It seems the following compile error when trying to compile sdla,c
statically into the kernel comes from Linus' tree:

<--  snip  -->

...
  CC drivers/net/wan/sdla.o
drivers/net/wan/sdla.c: In function `sdla_cmd':
drivers/net/wan/sdla.c:443: warning: comparison of distinct pointer
types lacks a cast
drivers/net/wan/sdla.c: In function `exit_sdla':
drivers/net/wan/sdla.c:1685: `sdla0' undeclared (first use in this
function)
drivers/net/wan/sdla.c:1685: (Each undeclared identifier is reported
only once
drivers/net/wan/sdla.c:1685: for each function it appears in.)
make[3]: *** [drivers/net/wan/sdla.o] Error 1

<--  snip  -->

I'm not sure whether the following is the best solution but it fixes the
problem:

Argg, #ifdef MODULE considered harmful..

The right fix would be to make exit_sdla and module_exit #ifdef MODULE.
I'll cook up a patch once I have access to a source tree again (=monday)
unless you're faster :)

On booting 2.5.70-mm3, only one of the six logical volumes in my
volume group is activated. 2.5.70 works fine. dmesg and .config
appended below.

You need to recompile libdevmapper against the new kernel headers. The
kdev_t size has changed and unfortunately the old ioctl interface
exposed this limited one to the userspace.

Aha.

The 64-bit device number patch reverses cleanly, so I think I'll just
build without it and try again.

Okay, that did it.

It seems the following compile error comes from Linus' tree:

The following patch fixes it (drivers/usb/Makefile now includes gadget/

Hello,

I have some good new and some bad news about 2.5.70-mm3.

The good news:

The reiserfs changes seem to be stable, I have been running this
kernel on an all reiserfs box since this morning and everything seems
completely fine with it.

The bad news:

Somewhere in the changes brought in from Linus BK (I assume since
there were USB changes there, but none that I noticed in your changes),
all my USB keyboard LEDs stopped working. Numlock and capslock still
seem to function correctly but the LEDs on the keyboard no longer work,
with 2.5.70-mm2 they worked on VTs and in X, with 2.5.70-mm3 they don't
work on either.

No, the better fix is to revert whatever change added
USB_GADGET into drivers/usb/Makefile ... the slave/gadget
side API needs to be independent of the master/host side
code.

Not sure if this is related to the -mm patches or the bk snapshot, but I left
2.5.70-mm3 compiling KDE all last night, and when I got up this morning I
found the machine had oopsed and was in an unusable state. Though I wasn't
able to note down the final oops, I did get two warnings that were dumped to
kern.log moments before the machine died.

Trying to fix it up, but a reboot is needed

As the machine was doing compilation, nothing extraneous was loaded (like X),
but it could easily have been under stress at the time of oops. I guess I'm
just making sure it's got nothing to do with your ext3 changes.

Cheers,
Alistair.

eww, that's a PageDirect page. Never seen that before - it's
bad.

Is the box SMP?

Nope, UP, with a UP kernel. I've attached the config I used to compile it, and
a dump of dmesg. Since I rebooted, the machine doesn't seem to have any
problems, so maybe it was a one-off.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Alistair.

Sick disk, or sick SCSI driver. Please swap some disks out and if it still
happens, send a report to linux-scsi@vger.kernel.org

That's expected - block_prepare_write() marked the page not uptodate when
it saw the I/O error. Although that is a fairly bogus thing to be doing.

The newest ALSA patch touched two ymfpci files, and when I applied them everything
works fine, so I'd expect next -mm work, too.

After you suggestion I tried gcc 3.3 and gcc 2.95.3 but I got the same OOPS
as with the original (gcc 3.2.2) version.

There is a new ALSA patch available, but it didn't apply cleanly to -mm3.
If I have time later today I'll see if I can apply only ymfpci-related changes
and if they help.

So far I've not seen this with mm3, but it looks like Alistair has :-( In my case,
this triggered when doing "apt-get -u upgrade". It was a large upgrade as
kde was updated.

Ed

PS. I have more examples if they will help.

Did you compile the kernel with gcc 3.2 or later?
I had a very, very similar oops on my laptop with the snd-ymfpci driver
if I compiled the kernel with gcc 3.2.3. Reverting back to gcc 2.96
solved the problem.

Debian bug #193077 [1] lists a similar problem with current ALSA and
kernel 2.4 ...

If the driver is build-in I get similar OOPS before init is started.
I also got something similar on some earlier -mm kernels, but 2.5.69-mm7
works fine.
