Hello guys :-)

I write a LVM patch for linuxkernel 2.2.16 ! I send it to Heinz.
It's a agreement with Heinz that we should test it. I tested my patch
with 5 machines with SuSE and Debian. All so i used Reiserfs patch
3.5.22 for kernel 2.2.16. No problems :-))

Attension :
SuSE user must use the SuSE patch !!!!

Heinz looks at saturday into the patch.

Patch is avaible at ftp://ftp.ping-net.de:/pub/linux/lvm

Please send bugs or errors to e-mail: daniel@mehrmann.ping-net.de

PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY E-MAIL TO THIS ADRESS IN THE HEADER OF THIS E-MAIL

greetings

Why don't you simply use andera's code (ftp.*.kernel.org/pub/linux/
kernel/people/andrea/kernels/v2.2/2.2.17pre4aa1/
14_bigmem-rawio-lvm-2.2.15pre13aa1-6.gz) ?

I want made a patch from last stable version by Heinz. The code from andrea
is really unstable and a "pre-release".
If you you are look into tho code (Do you do that ?) you see that's are
snapshots for SuSE (only SuSE) or new code.
I think we should use only stable code for a stable kernel. Yes of course I
can use this code but then I have a new version and not a patch. A patch is
only stable a code who I desgin for the last stable kernel. Heinz ask me if
i want write allso a version with new code from andrea. That's looks
interesting :-) Write patches are my hobby not my work. Well, if i have time
I want to write a new version and then a new patch.

Hello

I have just downgraded from kernel 2.4.0-test1 to 2.2.16.

I installed the lvm patch to 2.2.16 and can load the lvm module just fine.
[root@scooby /root]# lsmod
Module Size Used by
lvm 98216 0 (autoclean)
soundcore 3204 0 (autoclean) (unused)
ide-probe 6512 0
autofs 9504 1 (autoclean)
eepro100 16752 2 (autoclean)
unix 11396 89 (autoclean)
ide-disk 6332 0
ide-mod 41656 0 [ide-probe ide-disk]
ncr53c8xx 52336 6
sd_mod 16328 6
scsi_mod 40716 2 [ncr53c8xx sd_mod]
[root@scooby /root]# cat /proc/lvm
LVM module version 0.8i (02/10/1999)

Total: 0 VGs 0 PVs 0 LVs (0 LVs open)
Global: 140 bytes vmalloced IOP version: 5 0:05:09 active
[root@scooby /root]#

When I try to do any lvm commands I get the following:
[root@scooby /root]# vgscan -d -v
<1> lvm_get_iop_version -- CALLED
<22> lvm_check_special -- CALLED
<22> lvm_check_special -- LEAVING
<1> lvm_get_iop_version -- AFTER ioctl ret: 0
<1> lvm_get_iop_version -- LEAVING with ret: 5
vgscan -- invalid i/o protocol version

[root@scooby /root]#

I have re-compiled the lvm tools against the 2.2.16 src and libs, but I
get the same message.

How can I fix this, or what other info is needed to figure out what is
happening?

I'm betting you didn't install the older versions of the
executables. Look carefully at which version of the LVM you're patching
your kernel to, and make sure that's the version of the utilities you're
using.

The error message you're getting means that the utility versions
don't match up with the kernel module/patch version.

Have fun (if at all possible),

From the FAQ (http://linux.msede.com/lvm/faq.html#q20):

Looks like you just need to upgrade your 0.8i to 0.8final, and you should
be okay. 0.8i appears to have been a pre-release version anyways, so
upgrading to the final, stable version is a good idea in any case.
