit slower than that, but 
20 KB/sec still seems a bit abnormal..

Something is misrouting interrupts on your machine. COuld be an ACPI bug,
could be wrong tables in the BIOS etc.

It will recover from the problem sort of

You should see nearer 200K/sec (PIO 0) but if the device IRQ is being
lost due to misrouting then the device is being polled off the timer tick
and that will drastically reduce performance.

So its a firmware/acpi/irq sort of problem not an IDE one. Try running
with acpi=off and without irqpoll just as a test.

I still get the IRQ error, but reads are 73 kB/s without irqpoll, 580
kB/s with irqpoll.  When I try to use hdparm the mount command hangs
forever.
Is there any harm with using irqpoll all the time?

I'm kind of doubtful it's a misrouting, the driver thinks it should be
on IRQ3 and we end up getting spurious interrupts on IRQ3, so I'm
guessing that somehow that card is producing excess interrupts that
we're not expecting, or something?

Depends on the system and usage, in this particular case it should
probably be fine but it would be better to fix the underlying problem
or apply the workaround automatically..

(hdparm fails since it turns out that 32-bit I/O cannot be used)

There is an unsupported softmodem on the same IRQ that cardbus/pcmcia
controller and it is probably the source of unexpected IRQs..

This was also present in the previous log (before libata's setup) so
there is some more general problem with the sound..

You may try this patch which keeps softmodem device alive instead of
disabling it (since it shares some hardware with the sound codec)..

My bad, jiffies checks need to be reversed now (corrected patch attached)..

Please also post output of dmidecode command -- we may try to workaround
the issue by not using IRQ mode in pata_pcmcia for this particular system
and resorting to libata's polling mode instead..
