Hi Anders, Sam,

After your fix "kbuild, modpost: Check the section flags, to catch
missing ax/aw", I get a lot of warnings like the following during
modpost on x86-64:

WARNING: arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.o (.comment.SUSE.OPTs): unexpected non-allocatable section.
Did you forget to use "ax"/"aw" in a .S file?
Note that for example <linux/init.h> contains
section definitions for use in .S files.

Apparently there's one such warning for every module on my system, that
is, 907. That's a lot, and pretty annoying. How do I solve this? I don't
know much about assembly.

Thanks,

Cannot reproduce here..

Can you send me your config so I can try to see if this is toolchain
version related.

Also what version of gcc/binutils are you using?
Is this x86 and 32/64 bit?

We have a similar report on PowerPC

Given the name of the section, I presume it is somewhat SUSE-specific.
I'm running openSUSE 11.1.

Config attached.

> Also what version of gcc/binutils are you using?

$ gcc --version
gcc (SUSE Linux) 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291]

$ ld -v
GNU ld (GNU Binutils; openSUSE 11.1) 2.19

> Is this x86 and 32/64 bit?

x86, 64 bit. If you need anything else, let me know.

Thanks,

Likely - I could not reprodcue with your config.

Can you send me (off-list) the .o + .ko files
for one of the failing modules.
I like to see what the section contains - or at least the flags.
I do not know on top of my head the commands so
with the .o faile available I expect to figure it out.

I obviously hope the fix also apply for powerpc - but we will
see.

Fix endianness of all the fields in the ELF header and section headers,
not just some of them.

The missing TO_NATIVE(sechdrs[i].sh_flags) was causing many “unexpected
non-allocatable section” warnings when cross-compiling for an architecture
with a different endianness.

The section is created by the SUSE compiler and contains a summary of
the options used for compiling the file. It should be treated like a
.comment section.

Thanks Anders.
Makes sense for the powerpc case.
But I cannot see it fixing the warnings Jean sees.

Jean?

Thanks for the .o file!

This is due to the SUSE specific section as you expected.
We ignore sections named ".comment" but not ".comment" sections
with something appended to the name.

Can you please try appended patch and let me know if it fixes it for you.

Thanks,

Subject: [PATCH 2/2] kbuild, modpost: fix "unexpected non-allocatable" warning with SUSE gcc

Jean reported that he saw one warning for each module like the one below:
WARNING: arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.o (.comment.SUSE.OPTs): unexpected non-allocatable section.

The warning appeared with the improved version of the
check of the flags in the sections.

That check already ignored sections named ".comment" - but SUSE store
additional info in the comment section and has named it in a SUSE
specific way. Therefore modpost failed to ignore the section.

The fix is to extend the pattern so we ignore all sections
that start with the name ".comment.".

On a related note, I see tons of the following warnings cross-building for
MIPS:

WARNING: init/mounts.o (.mdebug.abi32): unexpected non-allocatable section.
Did you forget to use "ax"/"aw" in a .S file?
Note that for example <linux/init.h> contains
section definitions for use in .S files.

WARNING: init/mounts.o (.pdr): unexpected non-allocatable section.
Did you forget to use "ax"/"aw" in a .S file?
Note that for example <linux/init.h> contains
section definitions for use in .S files.

I added ".pdr" and ".mdebug*" to the whitelist; the resulting kernels still
work. (gcc-4.3.3, binutils-2.19.1)

Thanks!

The missing TO_NATIVE(sechdrs[i].sh_flags) was causing many
unexpected non-allocatable section warnings when cross-compiling
for an architecture with a different endianness.

Fix endianness of all the fields in the ELF header and
section headers, not just some of them so we are not
hit by this anohter time.

Thanks for testing.

I will give it a day or two in -next before I do so.
There seems to be a mips issue too.

No, it's little-endian. Cross-compiling on x86_64 to mipsel.

no change.

(Did you attach the wrong patch? It does indentation fixes and adds a few
more entries)

Thanks!

This is essentially what I did in my local tree to fix the problems.
