Hi, all

Here is the V4 patches to add uncore counting support for Nehalem,
Sandy Bridge and Sandy Bridge-EP, applied on top of current tip.
The code is based on Lin Ming's old patches.

For Nehalem and Sandy Bridge-EP, A few general events are exported
under sysfs directory:
  /sys/bus/event_source/devices/${uncore_dev}/events/

Each file in the events directory defines an event. The content is
a string such as:
  config=1,config1=2

You can use 'perf stat' to access to the uncore pmu. For example:
  perf stat -a -C 0 -e 'Uncore_iMC_0/CAS_COUNT_RD/' sleep 1

perf_event_open requires the cpu on which to install event is online,
but the cpu can go offline after perf_event_open checks that. Add
get_online_cpus()/put_online_cpus() pair to avoid the race.

This patch adds the generic intel uncore pmu support, including helper
functions that add/delete uncore events, a hrtimer that periodically
polls the counters to avoid overflow and code that places all events
for a particular socket onto a single cpu. The code design is based on
the structure of Sandy Bridge-EP's uncore subsystem, which consists of
a variety of components, each component contain one or more boxes.

Add Intel Nehalem and Sandy Bridge uncore pmu support. The uncore
subsystem in Sandy Bridge-EP consists of 8 components (Ubox,
Cacheing Agent, Home Agent, Memory controller, Power Control,
QPI Link Layer, R2PCIe, R3QPI).

The definition of pmu event alias is located at:
  ${sysfs_mount}/bus/event_source/devices/${pmu}/events/

Each file in the 'events' directory defines a event alias. Its contents
is like:
  config=1,config1=2

Using pmu event alias, event could be now specified like:
  uncore/CLOCKTICKS/

hi,
this patchset is based on parsing fixies I just sent out
and CC-ed you.

I found a way to reuse the event parsing grammar for just
term parsing. I had to make some other changes as well:

  - we end up with 2 start symbols for event grammar to differentiate
    between event parsing and terms parsing

  - we have now 2 diferent structures with parser arguments
    for each event parsing and terms parsing

  - I kept the reentrant parser.. it's not needed but I think
    it's better than non reentrant ;)
    I'm passing yyscanner instead of yylval and yytext as you did,
    because you can get yylval and yytext out of yyscanner,
    also I think it's more generic

  - added automated tests for terms parsing, but we need automated
    tests for term aliasing (patch 4/5) .. similar pmu tests as
    for pmu format parsing

Moving all the bison arguments into the structure. In upcomming
patches we are going to
  - add more arguments
  - reuse the grammer for term parsing

so it's more clear to pack/separate related arguments.

Making the event parser reentrantable by creating separate
scanner for each parsing. The scanner is passed to the bison
as and argument to the lexer.

We want to reuse the event grammar for parsing aliased terms.
The obvious reason is we dont need to add new code when there's
already support for this in event grammar.

Doing this by adding terms and event start entries into event
parse grammar. The grammar forks on the begining based on the
starting token, which is supplied via bison interface into the
lexer.  The lexer then returns the starting token as the first
token, thus making the grammar switch accordingly.

Currently 2 starting tokens/grammars are supported:
	PE_START_TERMS, PE_START_EVENTS

The PE_START_TERMS related grammar uses 'event_config' part
of the grammar for term parsing.

Adding support to specify alias term within the event description.

The definition of pmu event alias is located at:
  ${sysfs_mount}/bus/event_source/devices/${pmu}/events/

Each file in the 'events' directory defines a event alias. Its contents
is like:
  config=1,config1=2

Using pmu event alias, event could be now specified like:
  uncore/CLOCKTICKS/

Is there a way with the current parser to have a syntax as follows:

 perf stat -e cpu/event=cycles,edge/ ...

In other words, avoid juggling between -e cycles and the -e
cpu/event=.../ syntax?

I think it's possible.. so far we have the cpu/event=../ term in use for number
assignment. We could do string translation to appropriate values.. I'll check

if 'precise' is one of your pmu format terms you can use it like that

but 'precise' stayed in the event modifier, so:

perf stat -e cpu/event=cycles,edge/pp..

Hello Yan, 

When I boot my Sandy bridge laptop with the patchset applied, I can see the following
directories in my sysfs interface here at /sys/bus/event_source/devices

breakpoint  software    Uncore_C-Box_0  Uncore_C-Box_2
cpu         tracepoint  Uncore_C-Box_1  Uncore_C-Box_3
-------------------------------------------------------

So looks like I have 4 C-Box kind of uncore PMUs present on my system. But it does not
have "events" directory which is suppose to hold the events related to C-box pmu. This
is in line with you what you have mentioned above, generic events are only exported for
Nehalem and Sandy Bridge-EP type processors. I guess there are number of RAW events
associated with C-box type PMU. I am not able to figure out how to use those RAW events
directly in "perf stat". Could you please guide me how to use them in a sandy bridge setup
as I have explained above. Thank you.
