Hi all,

News: the build system (see below) has had its toolchains for most
architectures updated to gcc 4.6.3. People might like to check the build
results and consider if this change has caused any problems. There are
also a number of architectures that are building today for the first
time. Thanks to Tony Breeds for his efforts in providing toolchains.

Changes since 20120314:

Undropped tree: uprobes

There are quite a few conflicts caused by the same patches (as opposed to
commits) appearing in more than one tree.

The tile tree lost its conflict.

The pci tree still has its build failure, for which I applied a patch.

The isci tree lost its conflicts.

The sound tree still had its build failure for which I reverted 3 commits.

The cpufreq tree gained a conflict against the cpufreq-current tree.

The battery tree gained a build failure so I used the version from
next-20120314.

The md tree gained a conflict against the device-mapper tree.

The tip tree gained conflicts against the s390 and tile trees.

The uprobes tree lost its conflicts and its build.

The regmap tree lost its conflicts.

The tty tree gained a conflict against the xen-two tree.

The kmap_atomic tree gained a conflict against the md tree.

The arm-soc tree lost a conflict, but gained more against Linus' and the
arm trees. I also reverted a commit that was causing build failures.

I applied a patch to the cpuidle-cons tree to solve a runtime instability.

The akpm tree lost a couple of patches that turned up elsewhere.

I dropped the Sparc build fix patch.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 188 trees (counting Linus' and 26 trees of patches pending
for Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

What does the "see below" (also in yesterday's report) refer to? I don't see any
more toolchain info there.

Gr{oetje,eeting}s,

In personal conversations with technical people, I call myself a hacker. But
when I'm talking to journalists I just say "programmer" or something like that.

It refers to the paragraph:

"Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds."

further down in the email (i.e. "the build system").
