Sadly now I was booting again that box; this is what the bios test is
saying:

<bios>
Failure Predicted on Primary Master: QUANTUM FIREBALLlct10 15
Immediatly back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive.
A failure may be imminent
</bios>

Ok, my mainboard is an ASUS K7V-RM with the VIA's kx133 chipset (the
first chipset for athlon with agp 4x && 133 pci if it matters).
So:
Bios: Havard Medallion v6.0
chipset:
Via VT 8371 516 BGA north bridge
Via 82C686A south bridge

Integrated in the mainboard there is an yamaha audio chip witch I'm not
using
Other pieces of hardware are a Matrox g400 max video card that works
happily and a cheap eth, pcnet or something
My HD is a quantum fireball lct10 15 (15 Gb capacity)

I will be happy if it was the case, but I think that it is really a
hardware problem :(
However, this box has worked with kernels from 2.0.X till the last
vanilla 2.4.19-pre8 . I've used the box with 2.4.19-pre8 from the day
the prepatch have seen the web till ~4 days ago with the same workload,
so if it was that the kernel is buggy, I will have noticed it from the
first days that I've installed it. And I've used this HD for 2 years to
now. A glorious death :)

However if you need info, tests to do or whatever I'm happy to do it.
Maybe this hd will help for something.

Thank you for your replies, you rock guys :)

Your drive told the BIOS it was about to die (via SMART). Its probably
telling the truth. Alas poor disk

It may be interested to note that the kt266 was unstable with a kernel
as recent as pre8-ac9. It works correctly with pre9-ac3 (I haven't
tested straight pre9, one reiserfsck --rebuild-tree is enough).

I think bang the switch, fsck it and then send a detailed summary
including the disk/controller info to andre@linux-ide.org, and since its
VIA chipset also cc Vojtech (see MAINTAINERS)

Now it happened again:
While I was using the pc with KDE, Evolution, Opera, Quanta+, Apache
(with only 3 processes for serving, limited by me) && MySQL so with a
lot of workload while opera was getting a page (presumably writting to
disk) the pc hangs. I can ping but I'have not any ssh or similar to get
a shell. Obviously I found ports 80, 443 and 3306(mysql) opened. I tryed
to connect with a browser and apache says no authorysation but I have
setted it to accept connections from all (probably apache cant read from
disk), while mysql crashed. I notice it because the mysql tcp port was
closed.

Now if you want me to try something else, I'll wait 2/3 hours for a
mail. After that I'll reboot that pc hopping that my partitions arent
wihpped :)

If you have any suggestion, patch, test, request info I'll be happy to
fullfill it. Expecially sugestions on how make work at last for some
other time my hd if it is doable :)
Now Im really thinking that it is a hardware problem :(

Please CC me

Well, the thing that makes me suspect of an hardware problem is that
with the very same kernel (and with ide0=ata66 option stupidly settet by
me for "using all hardware's power" and witch I have disabled from the
first problems I had) the pc worked happily from the 2.4.19-pre8 release
day till 3 or for days ago. In bios I've set PIO 4 && (U?)DMA 2. My
chipset is kx133 (mainboard: asus k7v-rm), CPU athlon 700 (not
overclocked) and the disk is a quantum 15Gb. I dont know what cabling is
used to connect the hd because I dont know to distinguish 80pin from
40pin. I've been using this hardware from 2 years and this is the first
"strange" problem. I've seen too that this problem happens expecialy in
massively writes to disk (for swapping ecc). Maybe this is useful:

What mode is your hard disk reported to be in. If it is using UDMA then
its very unlikely to be the disk itself. We also should now have all the
needed workarounds for VIA chipset bugs.

Has this box been stable with older kernels ?

Well, from 2 or 3 days after 1/2 hour of usage kernel hangs with this
messages:

May 27 18:28:13 linux kernel: EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,7)):
ext3_free_blocks: Freeing blocks not in datazone - block = 1950949492,
count = 1

[Repeatedly and then:]

May 27 18:28:13 linux kernel: EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,7)):
ext3_free_blocks: bit already cleared for block 215665

I suspect at my hd too but for being sure... Please CC me because I'm
not subscribed to the list and excuse me for my bad english and the long
mail.
