Hi all,

Changes since next-20080826:

Linus' tree lost its build fix patch.

The arm tree lost its conflict.

The ide tree lost if build fix patch.

The kvm tree lost a conflict.

The rr tree gained a build fix patch.

The block tree gained a conflict against each of the test and ide trees.

The creds tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The sparseirq tree losta its build fix patch.

I have also applied the following patches for known problems:

ftrace: protect the definition of ftrace_release
	revert BUILD_BUG_ON change

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sfr/linux-next.git
(patches at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/sfr/linux-next/). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups, it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig,
44x_defconfig and allyesconfig and i386, sparc and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 113 trees (counting Linus' and 14 trees of patches pending for
Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

which is most likely already fixed in x86 tree by

Confirmed.

However now I'm getting device-mapper errors on 'cryptsetup create':

dmesg:
...
device-mapper: core: bdget failed in dm_suspend
device-mapper: ioctl: device doesn't appear to be in the dev hash table.
...

cryptsetup:
...
Command failed: device-mapper: resume ioctl failed: Invalid argument
...

next-20080826 is fine

BTW it also seems that certain people need some encouragement
to fix the nasty warning first reported by Randy two weeks ago
(http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/8/14/207) and later addressed by
Rusty (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/8/16/40) (the solution is said
to be fragile but there doesn't seem to be any better one on
the horizon so...)

Thanks for finding this, I will apply it to today's linux-next.

ok, i've propagated those commits to auto-x86-next as well, so that
linux-next is fixed too.

next-20080828 still isn't, The Lucky Winner is:

commit 9617fc8f8e599166590fe339de78a50bc5ab5e93
Author: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>
Date: Mon Aug 25 19:56:08 2008 +0900

block: move __dev from disk to part0

Move disk->__dev to part0->__dev. This simplifies bdget_disk() and
lookup_devt() and allows common sysfs attributes to be unified.
part_to_disk() is updated to handle part0 -> disk.

Fix:

From: Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz <bzolnier@gmail.com>
Subject: [PATCH] block: fix part0 handling in bdget_disk() / blk_lookup_devt()

part0 is a "special" partition and doesn't need to have capacity set - this
fixes regression caused by "block: move __dev from disk to part0" commit.

Jens, please integrate it into the original commit if feasible.

On the somehow related topic - CONFIG_DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT which is
introduced by commit 3e5ba59bbab878f60b8b87004ac55a464bddc819 ("block:
implement CONFIG_DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT") is way too intrusive to be
enabled by default if CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL is set as it easily results
in no longer bootable systems (+ help entry for the new option says
"Say N if you are unsure.").

Tejun/Jens: please consider changing this.

Solution is indeed very fragile - it managed to convert mere

And applied to today's linux-next.

bdget_disk() and blk_lookup_devt() never cared whether the specified
partition (or disk) is zero sized or not. I got confused while
converting those not to depend on consecutive minor numbers in commit
5a6411b1178baf534aa9138052864dfa89d3eada and later when dev0 was added
it broke callers which expected to get valid return for zero sized
disk devices.

So, they never needed nr_sects checks in the first place. Kill them.

This problem was spotted and debugged by Bartlmoiej Zolnierkiewicz.

Thanks for the good spotting. I got confused between the meaning of
!part and !part->nr_sects and added the wrong check during conversion.
I audited the rest and it seems those two are the only ones.

Thanks.

Hmmm... it broke booting? Bart, can you please elaborate a bit what got
broken? Did it fail to locate the root partition or were you using
static device nodes?

Thanks.

It fails to locate the root partition if you are using the default root
device on x86 (the one hard-wired into bzImage, it uses hard-coded 8-bit
major/minor numbers).

Now I see that the issue is easily fixed by passing the root device name
with "root=" (since it will figure out the actual major/minor numbers
later) and that the default root device is said to be deprecated according
to Documentation/x86/boot.txt (OTOH there is no warning at all that it is
deprecated and that you should be using "root=" so I'm not convinced that
I'm the only one who would hit the unfortunate combination).

Actually it seems that CONFIG_DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT introduction (which I
think is a nice step forward) is a good oportunity to put the deprecation
of the default root device further, i.e. it may be worth to hook the
default root device check and/or CONFIG_DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT one into
mount_block_root().

Thanks,
Bart

Right. That would break it too.

Yeap, in retrospect, enabling BLOCK_EXT_DEVT by default seems too
disruptive. There also are people running off static /dev. I hope
distros enable it during their alphas and betas tho so that they can
spot problems in configuration utilities and stuff early.

Maybe we can add a warning there if BLOCK_EXT_DEVT is enabled or do
you have something else on mind?

Thanks.

Yes, this is would be nice, having warning on using the default root
device (instead of "root=") would be even nicer.

DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT shuffles SCSI and IDE device numbers and root
device number set using rdev become meaningless. Root devices should
be explicitly specified using textual names. Warn about it if root
can't be found and DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT is enabled.

There are other ways to specify device numbers directly (ie. root=8:0)
and DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT being a debug option I don't think it
warrants a complex logic, so I just added simple warning message.

How about just putting that in the help entry as well? Given that it's
now defaulting to 'n', people that enable it should read the help text
anyway.

I'll add that to help message but I still think it'll be beneficial to
have warning message printed to avoid getting people off guard. e.g.
alpha/beta distro built with the debug option turned on to detect bugs.

Thanks.

Honestly, those distros should not enable that option. But it's not a
big deal, if you send a patch with the Kconfig wording updated as well,
I'll add it.

I think distros should enable it for early alpha/betas to catch odd
problems. Well, anyways, here's the updated version. Thanks.

Thanks Tejun. With this patch I'm also fine with having
DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT enabled by default.

Hi all,

Changes since 20100826:

The ceph tree lost its conflict.

The jdelvare-hwmon tree lost its conflict.

The net tree lost its build failure but gained another so I used the
version from next-20100826 with the 2 commits reverted still.

The drivers-x86 tree lost its conflict.

A added a patch for a boot failure on PowerPC.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the

After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 170 trees (counting Linus' and 22 trees of patches pending
for Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
