mysteriously during boot, please try reverting the following patches (from
  the broken-out directory):

	pnp-fix-3.patch
	pnp-fix-2.patch
	pnp-fix-1.patch

  and send a report, thanks.

Regression: test10 (plain) yielded higher performance on HD (26mb/s)
without setting readahead higher then default. Now I must set it to
10096 to get about the same performance (though not quite reaching
it:25mb/sec, with 20mb/sec at defaults). Tested with hdparm.

Prakash

The individual patches in the broken-out/ directory are usually
changelogged. This one says:

It was EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(), however IBM's GPFS is not GPL.

  - the GPFS team contributed to the testing and development of
    invaldiate_mmap_range().

  - GPFS was developed under AIX and was ported to Linux, and hence meets
Linus's "some binary modules are OK" exemption.

  - The export makes sense: clustering filesystems need it for shootdowns to
    ensure cache coherency.

Have you actually looked at the gpfs glue code? something that digs that deep
into the VM and VFS actually _must_ be derived work. Or do wed allow people
now to pay a developer tax to buy themselves free from GPL restrictions.

I as one of the collective copytight holders of the kernel strongly disagree
with that, it can't be true that IBM can just ignore copyright law..

I'm not one to toe the party line, but this really does seem innocuous
and of more general use than GPFS. I'd say walking pagetables directly
in fs and/or device drivers is more invasive wrt. VM internals than
calling a well-established procedure, but that's just me.

GPFS is doing all that, too of course. Take a look at their glue code
at oss.software.ibm.com (and take a barf-bag with you while you're at
it..)

well, GFPS is a derived work with or without it. It's just that I remember
we had that agreement about merging it only with the _GPL export. In fact
I'm pretty sure Paul told something about GPLed distributed filesystems from
IBM in that context..

I've got a relatively concrete notion GPFS is not particularly
meritorious. =( Perhaps invalid_mmap_range() would be better off with
a poster child that's taken a bath sometime in its life...

Nope.

Could be. I'm surprised that they need a glue layer at all actually.

Well I think that restructuring the pagecache invalidaton in such a way
that it is useful for non-derived clustered filesytems does give one some
rights to actually use that code. It seems a bit rude to take the code but
to make it unusable.

Well if people have problems with it then I don't feel strongly enough
about it to dispute that, frankly.

But I do not think that making a single kernel symbol inaccessible is an
appropriate way of resolving a GPFS licensing dispute.

IBM has (at the very least) 2 clustered filesystems that use this. One is
GPL'ed, the other (GPFS) is not.

M.
