hi,

started using Xubuntu (11.10) and cannot get the mount.cifs to the NAS
working.

the following command works from my slackware system:
   mount.cifs //server/share /mnt -o guest

the same command (except added option ro) executed on Xubuntu gives error
CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -13

I can access the NAS via smbclient.

after days of googling, I'm still no wiser. below is a listing of the
dmesg output. help, please.

Would be interesting to compare the tcpdump/wireshark trace
for a successful anonymous login from slackware but failing
anonymous login from a xubuntu box.

Is there something setup in the stanza of this share on the Samba
server that is specific to Xubuntu machine/address?

ok, I've attached file generated on slackware, only difference to the
command above is the mountpoint (/mnt/store).

the xubuntu one, same tcpdump command-line and mount.cifs invokation,
was posted on 2nd Dec.

not to my knowledge, NAS has never been set-up in this sense, all
defaults. on the two respective clients I use exact same smb.conf's
(except hostname) but in any case, mount.cifs ignores smb.conf,
according to its man page.

Looked at the tcpdump.
On the slackware, you are authenticating as user root and not anonymous.

The Samba server on the NAS box, in response to negotiate protocol
request from the cifs client on the xubuntu box, is sending
security mode as 0x3 (user security mode).

The same Samba server on this NAS box, sends security mode bit as
0x2 (share security mode) in a response to a negprot request from
the cifs client on the slackware box..

Not sure why the difference. global section of smb.conf has an
entry of
   security = user.

Shirish

Even, a response to negprot request from smbclient on the xubuntu
box has the Samba server on the NAS box has share level security
as security mode.

So it is only cifs client on the xubuntu that receives a response with
user level security.

For smbclient on xubuntu, dialect chosen by the server is NT Lanman 1.0.
For cifs client on slackware, dialect chosen by the server is NT LM 0.12.
For cifs client on xubuntu, dialect chosen by the server is NT LM 0.12.

Although Flags2 bits are different in smb headers in negprot requests
from all these clients, I do not that pertains to a server
responding with either user level security or share level security
as security mode in the negprot response.
The difference in Flags2 bits have mostly to do with the error code types
(NT type error code vs. DOS type error codes).

( smbclient on xubuntu negprot request smb header flags2 bits: 0xc801
cifs client on slackware negprot request smb header flags2 bits: 0x8001
cifs client on xubuntu negprot request smb header flags2 bit: 0xc001
)

But I really do not know on which basis Samba server makes that
distinction. What is the version of the Samba server on the NAS box?
Something to ask on the Samba mailing list (with the smb.conf file).

Shirish

jr, when can you rebuild your cifs module without selecting
CONFIG_CIFS_WEAK_PW_HASH as one of the config options to build
cifs, load it up and see if that module works?

Ok, I had a look at both captures. The main difference (as Shirish
pointed out earlier) is that the server is requesting share mode
security in some cases and user mode in another.

It does this early on, during the NEGOTIATE PROTOCOL phase, so the user
you're authenticating as and the actual tree you're connecting to
probably don't matter here.

What does matter is the info that the client is sending in the
NEGOTIATE PROTOCOL request. There's some key difference here that's
causing the server to behave differently.

The main differences I can see are:

1/ The older client (slackware) doesn't set the NT error codes bit in
   flags2.

2/ The older client sends a smaller list of dialects than the newer one

...and that's really it as far as I can tell. What might be interesting
is a test patch that makes the negprot request from the newer client
look like the older one.

Either way, this is almost certainly a server bug and it's doubtful we
can reasonably fix this from the client side.

Jeff, Thanks. This is what I had sent to jr earlier...

What is strange is, smbclient on the xubuntu box receiving a negprot response
with share level security but cifs client on the same xubuntu box
receiving a negprot response with user level security.

Not sure whether the Samba server on this NAS box is making that distinction
in the negprot response based on either the list of the dialects received
in negprot request or some entry/entries in /etc/samba/smb.conf or
something else.

