I tried pci=noacpi and acpi=off and still have the same problem. I tried
searching for IRQ related information, but I'm not sure what I am looking
for. The Asus motherboard manual is confusing, but lists IRQ for AC'97 as
"shared" under heading "C". I'm not sure what that means. Here is the
full output of "lspci":

Here is also an IRQ related thing I noticed in "dmesg":

Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. This post is also an
inadvertantly duplicated bug post from:

after I posted.

AFter more searching, I found that the onboard sound shares IRQ 22 with the

I went into BIOS and disable USB 2. I rebooted with USB disabled and
"acpi=off". Here is /proc/interrupts:

But I still get the same problem. Sound plays for a second and quits.

Obtained patched ALSA 1.0.9b_26 from Realtek.com.tw.
Won't build on Fedora 2.6.15 kernel (which uses ALSA 1.0.10).
Tried porting ASUS patches to 2.6.15 kernel; no change.
Built a FC4 2.6.11 kernel then tried building stock Realtek
package. Package builds and installs, but problem remains.
Sound files longer than the buffer length (65536) hang.
With some debugging enabled, I see in syslog:
ALSA sound/pci/via82xx.c:794: zero position is read
and
ALSA sound/core/pcm_native.c:1460: playback drain error (DMA or IRQ
trouble?)
When the module is installed, I see
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:11.5[C] -> Link [LNKC] -> GSI 5 (level, low)
-> IRQ5

Just spoke to Kevin at ASUS, who says that the sound chip is actually
Realtek ALC653, and that there's a driver at realtek.com
Seems to be a patched copy of alsa-driver-1.0.9b_26. In fact, ASUS shipped
an earlier version (alsa-driver-1.0.9b_2) on CD with
the motherboard, which as I recall would not compile readily for me. I
will try again ... stock FC4 kernel did not do DMA to IDE drive, so I got
a later kernel with alsa-driver-1.0.11
ac97_codec.c

> //pshou 05/06/05
> { 0x414c4761, 0xfffffff0, "ALC653", patch_alc655, NULL },
So, one question is, why is this patch not propagating back to
alsa-driver-1.0.10 or alsa-driver-1.0.11 ?
(at this point I don't know for sure whether this will fix my problem, but
it's worth a try...)

Me, too. ASUS A8V-MX board, AMD64 CPU, FC3-i386 system
tried FC4 base kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 (hda DMA fails)
FC updated 2.6.15-1.1871_FC5
kernel.org 2.6.16-rc1
lspci shows VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 70)
Class 0401: 1106:3059 (rev 70)
Sound is OK for about a second then stops.
With dxs_support=5 sound is OK for about 4 seconds playing 11025/sec file
Tried pci=noacpi, index=0, id="VIA - no difference
Tried looking for drivers at asus.com and viarena.com. ASUS has
current ALSA driver (lists VT8233 up to rev 60, I have rev 70).
VIA has mostly old stuff (2.4 kernel, RehHat8/9) which I could not build
even though it says "FC4". Hard to find things on their site; their
driver directory is not browsable and some links are broken.
Have submitted this issue to ASUS
http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techmailstatus.aspx?ID=WTM2006012863983987
Looks like a boilerplate reply - talks about Windows though
I checked "Linux".Some suggestions re. rearranging IRQ.
Bootup syslog includes
pcie_portdrv_probe->Dev[287c:1106] has invalid IRQ. Check vendor BIOS
Hmm.. think that may be VT8251 PCI bridge (match with "lspci -n")

Tuba - 02-10-06 14:09
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have attached mplayer8251.strace, which is from a custom 2.6.15 kernel on
Debian. The problem exists on other 2.6.15-kernels tested, as well as on a
box running Mandriva 2006.
Other media players fail in similar ways, either crashing or going into an
endless loop.

Me, too. ASUS A8V-MX board, AMD64 CPU, FC3-i386 system
tried FC4 base kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 (hda DMA fails)
FC updated 2.6.15-1.1871_FC5
kernel.org 2.6.16-rc1
lspci shows VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 70)
Class 0401: 1106:3059 (rev 70)
Sound is OK for about a second then stops.
With dxs_support=5 sound is OK for about 4 seconds playing 11025/sec file
Tried pci=noacpi, index=0, id="VIA - no difference
Tried looking for drivers at asus.com and viarena.com. ASUS has
current ALSA driver (lists VT8233 up to rev 60, I have rev 70).
VIA has mostly old stuff (2.4 kernel, RehHat8/9) which I could not build
even though it says "FC4". Hard to find things on their site; their
driver directory is not browsable and some links are broken.
Have submitted this issue to ASUS
http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techmailstatus.aspx?ID=WTM2006012863983987
Looks like a boilerplate reply - talks about Windows though
I checked "Linux".Some suggestions re. rearranging IRQ.
Bootup syslog includes
pcie_portdrv_probe->Dev[287c:1106] has invalid IRQ. Check vendor BIOS
Hmm.. think that may be VT8251 PCI bridge (match with "lspci -n")

AFter more searching, I found that the onboard sound shares IRQ 22 with the
USB 2 controller. Here is the output of /proc/interupts:

1: 612 IO-APIC-edge i8042
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade

23: 988 IO-APIC-level uhci_hcd:usb4, eth0
NMI: 113

I went into BIOS and disable USB 2. I rebooted with USB disabled and
"acpi=off". Here is /proc/interrupts:
CPU0
0: 19709 IO-APIC-edge timer
1: 38 IO-APIC-edge i8042

23: 243 IO-APIC-level eth0
NMI: 62

But I still get the same problem. Sound plays for a second and quits.

I am also using Ubuntu 5.10 and the Asus A8v-MX, and I get one second of
distorted sound whenever I play a sound, and then it stops. Here's the
output of the debug script:

tiwai - 12-06-05 15:53

It sounds like rather a problem of interrupt routing, most likely related
with ACPI. Try to boot with pci=noacpi or acpi=off boot option.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
m_yates - 12-06-05 18:21
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried pci=noacpi and acpi=off and still have the same problem. I tried
searching for IRQ related information, but I'm not sure what I am looking
for. The Asus motherboard manual is confusing, but lists IRQ for AC'97 as
"shared" under heading "C". I'm not sure what that means. Here is the
full output of "lspci":

inadvertantly duplicated bug post from:

AFter more searching, I found that the onboard sound shares IRQ 22 with the

I went into BIOS and disable USB 2. I rebooted with USB disabled and
"acpi=off". Here is /proc/interrupts:

But I still get the same problem. Sound plays for a second and quits.

It sounds like rather a problem of interrupt routing, most likely related
with ACPI. Try to boot with pci=noacpi or acpi=off boot option.

Here is the
full output of "lspci":

inadvertantly duplicated bug post from:

after I posted.
