Hi all,

Here is the proposed patchset for extending the device-driver matching
mechanism. I believe the comments from Jiri and Benjamin have all been
addressed. Auto-loading from boot as well as hotplugging seems to work
well, and the bluetooth stack seems unaffected, at least I can still
run the magic trackpad. I don't have any report-fixup devices to test,
but I believe those should work too. Benjamin?

The early parsing of reports has been moved as close to the actual
device add as possible, leaving all special handling, such as ignored
devices, still in effect. Also, since only devices not listed in the
special drivers array are affected, report fixups should still apply.
The rest of the devices are parsed and placed into a device group, of
which there is currently only one (apart from the default). This
handling is done automatically for all the bus drivers, BT, HID, and
soon I2C.

Based on the extended modalias of the device id, there can now be one
generic hid driver per device group, and udev will load the
appropriate one. Currently we only have usbhid and hid-multitouch, but
more groups could likely be added to good advantage. The group
assignment logic will not take up much space and will allow the
generic event code to be broken down into smaller functional groups.

The patches apply to 3.4-rc3.

HID devices are only partially presented to userland.  Hotplugged
devices emit events containing a modalias based on the basic bus,
vendor and product entities. However, in practise a hid device can
depend on details such as a single usb interface or a particular item
in a report descriptor.

This patch adds a device group to the hid device id, and broadcasts it
using uevent and the device modalias.  The module alias generation is
modified to match. As a consequence, a device with a non-zero group
will be processed by the corresponding group driver instead of by the
generic hid driver.

The hid bus is populated by devices created by the usb and bluetooth
subsystems. The hid device is then broadcast to userland via uevents.
Currently, the parsing of the hid reports is done during probe of
the hid device, after the device has been broadcast. In order to
allow for the report descriptors to influence the device properties,
it is desirable to parse the device _before_ it is broadcast to
userland.

Specific device drivers, in particular those with report fixup
routines, are not affected by this patch.

Switch the driver over to device group handling.  As a consequence,
generic hid will no longer match multitouch devices, and udev will
automatically load hid-multitouch instead.

With device groups in place, the temporary HID_QUIRK_MULTITOUCH quirk
is no longer used and can be removed.

Addition for v2: store_new_id() needs to be modified as well, in order
for the added devices to match the right device group. Something like
the below should suffice.