So if jr builds and uses the cifs module on xubuntu by removing the
config option CONFIG_CIFS_WEAK_PW_HASH, it will send the
same dialects as the cifs module from slackware is sending in the
negrpot request, and that might affect the negprot response from
the Samba server to the cifs client on xubuntu.

jr is also trying to see if he can mount a share from Windows box
so that will tell whether there is any bug in authentication code
changes between cifs client version on slackware (1.48 or 1.46 I think)
and cifs client version on xubuntu (1.76 I think), if at all.

Regards,

Shirish

unfortunately, mount.cifs //nas/public /mnt -o username=jr does not
work either (same error 13).

also, the anonymous access to the NAS does work fine from a slackware
machine (which uses v 1.48).

do you have any (other) suggestions? again, thanks for your time.

Looked at the wireshark traces.

Jeff is right. Tree connect is denied for anonymous user.
Tree connect to IPC$ share succeeds subsequently.

You are authenticating as user jr when using smbclient but as user
anonymous when using cifs client. I think that makes a difference
during tree connect.

I used the tcpdump command as above, two binary files (total 11k)
attached, the result of running the following commands as a normal user:
smbclient //nas/public
sudo mount.cifs //nas/public /mnt -o guest

smbclient went ok (I did a du and exit), the mount.cifs failed.

thank you.

See the directions here:

http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/LinuxCIFS_troubleshooting#Wire_Captures

Ideally, you'd probably want to open a bug at bugzilla.samba.org so
you don't have to email these files around (they can be rather large).

You can use tcpdump (run that in a separate pty/tty) for each,
smbclient mount and cifs client mount commands.
Something like tcpdump -s 4096 -w /tmp/<filename>.cap
and send those two files with captured packets.

and as well and send that file.

what do I need to do to supply the traffic info?

meanwhile (sorry, not v knowledgable) what can I do by way of using

Ahh yeah, you're correct -- the cause of the failure is here:

[92841.252756] /build/buildd/linux-3.0.0/fs/cifs/cifssmb.c: Send error

and 22 is -EINVAL. This machine is running 3.0? What may be best is to
open a bug at bugzilla.samba.org so we can track this. We may need to
see a capture of the traffic between the client and server.

From the supplied info:

[92841.243787] /build/buildd/linux-3.0.0/fs/cifs/connect.c: Security Mode: 0x3 Capabilities: 0xe3fd TimeAdjust: 0

CAP_DFS does not appear to be set. I also note that we never actually
check for SMBFLG2_DFS in the cifs.ko code.

It seems like if those bits aren't set, we ought not try to chase DFS
referrals at mount time...

looked at logs (via browser) on NetGear NAS, appears not to have been
recorded.

yes, I can mount the share(s) as '-o guest' from a slackware box, and I
can access the NAS from xubuntu using smbclient, but using the
mount.cifs command doesn't work.

Looks like the tree connect is falling down. Does the user you're
connecting as have access to the exported share? You may want to check
the logs on the NAS and see why it's rejecting the tree connect request.

Maybe add the parameter/option ip=....
Some time ago I had a simular error. Adding the ip helped.

Although this is a very, very old version of Samba (3.0) in your NAS box,
I am surprised that it is returning ERROR_STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED
on GetDFSReferral

Anyone know when that was added to Samba (I thought Samba 3.0
supported it all along).

sorry about the double posting, had problem setting up.

having scanned through last few posts, I hope I've subscribed to the
correct list.

additional information about s/ware:

cat /etc/debian_version
wheezy/sid

mount.cifs -V
mount.cifs version: 5.0

dpkg -l | grep util-linux

hi,

started using Xubuntu (11.10) and cannot get the mount.cifs to the NAS
working.

the following command works from my slackware system:
   mount.cifs //nas/public /mnt -o guest

the same command (except added option ro) executed on Xubuntu gives error
CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -13

I can access the NAS via smbclient.

after days of googling I'm still no wiser. below is a listing of the
dmesg output. help, please.
