This is a follow-up of the upstream discussion,
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-kernel/20230124182857.1524912-1-amit.pundir@linaro.org/T/#u,
around adding a reserved memory region in sdm845-db845c
for the framebuffer memory (the splash region set up by
the bootloader) but the general opinion was to avoid
adding that reserved memory for the headless DB845c
usecase.

So this patch splits the sdm845-db845c into a common dtsi,
a new sdm845-db845-headless DT, which disables the mdss
display subsystem, and a new sdm845-db845c DT with an
additional reserved-memory region for the framebuffer.

The default sdm845-db845c.dtb remains pretty much the same
(with an exception of additional reserved-memory region),
while others can use sdm845-db845c-headless.dtb for their
headless systems.

Please pick this after the lvs regulator nodes reordering patch
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20230602161246.1855448-1-amit.pundir@linaro.org/T/#u.
I'll rebase and resend this patch otherwise.

AFAIU the DB845c doesn't have a locked ABL. Wouldn't it be cleaner to
add a simple check in the bootloader to see if there is a framebuffer
set up or not and then disable/remove the reserved framebuffer memory
from there? This should be just a couple lines of additional C code in ABL.

It would also prevent that one accidentally uses the headless DTB with
a bootloader splash and gets the UFS crashes you observed.

Out of curiosity, can someone explain what's so special about the
framebuffer memory on newer platforms? Is it protected by the firmware
to disallow other devices like UFS to access it? On older platforms like
MSM8916 the bootloader framebuffer memory isn't really special. Without
reservation there can be temporary garbage displayed on the screen, but
it's gone as soon as the MDP driver is loaded.

Thanks,
Stephan

You should describe the hardware in commit msg. What is "headless"? If
no HDMI plugged in, then it is a NAK because plug or unplugged HDMI
cable is not a property of a DTS.

A lot of duplication. Are you sure you generated the patches with
correct -M/-C/-B arguments to rename or copy?

So it is the same hardware? Why compatible is in common part? I don't
understand this change.

Best regards,
Krzysztof

Hi, my only intended goal [1] is to add a reserved-memory region
(specific to the framebuffer memory reserved by the bootloader for the
boot splash) in sdm45-db845c. But I have been told that reserving
these 30+ MBs for every DB845c is a waste in case we are not using
display at all (a headless system?). So I prepared this patch for RFC.
The definition of headless is ambiguous to me as well. It could be no
HDMI plugged in or no display drivers enabled at all. I believe it all
comes down to specific use cases.

As far as my use-case (vanilla AOSP) is concerned, display is a
critical component and device doesn't boot to completion unless it is
hooked to any kind of display. May I suggest we go back to my original
change [1] of adding a reserved-memory region for now and let the
users of a headless system, define or come up with their respective
use-case?

HDMI is plug-n-play, thus you do not need new DTSI to describe that
something is plugged or not. How would it even work? You plug HDMI, so
you need to boot your system with different DTB!

Whether driver are enabled or not, does not change the hardware and does
not matter. If I disable MMC driver, shall I create a "no-mmc" DTS variant?

That's problem in AOSP to fix, not in DTS. Systems with no display
attached are perfectly normal and valid systems. They do not need any
tweaks, changes, fixes.

The bootloader always sets up this memory region, it's defined in XBL.
If someone is building a product based on db845c SoM they would need to
modify XBL to free up this memory, at that point I think a new DT would
make sense.

Given that we only found that this was missing because the kernel
randomly allocated memory there and it broke things, marking the region
as reserved is a fix, not reserving it is a bug.

The original patch makes sense, imo this region should go in sdm845.dtsi
as almost all devices utilise this.

I have a pair of patches [1][2] to fix this on sdm845 and sdm850, but I
haven't sent them yet as there doesn't seem to be a consensus on this.
Would this be ok with everyone given the above?

Walk me through this one again.

We only need this reserved memory for as long as the splash screen
persists - correct ?

If there is no HDMI or DSI connected then XBL will never allocate this
memory.

If the MDPSS? driver runs, the display hardware gets pointed at
different memory and the splashscreen memory is either marked as
reserved - and never usable again or its not marked as reserved and we
have system race but in the racy case, the memory is usable.

Is the solution then not to make the MDSS driver always liberate this
memory - irrespective of whether or not a display is connected ?

It seems wrong to sacrifice ~ 37 megabytes of memory permanently. If I
were building an embedded system based on db845 I would want to have
that memory available to me either way.
