Hi folks,

I've got an USB3 SD card adapter (device info attached). Problem:
Writing a (rather slow 133x) SD card via an USB3 slot I get I/O errors,
see attached kern.log. If I use an USB2 slot, then there is no problem
(not shown here).

The I/O errors don't come up immediately, but after a few minutes
writing time, so I wonder if this is a heat problem?

Since modern PCs don't have USB2 slots anymore I would be highly
interested in a workaround. Kernel is 5.3.6 built from the git
repository.

Every helpful hint is highly appreciated.
Harri

What happens if you don't use that rather slow 133x SD card? Do other
cards work better?

Another possibility: If you attach the card adapter by a USB-2 cable
then it will run as a USB-2 device (even when plugged into a USB-3
port). That probably would help -- although it would also slow down
the data transfers. Although, come to think of it, slowing down the
transfer rate may be just what this card needs...

No problem with a 32 GByte SDHC card (U1).

The USB2 cable worked, too. Actually I had expected that the speed is
reduced automatically according to the specs of the card. ???

That is doubtful. The speed of the connection is determined when the
connection is first set up. Unless the reader disconnects itself from
the USB bus when a card is removed and reconnects when a card is
inserted, the speed can't change.

You can see what the current connection speed is (in units of millions
of bits per second) by looking in sysfs. For example:

	cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/2-10/speed

(or maybe 2-5 instead of 2-10; both paths appeared in the kernel log
you posted earlier).

At any rate, it sounds like the 133x card is just too slow to keep up.

AFAIU the SD card is accessed similar to other block devices. There shouldn't
be any I/O errors on writing to a slow device, unless hardware or software are
faulty. The data to write is cached.

Anyway, I got a new USB3 card reader today: No problem with it, even though
I wrote to the same slow SD card. Since the old SD card reader works OK using
USB2, I would either assume a bug in the XHCI driver for the old device, or a
hardware failure.

Would you agree to this conclusion?

Yes, except that I would go even farther. Since the same xhci-hcd
driver works okay for your new card reader and the old card, I would
rule out an error in the driver or the card. This means that the
hardware/firmware in the old reader is most likely to be at fault.
