The following changes since commit def9d2780727cec3313ed3522d0123158d87224d:

  Linux 5.5-rc7 (2020-01-19 16:02:49 -0800)

  Merge tag 'usb-serial-5.6-rc1' of https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/johan/usb-serial into usb-next (2020-01-27 10:21:22 +0100)

----------------------------------------------------------------
USB/Thunderbolt/PHY driver updates for 5.6-rc1

Here is the big USB and Thunderbolt and PHY driver updates for 5.6-rc1.

With the advent of USB4, "Thunderbolt" has really become USB4, so the
renaming of the Kconfig option and starting to share subsystem code has
begun, hence both subsystems coming in through the same tree here.

PHY driver updates also touched USB drivers, so that is coming in
through here as well.

Major stuff included in here are:
	- USB 4 initial support added (i.e. Thunderbolt)
	- musb driver updates
	- USB gadget driver updates
	- PHY driver updates
	- USB PHY driver updates
	- lots of USB serial stuff fixed up
	- USB typec updates
	- USB-IP fixes
	- lots of other smaller USB driver updates

All of these have been in linux-next for a while now (the usb-serial
tree is already tested in linux-next on its own before merged into
here), with no reported issues.

Hmm. This actually causes a new warning even before I start building it:

  WARNING: unmet direct dependencies detected for I2C_S3C2410
    Depends on [n]: I2C [=y] && HAS_IOMEM [=y] && HAVE_S3C2410_I2C [=n]
    Selected by [m]:
    - PHY_EXYNOS5250_SATA [=m] && (SOC_EXYNOS5250 || COMPILE_TEST
[=y]) && HAS_IOMEM [=y] && OF [=y]

and the cause seems to be

  203b7ee14d3a ("phy: Enable compile testing for some of drivers")

where PHY_EXYNOS5250_SATA now has a

  depends on SOC_EXYNOS5250 || COMPILE_TEST
  depends on HAS_IOMEM
  depends on OF

and then blindly does a

  select I2C_S3C2410

without having the dependencies that I2C_S3C2410 has.

How did this ever pass any testing in linux-next without being
noticed, when I noticed within five seconds of pulling it? It
literally warns immediately on "make allmodconfig".

The warnings happen during the build too, as it does the silentconfig.
So I'm not sure how this was missed.

Stephen, does linux-next perhaps miss these config-time warnings?

I have partially reverted that commit in my merge (removing the "||
COMPILE_TEST" for that PHY_EXYNOS5250_SATA entry) because warnings are
not acceptable.

               Linus

Hi Linus,

The I2C fix for this is in Wolfram's tree already:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/wsa/linux.git/log/?h=i2c/for-next

Best regards,
Krzysztof

It was never an i2c error.

It was an error in that commit that made a change that introduced a new warning.

It is *not* acceptable to break things and say "somebody else will fix
it up later".

If it's broken in the PHY tree, then the PHY tree is broken. It's that simple.

We don't enable compile testing that causes warnings.

I never said it was an I2C error but only that the fix is there already.
The error in first place was mine because I did not spot the
bisectability problem when preparing the entire set of
compile-testing patches.

Best regards,
Krzysztof

linux-next was fine as the fix was in the i2c tree. Sorry for not
realizing it here as well, it didn't show up on my test builds as I
wasn't doing 'allmodconfig' for USB stuff.

If it's any consolation, it was a lot worse, I did take some fixups for
other issues like this that came in through here :)

But I should have caught this as well, sorry, and thanks for merging.

I saw it when it first happened and reported it, but since I merge the
ic2 tree before the usb tree, the warning went away for me after the
fix was added to the i2c tree.

I wonder if we should start shuffling the order of merges in
linux-next in order to have a chance of finding these issues.

cheers
