Hi,

2.5.66-mm2-1 freezes solid after initialising PCMCIA yenta. Next written
by hand:

PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:0c.0
yenta 00:0c.0: Preassigned resource 3 busy, reconfiguring...
Yenta IRQ list 08d8, PCI irq10
Socket status: 30000006
PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:0c.1
PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 00:09.0
yenta 00:0c.1: Preassigned resource 2 busy, reconfiguring...
yenta 00:0c.1: Preassigned resource 3 busy, reconfiguring...
Yenta IRQ list 08d8, PCI irq5
Socket status: 30000020

At this point, the machine hangs. This didn't happen with 2.5.66-mm1 or
2.5.66-mm2 (but it happens with 2.5.66-mm2-1). I'm 99% sure this is
caused by Dominik or Russell King PCMCIA patches.

What happens if you boot without the cardbus card inserted? If this
works, please send lspci -vv output. What happens if you insert the
cardbus card? If this works, again, please send the lspci -vv output.

Please send lspci -vv output under a kernel which works with the card
inserted.

(so you should have up to 3 lspci outputs to send me.)

Thanks.

OK, here we go...

1. Booting 2.5.66-mm2-1 at "init 1" with *no* CardBus card inserted
works fine, as expected. The lspci -vvv for this configuration is
attached to this message as "lspci-no-cardbus-inserted".

2. After booting 2.5.66-mm2-1 with *no* CardBus inserted, inserting my
3CCFE575CT CardBus NIC *does* work nicely (i.e. no freezes and network
working OK). The lspci -vvv for this configuration (booting with no
cardbus adapters at "init 1", inserting the card and bringing up the
network) is attached to this message as "lspci-after-inserting-cardbus".

3. Booting 2.5.66-mm1 with CardBus inserted at "init 1". The lspci -vvv
for this scenario is attached to this message as "lspci-2.5.66-mm1".

Hope this helps. Please, don't hesitate to contact with me for further
information, help or patch-testing :-)

Thanks!.

I was thinking that it could be due to the pci changes - that's one of
the areas I've been working in recently which could have caused this.

However, I believe it is to do with the recent PCMCIA changes to use
the device model, and deadlock within the device model itself.

What basically seems to be happening is this:

- the ds module is inserted
- ds registers a driver model interface for pcmcia socket drivers,
  which takes the global devclass_sem.
- ds causes the pcmcia core to evaluate the status of the sockets, and
perform "card insertion" processing if cards are present.
- this processing detects a cardbus card, and calls the cardbus code to
scan pci devices, and add them to the device tree.
- each device gets passed to the device model's class layer, which tries
to take devclass_sem. But wait! We've locked it while initialising
  the ds module -> deadlock.

I'm currently working on the card insertion/removal code which hopefully
should fix this. However, it's not going to be immediately available,
so please be patient.

Ok, Russell, take your time... Meanwhile, I'll stick with 2.5.66-mm1 and
will try all upcoming patches to see if/when the deadlock is fixed.
Thanks :-)
