v2:
* Allow device open even another device node is active. This means you
could use transmitter device even receiver is active and other way
around, just streaming is blocked to single node.

* Removed V4L2_CID_RF_TUNER_RF_GAIN_AUTO control as it was not used.

* Changed RF gain documentation.

SDR receiver has ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) and SDR transmitter
has DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) . Originally I though it could
be good idea to have own type for receiver and transmitter, but now I
feel one common type for SDR is enough. So lets rename it.

Add new RF tuner gain control named RF Gain. That is aimed for first
amplifier chip right after antenna connector.
There is existing LNA Gain control, which is quite same, but it is
aimed for cases amplifier is integrated to tuner chip. Some designs
have both, as almost all recent tuner silicons has integrated LNA/RF
amplifier in any case.

There is Avago MGA-81563 amplifier just right after antenna connector.
It could be turned on/off and its gain is around 12dB.

Implement single funtion, hackrf_set_params(), which handles all
needed settings. Controls and other IOCTLs are just wrappers to that
function. That way we can get easily better control what we could do
on different device states - sleeping, receiving, transmitting.

HackRF SDR device has both receiver and transmitter. There is limitation
that receiver and transmitter cannot be used at the same time
(half-duplex operation). That patch implements transmitter support to
existing receiver only driver.

Why two v4l2_device structs? It is a single USB device, so there is a single
v4l2_device struct.

It looks like the only reason might be that you want different control handlers
for each radio device. If that's the case, then that can easily be done by
assigning the v4l2_ctrl_handler pointer to the ctrl_handler field of the struct
video_device instead of the struct v4l2_device.

Other than that the code looks good.

I noticed that the new tuner types (SDR/RF) are not documented at all in the
VIDIOC_G_TUNER DocBook spec. Can you document them in vidioc-g-tuner.xml? In
fact, there is currently not even a description for the RADIO and ANALOG_TV
tuner types!

Note that DIGITAL_TV isn't documented either, but that's OK since it shouldn't
be used anymore.

While adding support for SDR output to v4l2-compliance I noticed that struct
v4l2_modulator doesn't have a type field, so there is no way to tell TUNER_SDR
and TUNER_RF apart! (I *knew* the lack of a type field would cause problems at
some point in time...)

I think a type should be added to v4l2_modulator. If it is 0 then it is set
equal to V4L2_TUNER_RADIO for backwards compatibility.

You need to know the type of the modulator because you need that when calling
ENUM_FREQ_BANDS and G/S_FREQUENCY.

Note that vidioc-g-frequency.xml and vidioc-enum-freq-bands.xml need to be
updated since they say that currently only radio modulators (V4L2_TUNER_RADIO)
are supported, which is no longer correct since TUNER_SDR/RF are now also
allowed.

This doesn't work. The bit is only cleared when start_streaming fails or
stop_streaming is called. But the application can also call REQBUFS again
or just close the file handle, and then QUEUE_SETUP should also be cleared.

But why is this here in the first place? It doesn't seem to do anything
useful (except mess up the v4l2-compliance tests).

I've removed it and it now seems to work OK.

cap->device_caps are the caps of the char device node that the filehandle
belongs to.

cap->capabilities is the union of the capabilities of all char device nodes
created by the driver + the V4L2_CAP_DEVICE_CAPS capability.

You mixed up device_caps and capabilities looking at this.

Quick history: device_caps is a relatively new addition. Before that it was never
clearly defined which capabilities the 'capabilities' field actually exposed: that
of the device node, or the capabilities of the device as a whole.

So by adding device_caps you now have both.

Originally when the V4L2 API was designed the intention was that you could use
video ioctls with vbi nodes and vice versa. The video and vbi device nodes were
basically aliases of one another. That also meant that the capabilities exposed by
each were identical since both device nodes could do the same things.

In practice though for most (and eventually all) drivers you could only do video
ioctls with a video node and vbi ioctls with a vbi node and the whole '/dev/vbi is
an alias of /dev/video' idea was just too complex. As a result the meaning of the
capabilities field became ambiguous which was solved by the addition of the
device_caps field.

It is there to block simultaneous use of receiver and transmitter. 
Device could operate only single mode at the time - receiving or 
transmitting. Driver shares streaming buffers.

Any idea how I can easily implement correct blocking?

Since each video_device struct has its own vb2_queue I wouldn't put the check
here. Instead, put the check in the start_streaming callback. And the check
is easy enough: if you want to start capturing, then call
vb2_is_streaming(&tx_vb2_queue). If you want to start output, then call
vb2_is_streaming(&rx_vb2_queue). If the other 'side' is streaming, then
return EBUSY.

It's perfectly valid to allocate the buffers, but actually streaming is an
exclusive operation.

Currently there is two queues, but only single buffer. If I do check on 
start_streaming() it is too late as buffers are queue during buf_queue() 
which is called earlier (and now both sides are added to same 
queued_bufs lists, which messes up).

It's not that you have a single buffer, it is that you have a single buffer list.
I'd say that you should make two buffer lists and use the appropriate one. They
really are independent, it's just that VIDIOC_STREAMON can run only one queue
at a time.

I have done too looong day about that dual buffer list implementation. 
There is some very strange behavior, which makes it almost impossible. 
If I try return receiver buffers with status VB2_BUF_STATE_QUEUED and 
EBUSY from start_streaming() it does not stop, but starts wildly calling 
buf_queue() in a endless loop eating all the CPU and so. For transmitter 
it seems to work as I expected.

You could repeat that same issue using vivid:
# modprobe vivid
# v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 -C inject_vidioc_streamon_error
# cat /dev/video0 > /dev/null

and it does not stop with ctrl-C
