Hi Andrew and Andi

I've been trying to track dow an bug that causes my userspace applications to
randomly segfault. I've tracked it down to 2.6.11-mm4 (I'm not sure about mm[1-3]).
The bug does not exist in the 2.6.11 kernel. The 2.6.12-rc1 kernel has the bug. The bug
is easly triggered by compiling KDE or the kernel using make -j4

The following kernels also have the bug: 2.6.12rc1-mm4, 2.6.12rc3-mm2, 2.6.12rc3-mm3
2.6.12rc4-mm2, 2.6.12rc6-mm1 and 2.6.12rc6. I'm busy downloading 2.6.11-mm[1-3] to see
when it was introduced, because it seems to have been merged to mailine from the -mm series.

I have attached my config.

These are from the different kernels:

Can you track it down to an individual patch or a list of patches?

I would stay on mainline if you can reproduce it there
since it has less "noise" than -mm.

I've just tested 2.6.11-mm1 it has that bug as well. So the bug was introduced on that kernel.

Can you please get the individual patches from -mm1 and test them?
I would just unapply the various x86-64 patches and do a binary search.

Thanks,

Bongani,
 can you try to narrow it down even further, since nobody sees what coul
dbe wrong..

The easiest way to narrow it down some more is to get a clean 2.6.11, and
get all the broken-out patches in 2.6.11-mm1, and do a binary search.
Testing just four or five kernels should already have narrowed it down a
lot.

The way to do the binary searach is to get the

	ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.11/2.6.11-mm1/2.6.11-mm1-broken-out.tar.gz

file, and then to apply half of the patches you do basically

	grep -v '^#' broken-out/series | wc

gives you 821, so start with the 410 first patches:

	grep -v '^#' broken-out/series | head -410 > apply
	cat apply | while read i; do ( cd linux-2.6.11 ; patch -p1 ) < broken-out/$i; done

and then you test that. If that doesn't show the problem, try with 615
patches, and so on..

There are smarter ways to do it than just the brute-force approach, but
they're also more likely to break, and doing the brute-force approach for
a small number of kernels should already pinpoint the problem to just a
few patches, and then that is when it is worth starting to think about it.

Or:

- install https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/quilt/

cd /usr/src/linux
wget ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.11/2.6.11-mm1/2.6.11-mm1-broken-out.tar.gz
tar xfz 2.6.11-mm1-broken-out.tar.gz
mv broken-out patches
mv patches/series .

Now you can do `quilt push 100' to apply 100 patches, `quilt pop 50' to
remove half of them, etc.

Open a copy of the series file in an editor and add markers to it as you
proceed through the search so you don't get lost.

Avoid applying obviously-broken patches. For example, we have, in the
series file:

posix-timers-cpu-clock-support-for-posix-timers.patch
posix-timers-cpu-clock-support-for-posix-timers-fix.patch
posix-timers-cpu-clock-support-for-posix-timers-fix3.patch

That's one patch plus two fixes to it. You'd either apply all of these or none.

There's a bit of setup but once quilt is installed it's all pretty easy and
quick.

Hi

I've used quilt to et to the patch that is causing problems (quilt is great thanx Andrew). This is the sequence, which led me to
the possible culprit:
push 410, pop 205, pop 103, push 103, pop 51, pop 26, push 13, pop 6, push 4 and push 1
This points to: randomisation-top-of-stack-randomization.patch

Regards

Goodie.

Can you verify (just to make doubly sure that there are no subtle
interactions anywhere) that the current top-of-tree with that _one_ patch
reverted ends up working for you?

Anyway, thanks a heap for spending the time narrowing this down!

Hi Linus

I just tested, 2.6.12-rc6 minus randomisation-top-of-stack-randomization.patch Works For Me (tm)

Ok, that _should_ mean that plain -rc6 should work fine for you, if you do

	echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space

and it would be good to validate that. But it still leaves the question of
exactly _why_ that stack randomization matters for you.. Very strange.

Arjan, Ingo, any ideas? The code looks "Obviously Correct(tm)", but maybe
there's something missing. Does it get the rlimit case wrong?

Bongani, what does a simple

	cat /proc/self/maps

say for you with randomization enabled? Is there something mapped close to
the stack segment..

(It would be even better to see that for one of the processes that tends
to core-dump, like "cc1", but that would require you to catch it, probably
by doign ^Z at just the right time)

iirc gdb can extract that information from a core dump.
if not readelf -a probably can.

Hi Sven

I haven't tested 2.6.12.2 but the problem was introduced around 2.6.11-mm1 and
found its way to 2.6.12-rcX. First try to run the following command (this works for me)
echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space
I got an email from Juan Gallego (cc'd), he says that command does not work for him though.

Andrew,
Should I log this on the kernel's bugzilla?

Regards
/etc/sysctl.conf

Yes please. This is a tough one, and having one place to go to for the
info would be useful.

key for this one is to make sure we separate the cases carefully, and
not end up with one big bucket of "something broke" that has a gazilion
different and unrelated causes.
For the cases where a vm layout thing is suspected of causing the
breakage we also really need a /proc/<pid>/maps *at the time of the
breakage* realistically for doing any kind of diagnostics.

The problem is, it is hard to get the /proc/<pid>/maps file because the crashes are just random.
If I set /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space back to 1, and do a make -j4 on the kernel source.
gcc will start to segfault or cause protection errors. I added a printk in the randomize_stack_top function
just to print the pid and the random_variable (yes it is silly but...), the problem went away.

I tried to capture the /proc/<pid>/maps for the broken apps using the code below (it captures some, but it is brain dead),
but the problem goes away. I'll try to write a bash script that does the same and test.

#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/wait.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include <cstdio>
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>

using namespace std;

int main(int argc, char** argv) {
        pid_t child;

        child = fork();

        if(child == 0) {
                execvp("/usr/bin/g++", argv);
        }
        else if (child > 0) {
                char* name = new char[256];
                sprintf(name,"/proc/%ld/maps", child);
                ifstream in(name);
                delete[] name;
                ofstream out("/home/bongani/log/procs.txt", ofstream::app);
                name = new char[4096];

                out<<"--------------------------------------------"<<"\n";
                out<<"g++("<<child<<")"<<"\n";

                while(!in.eof()) {
                        in.getline(name, 4096);
                        out<<child<<" "<<name<<"\n";
                }

                out<<"----------------------------------------------"<<endl;
                do {
                }
                while(child != wait(NULL));
                delete[] name;
        }
        else {
                printf("fork failed");
        }
        return 0;

}
