I am not on the list, so please copy me.

Yesterday there was a double power blink. I rebooted my box and it appeared
normal, but a few hours later the web browser froze, then the panel froze. I
tried to kill the panel, but couldn't, and ended up rebooting. Then I couldn't
log in. I logged in as root on a text console and found out that /home wasn't
mounted. Trying to mount it hung the mount process.

I booted a thumb drive and tried "btrfs check /dev/mapper/puma-cougar" (the
device containing /home). It said it was busy. I ran btrfs-restore and
recovered source code files into /crypt (/mnt/crypt since I had booted the
thumb drive), which I then copied to another computer and pushed to GitHub. I
tried mounting puma-cougar with -o ro,recover, but mount still hung.

The next day (today, this morning) I bought an SSD, which I installed in the
afternoon. I ran btrfs-restore again, copying all files found to the SSD. I
changed /etc/fstab to point to the SSD, rebooted, and am back in business.
Running "btrfs check puma-cougar" now goes through, saying that there are some
errors.

I'd like to send you the filesystem so that you could figure out why mounting
hangs, but it's 138 GiB and I'd have to mail you a drive. Is there a way to
extract a skeleton that would still make mount hang, but that I could attach
to a bug report?

It was originally 128 GiB, but a week or two ago I ran out of space, moved the
point clouds to /crypt, and enlarged the LV. Maybe the combination of resizing
the filesystem and the power blink made it fail. Nothing went wrong with /
crypt/.

What does "looping too much" mean?

That doesn't sound good. But according to your btrfs check result, your
memory doesn't look good.
There seems to be a memory bit flip.

A full memtest is highly recommended.

And since your hardware is not functioning reliable, everything can go
wrong.

Here, the 2097153 is 0x200001, it's an obvious bitflip.

And since it's in extent tree, even write time tree checker can't detect it.

But that problem is not a big thing, btrfs check --repair can fix it.

Still, memtest first, only process to try repair after your memory is fixed.

There was a thunderstorm. The power blinked twice within a few minutes. That
could have easily caused the bit flip.

"btrfs check" gave me a "device busy" error. (When I booted the M.2, this was
caused by the hung mount process, but it happened even when I booted the flash
drive. I don't know why.) I couldn't repair it. I had to get a new drive and
recover the files to the new drive.

Trying to mount the corrupt filesystem consistently hangs. That indicates a bug
in mount. How can I send you the corrupt filesystem so that you can debug
mount?

Considering your btrfs check reports no serious problem, the hang looks
strange.

The remaining possibility is the log tree.

You could try to boot using any liveCD with new enough kernel, then
btrfs ins dump-super <device> | grep log_root

If the result is not 0, then try btrfs rescue zero-log, then try mount
again.

I can do that booted normally from the M.2. The output is
log_root 862339072
log_root_transid 0
log_root_level 0

You seem to be misunderstanding me. I'm not trying to fix the broken filesystem;
I already recovered the files to a new drive. I'm trying to give you enough
information to reproduce the hang in mount, so that you can fix the bug. If I
have to copy the entire filesystem to an external drive and ship it, I'll do
that, but I'm hoping that some smaller amount of data that I can upload in a
few hours would be sufficient.

When I write a function that reads a file of a certain format, unless it's a
static file like a list of all primes less than 65536 with associated data, I
fuzz it so that, if it's given a file that's not exactly in that format, it
won't hang or crash.

So indeed log tree is involved.

For that purpose, we have btrfs-image, which will only dump the
metadata, which is way smaller than the full disk, and can be further
compressed using -c9 option. (And you can compress it furthermore).

That btrfs-image dump even contains log tree, which is exactly what we
need to fix the hang.

I'm sending it. Let me know if you can reproduce the hang.

Didn't get the image.

Maybe it's blocked by the mail list filter?

You (not the list) should have gotten an email from wetransfer.com at 6:43
UTC. The file is 165 megabytes, which is too big to send by email.

I guess the gmx, nor may wqu@suse.com/wqu@suse.cz is able to receive
such large attachment.

Would you mind to submit it locations like google drive with password
protection?

Sorry for the late reply, as it takes me extra time handling the
btrfs-image bug which delayed me quite a lot.

The good news is, the bug of dead looping is already fixed (or at least
can be rejected gracefully) in latest upstream kernel.

>
> What does "looping too much" mean?

This is caused by corrupted extent tree. As I mentioned, there is a bit
flip in extent tree, making reference count of one extent jumped from
0x1 to 0x200001.

And then since your fs has dirty log tree, during log replay btrfs is
trying to locate the non-existing 0x200000 extents refs, leading to the
dead loop.

In v5.4, we introduced new extent item check, f82d1c7ca8ae ("btrfs:
tree-checker: Add EXTENT_ITEM and METADATA_ITEM check"), which will
rejects such obviously bad extent item, and avoid falling into the dead
loop.

So you're just one version short to avoid the bug.
