This suite of patches introduce support for the u8500 based
snowball board.

Alessandro Rubini (3):
  smsc911x: use shifted register access
ux500: added snowball-netev with latest fixes
  ux500: added snowball-digio.c

Mathieu J. Poirier (7):
ux500: Introducing foundation for snowball board.
ux500: Adding new board files for snowball.
ux500: Adding custom pin configuration file for snowball. - Adding
dependency in Makefile. - Adding init function call to
    board-snowball.c - New header file.
ux500: Adding sdi support on snowball.
ux500: hooking up netdev and digio to compilation.
ux500: Addressing irq header file dependency for snowball.
ux500: adding config file options for snowball board.

From: Alessandro Rubini <rubini@gnudd.com>

At least one of the boards using this chip needs a shift in
register access. This adds a "shift" field in the platform data
to have the chip working in all cases without special ifdef.
The approach is similaro to the one used in serial_8250 and other
places. Performance-wise no difference is reported.

This file includes definitions for the output led and 5 input buttons,
4 on the strip on the side and one soldered near the mmc slot.

This work is originally by Gregory Hermant, split by me to a
separate file.

I think Russell prefers to update the mach-types file himself
to add all the new types, so while your patch looks totally
fine, it will not go upstream this way.

I'd suggest splitting out the one-line mach-types patch into one
that is only used for review and testing, but leaving the other
changes.

It's also recommended to add the Kconfig change as the final
patch, so that the tree can be compiled at each step of partially
applied patches (if that doesn't already work).

This changelog would be a good place to explain what the board
is and point to http://www.igloocommunity.org/.

The patch looks good. One question though:

You have a lot of #ifdef CONFIG_STE_DMA40. Is that something
that realistically would be disabled for many users?

If not, you could simply "select STE_DMA40" from the board
Kconfig symbol and make all these unconditional.

Is this change intentional? I'd assume you still want both headers
included here.

Or have the PL022 driver treat failure to claim DMA as a soft failure and
fall back to PIO - and get rid of the .enable_dma thing - which is what
other primecell drivers do. That way you can keep the initializers there
and leave it to the driver to sort out whether it wants to use DMA or not
depending on whether all the bits are available.

I suppose you mean "u32 __iomem *" here, not "volatile u32 *ptr".

And pr_debug() instead of printk(), or just remove the
output entirely.

These need to be writel(), but it would really be
better to pass the configuration in the platform data
and let the driver do it, or do it all in the
firmware.

Better use platform_device_register_simple() instead of
the static device.

Whitespace damaged.

Also platform_device_register_data() here.

It's better to patch the Makefile in the same patch that
adds the file, splitting this in the way you do has no
benefit but makes both patches useless by themselves.

Can't you just remove the #ifdef entirely? If you want to
be able to build a common kernel, these build-time conditionals
don't work anyway, so the irqs-* files need to be distinct.

The other option would be to remove the #include and directly
include the board specific irqs header from the board file.

In either case, the change would belong in the same patch as
the code that requires it. Just add a short notice about it
in the changelog.

Not only that I think, but merge the entire mach/irqs.h into
irqs-board-mop500.h and get rid of mach/irqs.h altogether is the
proper thing to do. The mach/irqs.h only consider that board
family anyway.

There is no reason why we should be broadcasting a few
board-specific irq defines to the entire kernel in mach/

(Surely I can also patch that up later if need be, though,
note to self.)

Yes, full ack. And also for the rest (as you note, the comment
says "horribly").

Actually, this patch was a quick fix to make things work and proceed
with the board. While other people were working on other devices, I
preferred to (temporarily) have a self-contained hack.

Then I forgot to make it clear to Mathieu that this was not, in my
opinion, ready to get submitted.  Please wait for us to sort this out;
currently I think the patch set should be parked.

Thanks, I didn't know about this.
