I have come across what might be a problem and what might be completely
harmless. I have noticed that when I configure my kernel in a certain
way (the config file is attached) 'make dep' produces these errors while
it is being run (these are just the errors, normal output is omitted):

This is with 2.4.9.

md5sum: can't open hfc_pci.

This is not a fix at all.

This build error can be solved in a sparc specific way.

In FACT we would even want this code on Sparc32 in certain
configurations.

Actually thats one of my presents. The ports are expected to provide
their definition for struct kbd_repeat and a kbd_rate function. If the
facility is not available then it can be defined as NULL

So the sparc asm/keyboard.h if it supports no keyboard rate stuff would be

/*
 *	Sparc32 lacks the standard keyboard rate ioctls
 */

#define kbd_rate	NULL

and it'll error out with -EINVAL

It was strictly to get it to compile, sir. I guess the real fix is to
implement architecture specific code in the sparc port that vt.c can call
independently of the underlying architecture, yes?

That won't fix the PCI references which seems to get compiled in if
asm/keyboard.h is included. Taking a look at it, hmm. asm-sparc/keyboard.h
seems to be for the Ultra/PCI stuff, oughtn't this be in asm-sparc64, as
sparc32 doesn't use PCI at all, unless there's something I don't know.

Ummm, there are most definitely PCI sparc32 systems.

JavaStation, it was made by Sun.

There are lots of sparc64 _without_ PCI around (I happen to run two)

I got lost in the discussions of Sparc here. Are these messages anything to
worry about for non-sparc users?

Ignore all error and warning messages from make dep. It always
generates spurious messages, because it tries to read all architecture
"independent" source files. The design is broken, make dep will be
removed in kernel 2.5.

We support JavaStaion-NC, JavaStation-E, Serengeti SGSC, and
Sun CP-1200 - basically everything sparc32 with PCI is supported
(except Sun Ray).
