This makes a difference, as you're now writing the register for every
bit. It can have a performance impact (although that should be small,
but still), but also a functional impact. I'd rather keep a single write
for this kind of sequence, especially when no read-modify-write sequence
is needed. If you need read-modify-write for the platform you work on,
switching to such patterns should be done in a patch of its own.
