I came across an oops caused by a nullpointer dereference which seems
to happen in the SCSI subsystem.

It is mostly reproducible, meaning that it happens repeatedly and I
have a rough idea of what triggers it, but it does not happen in 100%
of the cases.


I'm ripping optical media with a PLEXTOR W4012A connected via a IDE to
USB adapter, using the software DiscImageCreator (DIC), version
20240401T222316.
When a disc is heavily scratched or otherwise deteriorated, then the
oops can be triggered in about 2/3 of the cases when trying to create
an image of the disc. It seems to trigger easier when using the
software consecutively on discs. (i. e. it rarely happens right after
a fresh system start on the first discs, but almost guaranteed on the
second or third one after the start. The Kernel is not tainted at that
point.)
It did not happen in the past, but I think this is more likely due to
a new SCSI command usage pattern in DIC than due to a Kernel
regression.

It first happened with Kernel version 6.7.12. My Kernel is usually
configured to panic on oops, so I would have noticed if this had
happened earlier.
It still happens with Kernel 6.9.0-rc5.


The dereferenced address is always the same. Across restarts, across
Kernel versions and is not affected by Kernel structure randomization.


While reproducing the oops on 6.9.0-rc5 I came across another oops
which happens when I send a keyboard interrupt to the software while
it is waiting for the disc drive to be ready. This new oops seems
mostly identical to the original one, but the Kernel additionally
signals that a reboot is needed.

Find multiple complete dmesg outputs up to the oopses attached.
Always after a fresh system start and with an untainted Kernel.
I included the original and the version with decoded addresses.

oops-dmesg-keyboard-interrupt-decoded.txt is the newly discovered
case of which I wrote in the first message. Regarding the involved
functions and addresses it seems to be the same, but it happens
when sending an interactive interrupt while the software is waiting
for a device to be ready.

Please excuse that I forgot to disable the colored output of dmesg for
that last log and am already back on my usual Kernel while writing
this. I can switch kernels again and  trigger the oops if you really
require it without the color escapes.

Since there has been no reply to my report yet: Did I correctly
interpret the source of the crash in the stack trace and do you have
all information which you might require?
