Can you please run RIP through ./scripts/faddr2line to see where exactly
are we looping? I expect the loop iterating over marks to notify but better
be sure.

How easily can you hit this? Are you able to run debug kernels / inspect
crash dumps when the issue occurs? Also testing with the latest mainline
kernel (4.16) would be welcome whether this isn't just an issue with the
backport of fsnotify fixes from Miklos.

faddr2line gives "fsnotify at fs/notify/fsnotify.c:368" (it's a 4.14.22).  So
it does seem that you were right about the location.

This happens with systemd handling coredumps.  It's using fsnotify to learn
about new dumps.

Note that on this machine, the dumps are on a loop mount:
/dev/loop0 /usr/cores ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 0

It's not easy for us to reproduce the fsnotify() lockup issue, and actually
we still don't have an easy & reliable way to reproduce it.

According to our tests, v4.16 doesn't have the issue.
And v4.15 doesn't have the issue either, if I recall correctly.
I only know the issue happens to v4.14.x and 4.13.x kernels

Any chance to run 'git bisect' between 4.14 and 4.15 to find the fix?

Looking at the changes between 4.14 and 4.15, that are not in 4.14.32,
the only viable suspects are:
9cf90cef362d fsnotify: Protect bail out path of fsnotify_add_mark_locked()
properly
3427ce715541 fsnotify: clean up fsnotify()

Both don't claim to fix a known issue.
Both look like they could be applied cleanly to 4.14.y.

Yeah, and the second one is just a code refactorization and I don't see how
the first fix could lead to anything like what's reported. So I don't think
picking these to 4.14 stable is really the right solution. We first need to
understand what's going wrong.

Sorry, I'm afraid not. 
It was only reproducible in a customer VM with a specific workload and it took
days to hit the issue. The customer VM doesn't exist any more. And we even
can't find a way to reproduce the issue with fio tests + programs that test fsnotify().

Well, I was under the impression I do as I have:

Do you think that my kernel doesn't produce a proper crash dump?
I have a production cluster where I can run any kernel we need, so if I need
to compile again with different settings I can certainly do that.

I can't do that as the server isn't responsive and I can only power cycle it.

I produced an uncompressed image(the error above caused by giving a compressed
image to faddr2line) by compiling 4.14.32 with config which we have in production
and now faddr2line reports:

Apparently the compiler compiled that function slightly differently than
what you have in production. You need to have the original vmlinux file
from the machine which crashed to be able to use faddr2line.

OK, good. So please try running 4.16 as you mention below to verify whether
this is just a -stable regression or also a problem in the current upstream
kernel. Based on your results with 4.16 I'll prepare a debug patch for you to
apply on top of 4.14.32 so that we can debug this further.

Well, kernel crash dumps work in that situation as well - when the kernel
panics, it will kexec into a new kernel and dump memory of the old kernel
to disk. It can then be investigated with the 'crash' utility. But
obviously you don't have this set up and don't have experience with this so
let's go via a standard 'debug patch' route.

I have production server running 4.16.2 and no kernel crash dumps yet.

and will push it to Linus for -rc3 so eventually it should land in

Subject: [PATCH] fsnotify: Fix fsnotify_mark_connector race

fsnotify() acquires a reference to a fsnotify_mark_connector through
the SRCU-protected pointer to_tell->i_fsnotify_marks. However, it
appears that no precautions are taken in fsnotify_put_mark() to
ensure that fsnotify() drops its reference to this
fsnotify_mark_connector before assigning a value to its 'destroy_next'
field. This can result in fsnotify_put_mark() assigning a value
to a connector's 'destroy_next' field right before fsnotify() tries to
traverse the linked list referenced by the connector's 'list' field.
Since these two fields are members of the same union, this behavior
results in a kernel panic.

This issue is resolved by moving the connector's 'destroy_next' field
into the object pointer union. This should work since the object pointer
access is protected by both a spinlock and the value of the 'flags'
field, and the 'flags' field is cleared while holding the spinlock in
fsnotify_put_mark() before 'destroy_next' is updated. It shouldn't be
possible for another thread to accidentally read from the object pointer
after the 'destroy_next' field is updated.

The offending behavior here is extremely unlikely; since
fsnotify_put_mark() removes references to a connector (specifically,
it ensures that the connector is unreachable from the inode it was
formerly attached to) before updating its 'destroy_next' field, a
sizeable chunk of code in fsnotify_put_mark() has to execute in the
short window between when fsnotify() acquires the connector reference
and saves the value of its 'list' field. On the HEAD kernel, I've only
been able to reproduce this by inserting a udelay(1) in fsnotify().
However, I've been able to reproduce this issue without inserting a
udelay(1) anywhere on older unmodified release kernels, so I believe
it's worth fixing at HEAD.

The patch's changelog says "... this behavior results in a kernel panic." 
This sounds like a reference to corrupt memory causes a page fault or
general protection fault.

But what I saw is only a lockup rather than a kernel panic:
watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#10 stuck for 22s! [java:87260]"

So I guess what I saw can be a different unresolved issue?

Actually I don't think so. The list iteration simply went through stray
pointer. That can crash but it can also end in an infinite loop, or it can
just randomly corrupt memory. I've seen all these situations with similar
problems. So the fix is definitely worth trying.

Thanks for the explanation! It sounds promising!

We haven't been able to reproduce the issue by ourselves.
If our customer still keeps the setup to reproduce the issue, we'll try to
test the patch.
