In France, the DVB-T channels are currently moving (because the analog
TV is being removed at the same time)
The frequencies are modified region by region, with a calendar that
started in late 2009, and will end on november 29th 2011 (see
http://www.tousaunumerique.fr/ou-et-quand/ )

All the new channels are listed here :
http://www.tousaunumerique.fr/professionnels/en-savoir-plus/documentation/categorie-doc/plans-de-frequences/
. The PDF files also lists channels that are planned to be used in the
future (but are unused at the moment)

Is there already a plan to update the scan files to reflect these changes?

Feel free to do that.

It looks like there is a limited number of frequencies used over the
country :
http://www.cgvforum.fr/phpBB3/html/faq_tnt.html#recept7

I am lazy so I was wondering why there was one file of frequencies for
each town in /usr/share/dvb/dvb-t/.
Would it be harmful to have only one list with all those frequencies
(there are 57) for all the country?
I suppose the DVB-T softwares will take longer to find the channels in
all these frequencies, instead of scanning only the ~10 relevant ones.
But isn't it what every television does? All the hardware TNT receiver I
know scan all the frequencies without knowing in which town you are.
Plus it would enable future usage of the currently unused frequencies,
without the need to modify the files again

I suppose I missed something because that would be too easy ;-)

Thanks for your answer.

The French frequencies are (almost) all included in the
"auto-With167kHzOffsets" file.
In fact, the offset can officially be -167, 0, +167 (which are included
in this file), but also +333 and +500 (see page 11 of
http://www.csa.fr/upload/publication/CSATNT.pdf )

I checked that all the frequencies currently declared in the 19 fr-*
files (remaining after this cleanup :
http://linuxtv.org/hg/dvb-apps/rev/795f75601b73 ) are included in
"auto-With167kHzOffsets" (except that some use a 166kHz offset instead
of 167kHz : I suppose this difference of 1kHz can be ignored)

I checked each of these 19 existing fr-* files (see
http://linuxtv.org/hg/dvb-apps/file/93a96e9ce765/util/scan/dvb-t ) to
see if the frequencies were outdated (compared to the official
frequencies :
http://www.tousaunumerique.fr/professionnels/en-savoir-plus/documentation/categorie-doc/plans-de-frequences/
)
Most of them ARE outdated, except :
- Brest and Laval (frequencies are correct)
- Toulouse, because the frequencies will only change on November 8th 2011
- I have a doubt for Villebon because I did not find which transponder
it uses

I saw that w-scan uses only the offsets -167, 0, and +167 for country
FR. I suppose they're the most usual ones.

I would suggest to :
- delete the 19 remaining fr-* files
- make the French users use the auto-With167kHzOffsets file (should we
create a fr-All file, that would be a link to auto-With167kHzOffsets ?)
- create a file with a more complete list of frequencies, that would
also include the +333 and +500 offsets, in case they were used. We might
call it auto-WithUnusualOffsets for example
I might provide a patch for that, of course.

I have put in copy of this email the authors of some of the existing
fr-* files (Maybe some of these addresses are now invalid). If you
missed the beginning of the thread :
http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-media@vger.kernel.org/msg33394.html

What's your opinion?

I fully support your suggestion. I think that the
one-scan-file-per-transmitter is a non-sense (unfortunately, I
participated to this non-sense... but I was just doing "as everybody
else"). We should have one freq file per country, even if it takes more
time to scan... but as scanning is done only once, it is not a problem.
I think that we should have switched to the "one-scan-file-per-country"
a long time ago, because it would have simplified the job of Linux users
of lot !

I am aware that, for France :
Freq in Mhz = 306 + (8 x N) + (0,166 x D)

N = UHF channel number, between 21 et 69
D can be -1 , 0 , 1 , 2 or 3 = small freq offset

In order to simplify things, I would propose only ONE scan file with
offset -166, 0, 166, 333 and 500. OK, it will take more time for users
to run a scan (+66 %) compared to having a file with only offsets -166,
0, 166 but at least we are sure to cover all the possible offset that
can be used in France, and we simplify things as much as we can for
users.

Regards,

As a simple user regarding LinuxTV, i had to:
1) Buy a TV card, and plug it
2) Try TV software to "scan", and see this is not working
3) google the issue and found a tuto
4) try the tuto
5) scan
6) scream "this fucking card **** **** * ****" to everyone ( false, i
keep it in my head)

7 to 34) Iterate many many time between 3 and 6

35) At least found the Freq in Mhz = 306 + (8 x N) + (0,166 x D) thing
on an obscure and random forum
36) take an editor, my favorite scripting language, and program
something to get the good file for Brest
37) test a scan
38) See this is not working
39) scream " i don't know the **** others parameter like polarisation"
(yes, still in my head)
...
87) Found how to finally get a working file for brest
88) Send the Brest file to [i don't remember], and Alexis gently said
he commited it.

I think this took me enough lifetime to say that +66% on scan is
really not an issue. +66% is good, even 200% is good!
1) You launch the scan, and see how it's progressing
2) take a coffee and read some news on the net.
3) And finally enjoy the fact the card found all TV channel.
4) At the end, say to the world "the linux/linux-media developers are
fu***** good"

IMHO, this is a much better process ;-)

There are five files,
- auto-Default
- auto-With167kHzOffsets
- auto-Australia
- auto-Italy
- auto-Taiwan

which cover all dvb-t transmitters known to me. If your device can
deal with auto* parameters, they're sufficient. (some / many?) devices
can also deal with the 167kHz offset automatically. It is extremely
unlikely that one of the other offsets will be used in future, so I
wait for evidence before I take any action there.

The following patch deletes the 19 remaining fr-* files, as most of them
are outdated.

I tested auto-Default and it worked for me (I tested on tvheadend. See
https://www.lonelycoder.com/redmine/issues/570 ).
Could the other French users test auto-Default (and
auto-With167kHzOffsets if necessary) to confirm we don't need more
frequencies?
