Hi Al and Linus,

as part of removing set_fs entirely (for which I have a working
prototype), we need to stop calling ->read and ->write with kernel
pointers under set_fs.

My previous "clean up kernel_{read,write} & friends v5" series, on which
this one builds, consolidate those calls into the __ḵernel_{read,write}
helpers.  This series goes further and removes the option to call
->read and ->write with kernel pointers entirely.  The replacements are
the existing ->read_iter and ->write_iter methods which cope with kvecs
and kernel pointers just fine and are already used by many instances
including all the "real" file systems.

Pass the read_iter method as a parameter and mark the function
non-static.  This allows reusing it for additional callsites e.g.
in procfs.

Using the read_iter/write_iter interfaces allows for in-kernel users
to set sysctls without using set_fs().  Also, the buffer is a string,
so give it the real type of 'char *', not void *.

Don't allow calling ->read or ->write with set_fs as a preparation for
killing off set_fs.  While I've not triggered any of these cases in my
setups as all the usual suspect (file systems, pipes, sockets, block
devices, system character devices) use the iter ops this is almost
going to be guaranteed to eventuall break something, so print a detailed
error message helping to debug such cases.  The fix will be to switch the
affected driver to use the iter ops.

I don't know why it's bad, it's just different from every other exit
path from this function, and it's user-triggerable, so it just needs to
get fixed.

This is in the read/write path for the case where we did not end up
calling in the driver.  This is far less stack usage than any read/write
method would have used eventually.

Yes, pid matters, especially when there may be many of something running
(e.g. rsync).

Sure, we could use %pD for a few less line of code and a little less
typesafety.  I'm not a huge fan of these custom, unchecked format
specifiers, but given that they exist we might a well use them.

Which either means that it's all good, or that my scanning was too
limited. But this does feel like the right way to go about things.

Thanks.  If we move forward with this I'd like to get it merge soon
so that we get an as long as possible exposure in linux-next to find
the occasional candidate that needs to be converted to the iter ops.
